We spent $15.94 on groceries this past week so that means as of this morning, we’ve spent $1017.31 on groceries for this year.
That leaves us with only $182.69 left in our grocery budget for 2022 if we’re going to stay on track and only spend an average of $100 a month on groceries for the year. That’s about $8.70 a week for the next 21 weeks. Giddy up!
I think I’ll try to stay away from the shops this week. Afterall, we have milk, and plenty of stuff in the freezer and a garden that’s finally starting to produce {tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and green beans} right now so there really isn’t a need.
Hannaford $3.96
$0.99 for avocados? Yes please!
Farm Stand $2.00
I couldn’t resist. I tried growing cauliflower in the garden but all but 1 head has bolted already {I’m still holding out hope for the last one}.
Farm Stand $9.98
Possibly the smallest peaches on the planet earth. But hey, they were local and were perfect for the jam I was making so I’m not complaining.
Gleaned leftovers from the wedding I helped out with.
A giant bag of fancy salad greens, wrapped butters, 4 hamburger buns and a boatload of opened oyster shells for the garden {or a craft project?}. Pretty exciting if you ask me!
Here are some of the meals we ate last week:
Guacamole of course.
A cucumber and tomato salad from the garden and ravioli from the freezer.
Buttered rice and zucchini cooked in The Girl’s air fryer.
Buttered rice and cauliflower.
Air fryer salmon, summer squash and salad.
Pickety bits.
Diary, nuts, fruit, meat, grains… what more do you need?
Chicken and lobster with a fruity orzo salad and corn salad too. {The wedding staff ate the same meal as the wedding guests! How cool was that?}
And last but not least, last night’s big salad.
I have a feeling we’ll be eating a lot of salads this week. š
It was a FANTASTIC week in the meal department at our place this past week.
How about YOU? Did you get to eat anything exciting last week? Are most of your meals based on what’s coming from the garden? I know ours are.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

I long for the days when I can keep my meals simpler and not worry about feeding hungry teens. Oh the good side though – I cooked every night – yay! I dug through the freezer and found meats that needing using. I shopped sales at the grocery store and restocked some ready made meals (meatloaf, firecracker chicken meatballs, squash casserole, zucchini fritters). I am canning relish this morning with cucumbers from my garden. I have felt very productive in the kitchen and that is a good thing!

Our wedding was like that! I made sure all the people working joined us for dinner. Same food, same tables.
I had a student who lived on an oyster farm. She always painted the shells as Santa faces (the ripples in the shell make perfect beards) and gifted them as ornaments.
We’ve had an interesting week food-wise. We finally embraced curbside pickup for groceries since time is really at a premium with the baby. I was kind of getting back in the groove of cooking, but then our oven and dishwasher broke, so we’re eating a lot of takeout (when we have time to go get it) and random bites (when we don’t have time). I’m also eating far more these days, so figuring out food is challenging all around at the moment.

Oh Mel. I’m so glad you and the hubby and baby are doing well. One of these years will be a perfect one with no appliances breaking down, workers actually doing what they say they will do and so on. š Hugs to you.

oooh, I want the recipe for that fruity orzo salad.
Mrs. C. says
Mavis, sell the oyster shells along with the pistachio shells! Youāll be riiiiich!
Good eating week here, too. Broccoli cranberry salad, butternut squash casserole, and sweet potato quinoa soup. Coming up: Carolās grape salad and green chili cheese enchiladas!

My plan today (in the food department) is to make a batch of bacon (in the oven), try out the recipe for making potato chips in the air fryer and try another recipe for baking bread in the crockpot. Thatās the plan ā but my plan has a āwrinkleā in it . . . our well went out last night and so we donāt have any water. Waiting on the repairman . . .
PS: I am so very thankful that I got the dishes washed last night before the well went out. And, that we have plenty of bottles of water stocked up in the pantry and that I can still make coffee this morning! š

Someone is making cucumber hearts in the summer salad served with salmon and summer squash! Subtle ways to say ā I love youā are the best

Your meals all look wonderful! We are starting to harvest our cherry tomatoes and salad greens are still producing. I finally have an eggplant that’s visible on one of my plants, although it will be a while before that is ready. A neighbor gifted me two very large English cucumbers (mine aren’t producing yet), so I’m going to make a Greek quinoa salad with them. If you salt the chopped or sliced cucumbers and let them drain over a colander for about 15 minutes, then rinse them, they keep longer in a salad. I just learned this. Have a great week!

It’s been a crazy weekend. My new granddaughter ended up in the NICU so I was honored and happy to be occupied taking care of her 3 year old big brother. He kept me too busy to worry. He does best with handheld foods right now and loved being introduced to picketty bits. Thank you for sharing your meal ideas and daily life. A sweet landing spot in a chaotic time. My granddaughter is doing very well and may be home by mid-week. Keep on doing what you do. Blessings.

Hi there! Iāve always read your blog on my Feedly feed but your posts seemed to stopped pulling in after July 27. Did something change? Thanks!

Mavis your meals look perfect to meā¦here on the surface of the sun (Boise)ā¦it was over 100 degrees every day so meals were mostly of the donāt use the oven variety. We got takeout twice and a rotisserie chicken from Costco which we used for a couple of meals. Salads and quesadillas filled the rest of the week. I also cooked a pot of pinto beans Saturday morning before it got too hot and froze part for future meals and kept part for bean burritos.
We got an enormous brisket on a grocery grand opening special this weekend and my husband put it in his new smoker this weekend (insert eye roll for what I think of another man cooking appliance)ā¦once it was cooked we froze part of it for future meals. One of my favorite restaurant salads has brisket on it and Iāve learned to replicate it pretty well so that will be on the menus for sure. Today wil be 106 degrees and then it will ācool downā to the 90s so salads, pickety bits, and grilled hot dogs are my plan. I also found some beautiful melons at a nearby fruit stand and I think sliced melon can be dinnerā¦especially if it is followed by ice creamā¦stay cool peopleā¦summer will eventually go awayā¦canāt wait for fall!

We ate some takeout this week as we learned our 4 year old dog is in renal failure and have been shuttling her back and forth to the hospital ā¹ļø
I baked some cod to along with rice and the most delicious salad all from the gardenā¦cucumbers, tomatoes and at last lemon boy tomatoes. It was fantastic!!!
I made a stick up trip to the farmers market and Samās and the totals are ooof. I spent the weekend in my kitchen canning and prepping items for the freezer and rejoicing I the energy to do so.
Soil testing is on my list of things to do so we can harvest more after enriching the dirt. I am grateful for my chest freezer and a husband that only minimally freaks out when I head out to buy groceries.

Angieā¦so sorry about your sweet dog. Big hug to you.

Sending you hugs, Angie. Itās awful when our four legged babies become seriously ill. And even worse when they are still so young. Donāt know about your exact situation but they have made some great veterinary strides in treating life threatening issues. Hoping for the best for you and your furry one.

You should sell the oyster shells like you are the drift wood! There is a lady on YouTube from Louisiana that makes crosses on drift wood with them and I’m sure there are other followers of hers that don’t have access to that number of shells!

Boston butt on sale .99 a pound! Slow smoked with a dry rub on it. Yum. Many good meal will be eaten off this. Will eat couple of meals now. Freeze rest in meal portion size

Looks like you are back on Feedly! Yay!

Mavis,
Love your garden and your ability to harvest, but I am having a problem with twin-destructo squirrels, who are pulling everything out or just removing leaves. I do have a netting over my garden, but that does not seem to help.
Any thoughts?
