Last week The Girl and I hopped a flight {well really 2 flights, first a teeny tiny plane and then a big one} to fly to the West Coast to visit my parents for an Early Thanksgiving.
Monkey Boy moved to the East Coast a while ago so we were just there to pop in and hang out with my parents. Not a lot has changed since we were there a few years ago, except that there are more people, more condos and more traffic. š
Going from a tiny coastal town in Maine to a big city is always a bit interesting as there are so {soooooo} many more things that catch your eye. Sometimes it even makes me feel like Iāve landed on another planet.
Case in point: Chick-fil-A. Did you know they make breakfast sandwiches?
A hot buttery biscuit with a warm piece of battered chicken at 7am. I canāt think of a better way to start the day.
The Girl and I split one and immediately wished we had gotten our own. But there were a few more food stops we wanted to make so we didnāt.
Things like Beecherās mac and cheese.
And Have’A Corn Chips. {Hands down the best chips on the planet earth. And they’re extreamly hard to find!}.
And bubble waffles.
Ahh yes. The PNW, itās a fun place to go back to every once in a while, but Maine has my heart. I love it here and I can’t see us ever living anywhere else. {Unless of course it’s a private island in Maine. I’m still holding out for that.}
Here’s a look at the rest of the food I ate last week {once I got back from the PNW}.
Turkey Lurkey. He was buttered and browned and delicious.
I kept it simple this year: Baked potato casserole, sweet potato casserole, herbed corn and turkey.
A turkey casserole the day after.
And turkey soup the day after that.
There was also split pea and ham.
And because clearly I was on a soup kick, there was some heirloom bean soup last week as well.
Comfort food season has finally arrived. And Iām loving every minute of it.
This week I think Iāll get started on some baked goods. December is just 3 days away and everyone knows that any calories consumed during the month of December donāt count.
Keep Calm and Eat On.
Thatās going to be my motto for the next month or so.
How about YOU? Are you ready for all the cookies and cakes and sugary goodness? Do you have a favorite recipe you like to make around this time of year? Do tell. Curious minds want to know.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Hi Mavis!
Weird question: how did you get interested in rug hooking?
Also, Iāve been wondering about Monkey Boy for awhile so was glad to see your brief mention of him!
I have no idea what a bubble waffle is but off to google it nowā¦

20+ years ago I saw an antique rug in a magazine and decided to give rug hooking a try. I’ve been hooked ever since. š

āSurgery goodnessā ??? Either that is a seriously funny autocorrection or youāre waiting to see if anyone catches the hint about some coming news. I am serious hoping that itās just a little laugh from autocorrectā¦

Ha ha ha. Thanks for catching that! š

When I leave the PNW (in 2-4 years we hope), I will miss Juanitaās chips. The lightest, crunchiest best.
Funny to see you a my CFA. Too bad you have to eat outside. Brrrrrā¦.

You split a Chicken Biscuit???? No way!! Chick fil A breakfast a couple times a month here for years upon years–probably ten.
Laura says
HaveāA corn chips are seriously the best chips ever. And they really are hard to find. But I always grab a bag when I see them.

Soo-o ready for the holiday baking season! Cookies & pies are my favorite during the holiday season. Say, my daughter and I were watching a Hallmark Christmas movie “A Royal Corgi Christmas” (I know, smooshy!;) this weekend and there was a scene where they’re trying to bake a cottage pie & due to being a reader of your blog I realized they put the pie into an AGA range to bake!! It was even the lovely light blue color you have picked out for your stove.

Thatās where your new stove went!?
How many people in that little plane?
I really like hearing about your adventures at home and away!

Christmas baking is the best. I will be making biscotti and cuccidati (filled Italian cookies). So many happy memories of my dear Madre.

I wait every year for cut out (Santa, reindeer, bells, etc.) cookies with icing. But, no sprinkles or colored sugar. It gets in my teeth. š They gotta have lots of icing! And, fudge made with sweetened condensed milk.
A gift from my very thoughtful Mother-in-law many years ago, was a recipe box with several of her recipes, all hand written. One of the ingredients for a chocolate cake, called for “butter the size of an egg”. My husband still chuckles over that.
