With still no plumbing in the kitchen, last week’s meals basically fell into 2 categories; freezer meals, and large one pot meals. I’m so glad I had the foresight to plan a few meals ahead of time and pop them in the freezer before the HH ripped out the plumbing.
Because seriously, one can only wash so many dishes in the bathroom sink before going a little mad.
Hopefully though, the plumber will show up soon and I’ll be able to get back in the kitchen and make casseroles and mashed potatoes and cookies and all manner of delicious things.
There are so many recipes I want to try this holiday season… I can hardly stand it.
Here’s a look at some of the meals we ate last week.
Chicken and rice freezer meal.
Beetloaf, stuffing and corn.
Saturday night beans with jalapeno cheddar scones.
Cinnamon raisin Dutch oven bread.
Pumpkin chocolate chip bread. This turned out fantastic! I’ll share the recipe tomorrow.
And last but not least, my big grocery store shopping trip; Milk and oranges.
When we first moved to Maine you could get a half gallon of milk for less than $2. Nowadays though, it just doesn’t make sense to buy a half gallon anymore so I’ve started freezing the other half until I need it.
I mean really, $3.29 for a half gallon or $4.77 for a full gallon. It ain’t rocket science.
Food prices. Everytime I go into the grocery store it costs more. Grrrr.
So how did YOU do this past week? Did you make anything exciting? Have you started to see any good deals in the flyers yet? Curious minds want to know.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Hi Mavis! I’ve followed your blog for many years and love the inspiration. Moved this year from WA to FL, after the hurricane, stores have been sparse but as a newcomer to Aldi’s, I have found some great deals. Milk and egg prices are still ridiculous but with no garden here, produce prices have been a saving grace at Aldis in particular. Cant find fresh beets for the life of me though!
Susie says
LisaMarie, I don’t know where in FL you are (I’m in DeLand), but Publix seems to always have fresh beets. I love Aldi too! So happy when they opened TWO of them here!
LisaMarie says
Thanks for the tip! Im south near Ft Myers. Will check Publix! Its always an adventure finding the deals in new areas…
Ashley Bananas says
LisaMaria, I’m in the Villas near Belltower. Howdy neighbor!!

I’m in NC and I have never see 1 1/2% milk until you mentioned it. I’m wondering if it’s a regional thing or a manufacturer thing. All I have ever seen was full, 2% 1% and skim.
This corporate greed trend is getting out of hand. They blamed the original raise in prices on COVID and lack of labor and rising fuel prices. COVID is spotty at best, you’ve adjusted to labor availability and fuel has dropped. How about dropping a few prices?!?

my sister shared a recipe for her new favorite soup, lentil barley and i finally tried it!! so happy i made a double batch!!
GrannyB says
Will you share the recipe please?

Found a couple good deals this last week.
Fred Meyer and QFC have Del Monte vegetables (corn, beans, and peas) for $1
There are $1/2 coupons hanging with the products = .50 each
Regular price is $2.49 a can!!! Crazy!!!
We don’t eat a lot of canned stuff, but for that price…..there’s some in the pantry!!!
QFC had all their Progresso soups for .99 Regular price is $4.49!!!!! If you bought 9 you got a $3 OYNO coupon – which rolled. Got a bunch of Clam Chowder b/c it is Gluten Free and the best bang for your buck, too
Once in a while you happen upon a great deal like that. Unadvertised and awesome,
The frugal in me always has my eyes open for bargains when shopping 🙂

I’ve heard in the news that both Aldi and Walmart are going to lower their prices to two or three years ago. Not sure if that’s just on the turkey or Thanksgiving type sides as well. So keep your eyes open!
Carolina Cooper says
Aldi here in New Hampshire is selling turkeys for $1.07 lb. Good price compared to other stores around here like Hannaford, Market Basket and Shaws.

I stopped by Kroger on Saturday just to take advantage of my digital coupons and best customer bonus coupons that they send me in the mail. I walked out with 18 count large eggs for $0.19/package – I bought the limit of 5 packages. I also bought Honeycrisp apples for $1.88/lb which is the lowest price I have seen and back for $4.49/lb.
The price of food these days has stopped shocking me and now is just plain frightening. I pray before I go, leave lots of items on the shelves that I would normally buy and shop multiple stores to find the best deal I can. Once we eat down the freezer a bit I will be looking to purchase bulk beef from a farmer and we will be making trips to the state farmer’s market to help ease the costs a little bit.

I paid $5.99 for a dozen large white eggs in Massachusetts. Food Prices have gone through the roof.
Mavis Butterfield says
That is nuts!!!
Jennifer says
Here in NC, A dozen is around $3, but Eggland’s Best is just under $4.
Mimi says
I’ll be looking for your pumpkin bread recipe – I’ve got lots of pureed pumpkin in the freezer.
I buy the gallon size milk and freeze it too. We mostly use it for making yogurt (so cheap if you make it yourself) or in recipes. I was never one to bulk-buy groceries but I’m changing my ways to save $$$. Between the huge amount of staple items I’ve stashed away, the weekly sourdough bread baking and the continuing garden harvest, the weekly grocery expenses are shrinking quite a bit.
Patti says
This week I bought two chuck roasts (on sale for $3.49/lb.) and two packages of boneless pork chops (on sale for $1.99/lb). When I see good prices I try to stock up. We cooked the chuck roast in the slow cooker and have tons of meat so I plan to make beef vegetable soup with some and package some to put away to use for fajitas later besides the several meals we will eat this week with it. On a “frugal fail” note, we went out for breakfast at our usual tiny diner and they were closed due to staffing shortage. So we went to the big name restaurant and our breakfasts totaled up to $38.00!!!! We will be cooking our eggs and bacon at home for awhile.

Aldi dropped some of their prices, “Thanksgiving Essentials” to 2019 prices. It goes through until November 29th. While there this weekend, I got a 3lb bag of pears for $1.99, 3lbs of Honeycrisp apples for $2.15, and a pomegrante for $.99. They dropped prices on brown sugar and chocolate chips. Butter, milk and eggs were the same price they’ve been for awhile now. I’m hoping the thanksgiving price cuts will change each week.
My parents picked up the Thanksgiving turkey from our local grocery store, Giant (MD/VA/DC). $.37/lb if you spent $25 on other grocery items. The same brand was selling at another local grocery store for over $2/lb.
Cindy says
A head of iceberg lettuce was 4.99 and leaf lettuce was 7.99 at my local store? What is going on??
JulieP says
Across the pond we have Lidl and Aldi, not too far apart in prices, produce, can’t beat the price. Lidl eggs £2.19 a dozen for free range which is $5.02 and Aldi milk for semi-skimmed which is 1.5% at £1.55 for 4 pints would be $3.56 for a gallon. Everything is getting more and more expensive. Here they blamed it first on covid then on a HGV driver shortage, no one mentions brexit but I am sure it’s not helped and now it’s he war in the Ukraine, I don’t know what to think but I do know that people here are beginning to suffer especially the low income earners.
JulieP says
Sorry meant to put $2.51 a dozen for eggs, why I double that I don’t know, sorry!
Joanna says
Here in Michigan 6.49 for a dozen of eggland best eggs. Head of lettuce 3.99 and Roman hearts 7.95 for a pack of 3!!! Gallon of Milk 6.49. The shelves at
Kroger are barren most of the time?
Norma says
I have noticed in Washington State which has Fred Meyer (Kroger ) that since Covid their shelves are empty a lot in things like rice, beans and pasta. I hardly ever shop there anymore. I always go to Winco.
Mavis Butterfield says
I miss Winco!
