Well the good news is, the appliances {the old oven, the new refrigerator and new dishwasher} have been moved inside the house, so that’s all good.
But we’re still without any plumbing in the kitchen so I’m still washing dishes in the tiny bathroom sink and the larger ones {mixing bowls and pots} outside.
Which is all fine and dandy {not really, but what else am I going to do at this point} but still kind of a pain. Luckily though it’s not freezing outside. Yet.
Ahh the joy of home renovations.
Scammaford: $9.38.
The HH was out running errands and asked if I needed anything… 1 gallon of milk was $4.69 {the half gallon size was $3.69!} and the CHEAPEST OPTION for eggs was $4.69 for a dozen! Are you kidding me?
The HH has to run down south this week for an appointment and I’m tempted to have him stop by Costco and pick up some eggs {they’ve got to be cheaper at Costco, right?} and some fancy cheese for the holidays.
Only I’m not sure he’d be able to stick to just those 2 items if he did pop into Costco. Hmm.
Here’s some photos of the meals we ate last week:
Freezer meal meatloaf, stuffing and corn.
Freezer meal lasagna with garden fresh green beans.
Freezer meal manicotti with garden fresh green beans.
Pasta with green beans. Yes, it was a bumper crop for green beans this fall. I was also able to freeze 2 gallons bags full of them this time around.
New England style saturday night beans. Cooked in an oven!
And a roasted chicken dinner with garden fresh potatoes and green beans.
And I even made a batch of my favorite chocolate brownie cookies too. It’s nice to be using a real oven again. Even if it’s not the one of my dreams. 😉
So what’s been cooking at YOUR place? Are you ready for comfort food season? I know I am.
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

We’ve been through 2 kitchen remodels at houses we’ve flipped. We spent the $ on cheap plywood or used some we had lying around to have countertops while we waited for the granite we had ordered. It took us a few weeks to realize we could do it – so just wanted to share the idea in case you have a piece or two around that can become temporary tops. It doesn’t damage the cabinets at all & is so worth it!

I bought eggs at Costco 2 weeks ago – they were 6.79 for 2 dozen organic eggs. I don’t know what the “regular” white eggs cost.
We have one adult chicken that lays an egg every day (4 of our chickens were killed by either a raccoon or possum and one jumped in front of the riding lawn mower – we have never had a chicken do that before). We now have 6 chicks that should be old enough to start laying eggs at the end of January. And we have an electric fence around them all . . .

OMG – how horrible – why did she commit suicide by way of lawnmower????? So sorry that happened to you.
Rosemary Calhoun says
We don’t know why she did that. The chickens were always afraid of the lawn mower and would run. Apparently, there was a blade of grass or a bug that she just had to have. This happened a day or so after one of the other chickens was killed – maybe she was just off her game because of that.

Oh Mavis I’m so sorry about the new oven arriving damaged. Doing dishes in the bathroom sink and outside…how rustic. My husband is still working on the master bedroom/bathroom remodel and the toilet is artfully placed in the middle of the bathroom right now so fun times here as well. The good news is we have two more bathrooms upstairs so we aren’t without. If he ever suggest remodeling the kitchen I will commit a violent crime.
It’s still very warm in Boise so we aren’t doing soups yet. This weekend we attended a family birthday and my dad brought me a bunch of peaches, some Fuji apples, and a box of corn. Last night we had grilled chicken, instant pot sweet and spicy bbq beans (yum!) and corn on the cob…yep we’re still doing summer food. I got a spiral ham out of the freezer to do this week and those beans will be delicious with it also.

Is there a recipe you like for the beans?
Thanks!

I like to do pick up orders from Sam’s club to help me stick to my list… maybe Costco has that option as well?
I have my own chickens…. So I get sticker shock when my feed bill comes in 15% higher in one month and then another 20% the following month!!!
I have just learned of your $100 a month thing and I am praying I can learn how to do this myself- 4 adults here
Thank yoi

Eggs have been crazy-when they can be found. Check prices online for eggs at stores that have order pick-up. Walmart is often less expensive than the BJ’s here, but it also can be OUT of fresh, whole eggs. Last week DeMoula’s Market Basket had Egglands eggs cheaper than their house brand, and these were less than the price at BJ’s. Shopping online to at least check prices is easy and can save time as well as money.

I always love reading your Monday posts. They remind me that you can eat well and at home, and also you often have some simple meals thrown in there. We were without power for over a week in SWFL after hurricane Ian. I am thankful that we didn’t lose all of our food, thanks to neighbors with generators who let me store food. So, now that the power is on, I’m not in full on buy everything mode. And am making myself go through our freezer inventory and other items. #Thankful

I’m sorry about your kitchen issues but it will be so nice! Washing outside can’t be much fun! Brrrrr One good thing is that Costco is coming to Scarborough- supposedly in spring 2023!
Very exciting!

I heard that! Very excited!

We’ve been cooking some Indian and Thai stuff lately, which is so tasty. Mavis, your cookies look yummy!
Eggs? $5.69 for 12, $7-something for 18 in our neck of the woods in the last few days, and that’s for conventional eggs. Organic eggs, which I usually buy, are less.

Is there a Walmart in the area? I’m not a Walmart shopper but I do stop in and pick up eggs when I can. Lately they’ve been $7.99 for 5 dozen.
It must be very challenging feeding hungry kids these days.

A recipe for a beef/pasta dish appeared in our paper this past Sunday so I am cooking it tonight. We had all the ingredients at home – it is similar to spaghetti but you put cooked egg noodles on the bottom and a tomato-beef sauce on top. I am making one 2 Quart casserole size and four individual size ones in baking dishes for the freezer. My goal in the next week or so is to take a complete inventory of what we have in all our cabinets, freezer, and my canning jars. I want to meal plan for as many meals as I can squeak out so we quit buying so much food. My husband LOVES to go to the grocery store for one thing and he usually comes back with more.

I have been putting the garden right and prepping for winter garlic’s and onions. I am starting to transition to perennials. Who knew there were so many perennials that were veggies. There are leeks, garlic’s, root veggies, roots, fruit .,beans, this way once everything gets established it all about maintenance. We even started mushroom beds this year…How big is your property? I love the religious family plot can’t wait to hear all about what you have planned for next year.

We get eggs delivered by the tray (30 ) , somehow we get through them all weekly .
It works out much cheaper than shop eggs as direct from a free range farm.
It’s around £4 for 30 eggs, they’re assorted sizes .

And here I thought $3 for a dozen eggs from my neighbors chickens was a lot….. I’ll continue to be thankful for that price.
A gallon of milk at my WinCo in Oregon was $3.29 last week
Terry says
Eggs here, everywhere you look (grocery store, convenience store, walmart) are $5 a dozen…. EXCEPT Egglands Best eggs, which are still $3.15 a dozen. Interesting….
