Once a hooker, always a hooker.
Filled and ready to go.
What do you think? Too early to set out tomato plants?
Hunting for bugs.
Finding caterpillars instead.
5 eggs and 9 days to go.
Getting fresh greens…. via sprouting.
The last of the fall apples.
I think I’ll serve applesauce and waffles for dinner tonight.
How is YOUR day going so far?

There is a cold week coming….wait on the tomatoes!
Mavis says
You’re probably right. I always try to get ahead of myself. Must. Stay. Strong.
Ellen in Clackamas says
Don’t let the 80-90′ weather fool you!!! It really is still April. I would wait till there has been at least a week (or two) of the warmer weather.
Sue R. says
I agree–wait on those tomatoes! I’m convinced that setting them out early doesn’t get ahead at all–or not much (unless you really baby them along!). The cool nights and soil sort of shocks those little plants. You can do it…wait! Our first year in the NW after moving from the Midwest…I got suckered into planting too early. Never again!

Where I live in iowa (zone 5) the old ladies say not to set out tomatoes until after the three cold kings of may, the 14th, 15th and 16th. Most years they’re right.
GAil says
I also live in Gig Harbor and our last frost was May 15th last year. It pays to wait!!!
Cindy says
I’m in northern Utah, zone 5 as well, and the old ladies here say to wait until after Memorial Day. They’re also usually right.
Mavis Butterfield says
The old ladies are always right. 😉

Yes, I agree. I wait until mid May, depending on weather. You are usually safe by then. I have also jumped the gun and planted earlier, but they just seem to stall and then have to reset themselves. That puts them behind others that I didn’t put out earlier! I live in the clackamas area too of Oregon. What weird weather w are having lately!! Hot for a couple days, then cool with rain. I’ve heard there is possible snow showers up at Mt Hood toward the end of next week!! Hard to know what it’s gonna do!!

I see your lemon tree has a lot of fruit on it. I also noticed that a couple of the bottom leaves are turning yellow. Mine did too so I read that may be magnesium deficiency so I dissolved some Epsom salts in water and water the tree with it. I did it only once and immediately stopped getting yellow leaves. I also then gave it some nutrients with Dr. Earth fruit tree fertilizer.
Mavis Butterfield says
Great tip! Thanks PattyB!

So if I ALREADY planted the tomato starts, what should I do? Dig up or try to cover them up at night?
Mavis Butterfield says
I would just keep an eye on them. Wrapping the tomato cage with some landscaping fabric if the temps drop {provided the tomatoes are still small enough they are not sticking out the sides yet} should help tremendously. Back at our old place I would set them out around mid april and baby them/hope for the best.
