My plan for the rest of the month… No more grocery shopping! {Let’s hope there aren’t any crazy good deals!}.
The HH was down south last week so I had him stop into Market Basket for a few things. {Oat milk was cheaper than almond milk so he bought that for himself instead}. Blech.
- Eggs were 2/$300
- Brussels Sprouts $1.99 lb
- Broccoli $0.99
- Green Beans $0.99
- Bananas $0.49 {why are bananas always so cheap?}
Cabbage was on sale for $0.39 a pound and the whipity do dah is a must for my evening hot cocoa and the milk, well I like to add a little splash to my tea.
Hannaford $1.67
More cabbage.
Walmart $53.01 {Yikes!}
I blew my March grocery budget stocking up on canning supplies. 🙁 I guess I should have been more mindful of my list when I was making it but the powdered pectin was $11.97 for 6 boxes and that seemed like a stock up price to me, especailly since it doesn’t expire until August of 2024.
Canning salt, I’ll need that for pickels and who knows what else, and the liquid pectin is great for things like jalapeno pepper jelly and red onion marmalde so I wanted to be sure and have plenty of that on hand too. I actually still have a few boxs of the liquid and powdered pectin from my last stock up trip {a year or two ago?} but in my book, when it comes to canning supplies, you can never have enough.
Here are some of the meals we enjoyed last week:
On Monday the HH made toasted bacon avocado tomato sandwiches for linner.
Served on thick slices of homemade Dutch oven bread of course.
It makes the toast and it seems like I have at least a slice a day in some way or another these days.
We also had 8 Can Taco Soup and a bacon jalapeno cheddar biscuit from the freezer section.
And on St. Patrick’s Day the HH made fried cabbage with bacon, mashed potatoes and ham.
He made so much cabbage, that we had it the next night {and the next} alongside some of Mrs. C’s slow cooker pot roast.
And after having fried cabbage three nights in a row, and pot roast twice, I decided to toss the leftovers {cabbage, pot roast and pot roast juices} in the crock pot with a pound of beans, a can of Rotel and 2 cups of water for a hearty bean dinner.
I served the beans over rice {or course}. Beans and rice, rice and beans…it provides plenty of protein and fills you up. What more could you ask for?
And usually, when I cook a pound of beans in the crock pot {with other stuff thrown in} there are plenty of leftovers to pop in the freezer for a night I don’t feel like cooking. 🙂
But the highlight of the week was the chocolate chess pie from Southern Baked Pie Company. Yes, Mrs. HB sent me ANOTHER pie for my birthday {and there is one more coming this week!}.
Apparently she signed me up for a pie a week during my birthday month. Talk about a tasty and hilarious gift. And a fitting one at that! 😉
I’m down to 3 slices… and the next pie is scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday. 🙂 I guess that means I’ll have to double up on one of the days and have pie for breakfast AND with my afternoon tea. 🙂
So how did YOU do with your grocery shopping this past week? Did you find any good deals? Eat anything good for breakfast… like pie?
Here’s to a happy and productive week,
~Mavis

The deals are few and far between in the Midwest and groceries are quite slimly stocked or quite expensive. I did come across a huge deal in corned beef on St. Patrick’s day. Massively marked down because the meat man said no one was buying them. I bought three for the freezer, Haven’t been able to find chicken breasts at Costco but they did have thighs. Fruit and veg seems like it is up in cost. I was going to buy some very nice grapes but weighed them and they would have been $9.80 which seemed ridiculous for grapes that the hubs and I could eat in one sitting.
Hopefully they drop in price a little.

I found some good deals at Costco:
1) Kraft Mac & Cheese – case of 18 boxes was on sale for 8.39 (.47 cents per box) (Walmart has it for 1.00 per box)
2) Pure vanilla extract – 16oz – only 13.99 (Walmart sells 4oz for 11.82!)
3) Coffee pods – Box of 120 pods for 29.99 (.25 cents per cup of coffee).
4) Pork Loin – 9.09 (I forget how many lbs.) – I cut it up into 2 roasts and a bunch of pork chops – should make about 6 dinners for the 3 of us.
Mary G says
That’s a very good price on vanilla extract!
Susan says
I bought cabbage for .39 lb. , too. Got 38 pounds.
Corned beef was $3.99 lb for the best cut- bought 2
Made corned beef and cabbage. Ate it for 2 days
Wet to Costco and bought a ready made chicken.
!st night- chicken, baked beans and coleslaw
2nd night- chicken, mashed potatoes, peas
3rd night-chicken and leftover potatoes, cabbage, carrot mixture from corned beef
Put all the bones and a few scrap veggies in the crockpot. Let sit there on low for 24 hours. Strain- Add last of chicken, onion, carrots, celery for a simple chicken soup
Makes a gallon
Chopped a bunch of the cabbage to make sauerkraut. It is fermenting in my pantry. I find 6 weeks to be the best for us.
Still have 4 large heads of cabbage. I will give 1 to my youngest daughter and maybe dehydrate some . I really love dehydrated cabbage.
So we had a pretty low spend week. I did have to run to the store for celery. I hate running to the store for anything!!!
Ramona says
I would have never thought of dehydrating cabbage. Do you just add it into soups or how do you use your dehydrated cabbage? What size do you cut the cabbage into? Just curious.
Susan says
I chop it up into larger size soup pieces (because that’s how I like it in my soups)
It is so convenient! You don’t blanche it- just cut and dry.
I store it in large pickle jars. Cheaper than storage containers and …pickles, too! 🙂
Plus if you buy it (or grow it) on sale you have it when you need it for a good price.
One of my favorite things to dehydrate

Dried cabbage. What a great idea!

I have also been trying to stock up on canning supplies. This morning my store was completely out of sure jell. I bought the store brand pectin and am going to try it with some store bought grape juice. If it works I may buy more as it is one dollar per box cheaper.
Melonie says
I think it was a good call to stock up on the canning supplies – and can’t you take that amount off a future month’s groceries somehow? 😉
That pie looks SCRUMPTIOUS. A pie a week during a birthday month is a genius idea. My spouse and I have the same birth month so maybe I can bump mine to the month after. Then my son’s would be the following month – so we’d have a pie a week for three months.
I think this is the new plan. heh heh

Our produce seems to definitely be up in Washington State. Banannas are at least double that. Broccoli hasn’t been under $1.89 for a while, even when its on sale. I think just about everything seems to have doubled (or pretty close) in the last year.
I bought lettuce and tomatoes for burgers last week and it cost about the same or more than a pound of hamburger.
CB says
Yep. I’m in Washington DC and it feels like everything is almost double.

Went to business Costco on Saturday and they had the LITER sized vanilla for $19.99!!!! It was $60 a few years ago.
Jennifer says
I don’t think the canning supplies should be included in your grocery total. Nor the seeds. Both would be a separate line item in my budget. Especially with a budget of $100 a month. Just doesn’t seem realistic.
Catherine says
I agree. Canning supplies are a “home supplies” line item in my budget. Same for paper towels, toilet paper, etc. Groceries is just food.
Mavis Butterfield says
Since we eat pectin and salt, those go into the grocery total. Canning jars don’t as those are more of a household thing and used over and over again, much like a canner. As far as seeds go, those go in my gardening budget. We give away a lot of stuff but I still like to keep track of them too.

Love all those beautiful pies you are receiving. Wish I had a Mrs. HB – this is my birthday month, too. Enjoy!
J in OH-IO says
Vicky,
Happy Birthday month to you! Rejoice and celebrate!

Happy Birthday! A pie a week is a wonderful gift! What is the adorable mug next to the blue plate in the picture? It almost looks like Polish pottery, which I collect. It is too cute!
Mavis Butterfield says
The mug is by Sue Tirrell.

I stopped at the store for a half gallon of milk the other night after a meeting. I called my husband to ask if there was anything else we needed (I am not eating carbs, so I don’t keep track of the quantity of bread etc.) Nothing needed, he replied. I checked my wallet for coupons and found a few that could be used for veggies and meat. Half an hour later I walked out with my groceries and a bill of $101.87! Oops! Hubs went back the next day for his bread, LOL!

Hi Mavis:
I wanted to let you know that I am always trying to think of something to send our friends when there is a death and I saw your southern baked pie – I ended up sending my friend in a different state….who lost her 18 year old daughter, a quiche breakfast, turtle pie and chicken pot pie. She has thanked me each time she eats any of the pies and loved it. I have already referred others – what a great thing to be able to send our friends and family!! Thank you,
Diane Oconnell says
Who did you order your pies from? My friends so. Just passed away and that would be a wonderful thing to send her!
Carolina says
The company is Southern Baked Pies.
Colleen says
2/$300 for eggs seems a might steep.
*chuckle*
A pie a week! Hot Damn! What a great gift!
CB says
I always have leftover pot roast and never thought to mix it with beans and rotel…not to mention it looks delicious as you prepared it. And something different than serving it with the same usual side. I am going to try this next time. Family will probably not even realize I’m using leftovers.
