This past week started off pretty boring in the food department. Just like last week, most of our days were spent outside working in the garden or stacking wood so the majority of our meals were quick and easy ones.
Having staples on hand like beans, rice and canned items sure makes life a lot easier when you’re busy doing other stuff and don’t want to slow down and spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
Here are some photos of what we ate last week:
Costco chicken salad {without the apples}. This is probably one of the top 5 foods I could eat everyday and not get tired of. We also had tuna salad on toast. Canned chicken and tuna… Mmm Mmm good.
I also made a big bowl of quinoa salad. Ideally it’s best with a bit of fresh tomatoes and avocado, but since we didn’t have any I opened a jar of roasted red peppers and added those to the salad instead.
Beans and rice, rice and beans. Oh how I love them.
Grilled cheese on Dave’s Killer Bread. We’re down to our last few slices of American cheese. š I guess that means it’s time to hit up Costco and buy another 4 pound box of slices.
We also went on a double date with our neighbors to McLoons Lobster Shack for dinner one evening. The corn chowder was excellent! š
Also, on one of my mail runs I stopped in at the General Store for a snack and I bought a bag of possibly the worst tasting pretzels on the planet earth. Seriously, I thought they tasted like musty old cardboard that had been down in Grandma’s basement for 30 years.
Note to self: Avoid any product where cassava is listed as the first ingredient.
The HH spent $13.20 at the Airport Scammaford on produce.
Fact: Baby carrots taste nothing like real, whole carrots. Nothing.
He also bought a 1/2 gallon of milk for $2.79.
The Girl came for a visit and brought treats.
She’s started baking her own bread and lucky for us, she brings samples. š This time around it was chocolate babka. It must be nice to have an oven.
Have I ever told you she makes THE BEST pickety bit platters?
And she also brought her air fryer along so we could enjoy some of the fruits tarts my Mother in Law sent the HH for his birthday!
It was a good week. Lot’s of favorites and a few treats as well.
So how did YOU do with YOUR grocery dollars this past week? Is anyone else out there looking forward to shopping their gardens {maybe you already are?} this summer rather than buying produce at the grocery store? I know I am.
Here’s to another busy and productive week,
~Mavis

Your meals look good to me! Last week we celebrated Fatherās Day with family and I made two different breakfast casseroles so for the first half of the week we ate that as leftovers. Then I made chicken salad, pasta salad, and 4 bean salad for a lunch with visiting family and weāve been eating that ever since.
Today Iām cooking pulled chicken and we will have slider buns and coleslaw because Boise is going to have its first 100 degree day this yearā¦blech! I have a Rancho Gordo order arriving tomorrow so I think beans (and rice?) will make it onto the menu this week. I also visited Whole Foods yesterday so that my daughter could send an Amazon package back but of course I walked around the store and picked up a few cheeses from the fancy cheese case so pickety bits will be on the menu this week since the weather forecast calls for hot as the surface of the sun for the rest of the weekā¦
Hope everyone has a super great week with delicious food!

American cheese is on sale at COSTCO right now.
Over 75% of the “baby carrots we buy in the store are not really “baby” carrots. They are cut to look that way, and I think they taste awful. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_carrot

American cheese is on sale at Costco right now so you better go stock up!

We just ordered a new toaster oven and decided to get one with some additional abilities. I thought of you (with no oven) and thought you might like to take a look at it as something to get you thru the next few months with no oven. It is a toaster oven of course, but it also has a rotisserie function, convection oven, air fryer and dehydrator functions. I am really interested in the dehydrator as my current dehydrator is old and big and a big pain to dig out of the lower cabinet and an even bigger pain to wash. My hubby has been wanting to try an air fryer but didnāt want to just buy a separate appliance (to add to the many that we have). The rotisserie option is something new for me ā I think I might try a pork roast on that. The best part is that I can get rid of a couple of old appliances and make some room on my countertop!

PS: My shopping budget went out the window as we have a granddaughter visiting us this week and with 2 teenage girls in the house lots of snacks are a must! š

Oooh, that babka looks amazing!! Definitely next on my baking agenda. Although, Iām hankering for a berry galette. The price of fresh berries and cherries are outrageous right now.
Baby carrots = Soap. Period. So gross.

I have indeed been shopping my gardens. I made a discovery yesterday: Small snow turnips taste like white radishes–delicious! Ya can’t buy that at a grocery store.

Butternut squash pretzels with cassava flour? That makes me laugh because there are so many of these creative snacks nowadays that convince us we are eating out veggies. Remember those veggie straws, all the odd pastas made with chickpeas and other legumes and veggies, cauliflower pizza crust, zoodles and āriceā etc. Letās not forget about all of the trendy keto and gluten free stuff too.
As a person with terrible allergies, this stuff is such a joke as it has so many other weird additives and are often contaminated on processing equipment with other things. I miss the days of just simple food at the store with a few options. Why would I want āproteinā packed oatmeal or a hidden veggie to pretend to be healthier? Diet trends come and go, but the latest crazes are so goofy. I guess the food industry supports the medical industry and so many people believing they need to be on a special type of diet without consulting the professionals. I find myself spending a lot of time shopping at the grocery store analyzing ingredient lists and nutrition labels and it is appalling what things are put in some foods.
I got a sample of āplant powerā coffee the other day in the mail and it made me laugh because arenāt all coffee beans from a plant? Am I getting more plants (aka veggies) in my diet by consuming it?

Those Pretzel Crisps on your pickety bits plate are pretty good. We’ve tried the “Everything” ones and are going to try others.

“Gladiator” looks good to me. All those sweaty muscles… if you’re a football fan, try American Underdog, too. Frankly, you’d like it even if you weren’t.
Safeway has a new “Saturday Sampler” program that gives you a free product or two — provided you check in Saturday or later. I’ve started doing that, to take advantage of the program. (Plant-based sausage and some kind of drink this week.) Other than a $1.77 gallon-of-milk coupon, I wasn’t impressed.
You do check the Amazon Warehouse groceries listings, don’t you?
Making my first trip to a Goodwill outlet this week, ready to dig out all that good stuff that People Died Wearing — Or On. I’ve been to plenty of thrift shops before, but never an outlet.
Oh, and Mavis? You need to write a complaint letter about those pretzels!!
Mavis Butterfield says
Good Luck at the Goodwill Outlet. I hope you like it better than I did. š
Lynn Y says
I don’t have a GW outlet by me, but my GW is ‘fun.’ I live in a more high-end area where people dump things at GW because they just want to change their style. GW charges quite a bit during the winter, but during the summer the prices become more competitive and I can find things supercheap. The key is to be there at the right time. The increase in gas prices have a surprising benefit . . . the resellers are staying away if it is too far for them.
Annette says
American Underdog is great.

How go you get your time so fluffy?
