Well, I made it through the entire week without going to the grocery store, but we went to the Rockland Farmer’s Market for our date day last week and well, it wouldn’t be a proper trip to the farmer’s market without coming home with something, right?
The week started off kind of boring with leftovers of beef brisket and peanut butter sandwiches.
There was also tuna on Ritz, chicken salad and some chicken soup I pulled from the freezer.
Farmer’s Market $17 {Sourdough bread $6, focaccia $5, salad mix $6}
And then we went to the farmer’s market and loaded up on bread and salad greens. 🙂 There’s just something about real bread that makes me happy. We’ve tried a lot of bread here in Maine, but I think my favorite is still the loaves of French batard from Tinder Hearth in Brooksville.
Note to self: We need to go there again soon!
Big salad.
Big chicken salad.
Sourdough toast for days.
Panera copy cat tomato soup and tomato onion focaccia. The PERFECT combination.
Rustic split pea soup and sourdough, another winning combination.
It was another good week in the food department, but I sure do miss being able to use an oven. 🙁 The weather is starting to heat up around here, and I sure don’t want to be eating soup all summer.
Maybe I need to break out some of my old pasta salad recipes and start making those. Or buy a bunch of weenies. Those would make a quick meal on the grill.
What’s cooking at YOUR place these days? Do you have any warm weather recipes you want to share? I’d love some ideas.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Our warm weather go-to meals are pasta salads. I usually pick versions that have enough protein and veggies added that they can be one-dish meals, and there are so many variations that it’s not boring. We do a pizza pasta salad, veggie lovers pasta salad, antipasto pasta salad, sesame noodle salad, etc. I really like that I can make them at any point in the day when I have time, and then dinner is just ready to go whenever. They also make great leftovers for easy lunches.
We also do a lot of BLTs and bruschetta once our tomatoes come in. Also sheet pan shrimp boil once we start getting CSA corn on the cob.

Thanks for the wonderful jam surprise! I never win contests so this was a treat to enjoy both now and later.

One summer long ago, we literally had salad bar. I would spend 1 afternoon filling containers with all our preferred fixins. Maybe this is the year for that?

In order to not heat up our kitchen a lot, I have been making “baked” potatoes in the crockpot – which I learned from you and “baked” sweet potatoes in the crockpot. One thing I have changed from the way you taught is that I just wash them really good, do not dry, and put them in the crockpot on high for a few hours. I only make 1 or two at a time and generally 3 hours is plenty of time. I only poke holes in the regular potatoes. I seriously have a hard time making them any other way, now!
Jenny says
Curious- why not microwave the “baked” potatoes? It only takes a few minutes.
Monica says
Taste and texture. I don’t like the way a potato taste when microwaved.

Can you take a day or so and make a few loaves of bread and freeze them?

CA has had a rough week-I was in Laguna Beach visiting family the day the fire broke out. My 94 yr old Aunt was less than a 1/2 mile from the fire-but the wind was blowing off shore-thank goodness this time. I had left her house just 30 minutes before the fire started and stopped at the Marine Mammal rescue to say hello to the rescued seals.
Then we had a shooting at a church just a few miles from where the fire was.
Needless to say-I watered down my house and hugged my dogs tight.
Watched the eclipse last night and appreciated the wonders of the natural worlds. Simple things make me the happiest-dogs, garden, home, cooking, children. What else could we possible need- ok-baby seals of course. They are so darn cute.

What’s cooking at our house? Done tge temps are consistently in the 90’snow, I’m doing lots of different salads and bread. Bread, bread and more bread. We just got a Zojirushi bread maker and I’ve been experimenting with every bread recipe I can find. My bread making skills by hand are disastrous (think loaves as heavy and hard as a rock) so getting this bread maker has been a godsend. Todays menu? Mexican Chicken Salad with Jalapeño Cheese Bread!
Mavis Butterfield says
We have the Zojirushi rice cooker, I bet the bread maker is a good one!

I tried that crock pot bread recipe that someone else commented on one of your other posts, it turned out great! I made it a few times now, it would help until your kitchen is back together!
