Since we harvested a good bit of cabbage this year, I wanted to come up with a yummy side dish to use it up in. Traditionally, I’ve always prepared my cabbage one of two ways: Seasoned Oven Roasted Cabbage Wedges, or chopped up and thrown into a coleslaw. But the HH didn’t feel like either of those.
He was craving a bit of a salty, savory dish and this cabbage recipe absolutely hit the spot. In fact, he made it. he’s on a roll now, 2 recipes in 8 months. That’s got to be some sort of record for him. 😉
The bacon just takes this dish over the top. It’s a simple and delicious dish that he will for sure make again!

Fried Cabbage with Bacon
Ingredients
3–4 slices bacon, cut into large chunks
1 head cabbage, cored and sliced
1/2 cup yellow onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
Instructions
Slice your cabbage and set aside. In a large pot over medium heat, fry the bacon. Cook until the bacon is crispy, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon and set aside. Place onions in the bacon grease, add salt and pepper and cook until tender. Add garlic, saute another minute and then add the cabbage stirring constantly {about 5-7 minutes} until it cooks down. Sprinkle crispy bacon over cabbage and serve warm.

In my house, we make something similar but add homemade dumplings to it. Also make pizza dough, fry up the sliced cabbage, put on dough then cover with more (like a pierogi), pinch it closed and bake according to pizza baking time. Mmmm, mmmm good!

I make the same thing, but add red wine vinegar and red pepper flakes. Gives it a nice little kick.

Unstuffed cabbage- brown turkey or hamburger with onions in sauce pan. Add 15 oz canned or fresh diced tomatoes. Add one sliced cabbage to cooked meat mix and simmer for 20 minutes. Add salt, pepper, garlic to taste. Freezes well for future servings.

not on topic: have to ask – how did the Snooperoos handle your neighborhood enhancement? I remember once when I did it, I heard from all the neighbors – and I’m not in an HOA!! Enjoy the amusement!

I chop my cabbage and put a layer of cabbage, bacon drippings, salt and pepper and repeat until the bowl is full. Then I Microwave it at 5 minute intervals until as done as I desire. I do toss it between microwaving. My dear mother taught me to do this. She said it tastes just like fried cabbage. I’ve never eaten it fried, but we love it microwaved. In fact, we had it last night with meatloaf and large butter beans. Yum

This a variation of the dish my Grandma used to make when i was a child, it’s called Halushki. It had butter, bacon, cabbage, and homemade pasta. i LOVE it and have made it for my kids many times.

I make it with cabbage, bacon or sausage, cooked noodles or potatoes slice and put in the pot. Onions and caraway seeds are added. Add a tad bit of water and cover the pot and kind of steam everything. Really good. Can add more seasoning or leave out what you do not like. Very forgiving and very good.

I make something similar, leaving out the garlic, but adding chopped granny smith apples. I am not allowed to come to certain family functions without it.

We make something similar, but cook it in the microwave. I love it.

I make fried cabbage frequently in all seasons. We usually use ham instead of bacon, and always add potatoes. You can soften the potatoes in the microwave first so that they fry up faster.
