If you are looking for Endless Summer Bloomstruck Hydrangeas holy canolies! I found a deal.
Hydrangea borders and the whole coastal/beachy home look kind of go together, don’t you think? Especially when the hydrangeas reach maturity and are waist high. Ohhh how I love the way they look when the hydrangeas blooms are practically spilling over a fence. It’s sort of dreamy if you ask me.
The cost for installing a hydrangea border though…. isn’t exactly dreamy. Or so I thought.
A few weeks ago I began calling around to local nurseries to get pricing on 1 gallon Endless Summer Bloomstruck Hydrangeas {my favorite variety}. After measuring the garden space in both the front and the back of the house, I decided I needed about 30 hydrangea for the mass planting I had in mind. Even though I knew the nurseries wouldn’t have then in stock until mid-April, I wanted to make sure I got my order in early to reserve the plants.
Unfortunately, every single nursey I called said they only had the 1.5 gallon {or larger} sizes on order and the price I was quoted time and time again for the 1.5 gallon size was $36.99 – $39.99 PER PLANT. {Did I mention I needed 30 plants?}. And since the Endless Summer Bloomstruck hydrangeas were an extremely popular variety and would most likely sell out as soon as they set them out, not a single place would offer a bulk discount.
So I did a little checking around online.
- Home Depot had them for $23.98 in the 1 gallon size.
- Walmart had then for $15.62 in the 1 gallon size.
But buying plants unseen online? Would they be any good?
So I took a chance and ordered from Walmart. My expectations weren’t all that high, but I hit the “place order” button. I figured if the plants arrived all beat up or were awful, at least I knew I could return them.
I placed my order on Friday, and they arrived yesterday {Wednesday} via FedEx.
Holy canolies! They not only survived the journey, but EVERY SINGLE hydrangea was a WINNER! No broken limbs, all the plants were still moist and I was amazed at how well they were packed!
Frost was on the forecast for last night {and probably will be for the next few weeks}. And since I won’t be able to plant them for a few more days, last night I unpacked all the plants and gave them a drink. Then I moved them to the sunniest spot alongside the house and used a row cover to help protect the plants.
There was in fact frost last night. But thanks to the row cover, when I went to check on the hydrangeas this morning, they still looked great!
Never in a million years would I have thought buying plants online from Walmart would be a great success. But it was. I not only got the plants I wanted, but was able to buy them in the smaller size {to save money} and soon I’ll have the gorgeous hydrangea border that I’ve always dreamed of.
Wahooo!
Have you found a great garden find lately? If so, please let us know.
Have a great day everyone,
~Mavis

Your borders are going to be beautiful!

There is nothing more beautiful than a hydrangea until the deer get hungry. I’ve endured this unhappy experience more than one time although they’re usually listed in the “deer proof” column.

We purchased 16 berry bushes- 10 from walmart and 6 from tractor supply. All six from tractor supply are on life support or worse. All 10 from walmart are thriving! They were 5 bucks at walmart and 10 at tractor supply. Pretty crazy but we are sold!
Mrs. C says
Tractor Supply is on my BAD list. During a delivery, they caused $1600 damage to our car, and they changed their care protocol for chicks in their stores (google that) and the chicks are dying. It is horrible.
LauraA says
I work at Tractor Supply and we take the upmost care in the way we care for our live chicks. I pick ours up and do all the care and maintenance for them and we have wonderful results. If you contact the store you are having an issue with they will do everything they can to make it right. The company is really top notch.
Shari Harniss says
I just ordered six plus two elderberry bushes. Thanks for the heads up!

Never in one million years would I have guessed one could order plants from Walmart…… much less GOOD plants. Thanks for sharing this fantastic lead on plants.
You rock!
Daria says
Wow! I guess there’s a good reason Wal-Mart’s the biggest retailer on earth!
Brianna says
Good to know as I am doing the front yard and I have a list of certain deer resistant plants. I’ve checked local and online nurseries and the cost is much more for local. I will be buying online, but I was worried about quality. I had not looked at Walmart and had no idea they sold plants. I will have to price it out with them when I have time this weekend. I am Zone 4, so no huge rush to get anything within the next month.

WM gets such a bad rap, but in our town of 3,000, it’s the best option for both selection and price. I walk through the garden center every month or so and their selection rivals Lowe’s and the prices are much better. I love hydrangeas, so I can’t wait to see them do their thing.

Walmart? Who’d have thought?
This year we’re putting in a boxwood hedge with Little Lime Hydrangeas behind it.
We recently found a local supplier for boxwoods on Offer Up…original price was $5/each but we ordered 100 so he dropped the the price to $3/ea!!! (They are only 6”, but they’ll grow. They are SO CUTE!)
He turned us onto a supplier for the hydrangeas-$10 for a 2 gallon pot!!!!! (We were also buying 30!)
Offer Up is my current fav for sharking good deals!

I’ve been pleased with the plants I’ve gotten at Costco. The price for the size of plant is excellent especially blueberries. Of course they don’t have a huge selection, but I always keep an eye out just in case. Over time I’ve gotten blueberries, boxwood shrubs for a border, some good size arborvitae for an almost instant screen and a variety of bulbs and other root stock. In general, the prices are easily less than 50 % and the size and health of plant is great.

Great find Mavis! With the severe drought in Northern California we have drastically reduced our flowers for this year. The only plants I was looking to buy were 2 geraniums for our wine barrels in the front yard. Last night a friend, who is moving to North Carolina in June, asked me if I would like some of the plants she did not want to move and wouldn’t you know, they were 2 geraniums and a hydrangea. Praising the Lord for our sweet friends and their generosity!
Lana says
I am looking forward to seeing pictures of them in years to come! When we moved in our house I planted literally hundreds of azaleas and it has paid off! Our yard is a paradise of color right now and we are cutting armfuls for vases in the house.

What a deal! Thanks for the tip~

Wow, I never would have thought that Walmart would have such good quality.

I’m generally not a Walmart shopper but I’ve been pleasantly surprised with nursery stock purchases from Walmart. Some of our best blueberry bushes came from Walmart.
Your hydrangea border will be gorgeous!
Em says
Great to read they are a winner! I’m curious if they are sold by or by one of the third party sellers that sell through Walmart’s webpage.
Em says
Eh, I lost a word there. Sold by Walmart or one of the third-party sellers.
Mavis Butterfield says
By Walmart.
Em says
Fantastic to know! Thank you!
Theresa Guetlich says
Will the hydrangeas bloom this year?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes.

I never would have thought about ordering from Walmart. We redid the front flower bed border and took out dying azalea bushes. We really need to plant something! I’m going to look into this.
Buying plants AT Walmart is a different story (at least at my local Walmart stores). They do not care for the plants well at all.

Down here in coastal NH/southern ME we have a weather advisory for Friday and Saturday of 2 to 7 inches of SNOW!!! Oh, no!!!Say it isn’t so!!!! Hope it does NOT head up the coast to you.

The ability to access nearly ANYTHING on line is such a blessing! I had a “dish garden” sent to a SIL after her sister passed. Looking at local florists the prices were outrageous plus had extra fees tacked on just before finalizing the transaction. It turns out good old Amazon has live plant deliveries. The plant arrived soon at than promised and in good condition. I’m not surprised your Walmart purchase worker out.
The world is so different from what it was 50, even 30 years ago!

Wish we had Walmart in Ireland

There is an online option with headquarters here in South Carolina called Fast-growing-trees.com. I have heard positive feedback about them, but I’m not sure about their prices. I hear from friends the plants are good and the customer service plant specialist is also good for questions my friends had.
Mavis Butterfield says
I’ve had Meyer lemon trees delivered from them before and they were fantastic.

What a great find!

I have had an endless summer hydrangea for many years. Unfortunately for the last two years a late frost bit the tips which is where the best blooms come from. Even though I covered the beauty the frost still hurt her. I did get blooms but it was late June to early July before the plant healed enough to put out blooms. She stands 5 feet tall and is probably 15 feet around. I also have Annabelle hydrangeas that have blooms that are sometimes 1.5 feet across. You can’t kill an Annabelle. I dig up roots every fall and plant them everywhere as well as give them away to anyone who will take one. I live in North Carolina by the way.

I’ve ordered a few plants by mail since the pandemic started, from Home Depot and Etsy, and I’ve been shocked at how good they looked when they arrived.
Kim says
I have been thinking about this post since it was posted and wondered if WalMart had the same plant guarantee like Lowes, Home Depot or other garden stores and they do! I wanted to share and placing my order now!
Plants (includes shrubs, bulbs, annuals, perennials, foliage and trees) – 1 year satisfaction guarantee on all live goods purchased on Walmart.com sold by Walmart.com for full refund.

Let us know how you like your plants.

Your hydrangea border is going to be spectacular! I cannot wait to see pictures as they grow.
We planted 3 gallon Limelight hydrangeas 2 year’s ago, and they are now 6 feet tall and look amazing when they are blooming.
Thanks for the tip about Walmart!
