Grow 1,000 Pounds of Vegetables In The Religious Family Sized Garden FAIL
We got a wee bit of snow the other day… And it was super exciting. Lucy loved it. It didn’t stick around long though and didn’t really bother any of the vegetables we still have planted in the front garden.
A big snow storm. That’s what I want. Then you really know winter has arrived!
Empty The Canning Cupboard / Fill The Canning Cupboard
More progress on eating down the pantry… I cracked open 2 jars of Split pea soup and a few jars of salsa. We’re getting there! The new plan is to have this cupboard empty by next year’s canning season.

Goals already accomplished 2023:
Go On A Solo Adventure. Done
A solo adventure to Fair Isle. I don’t think I could have picked a more unique, isolated and cozy spot to spend a few weeks. I’m already dreaming of going back.
Take An Adult Education Class Done
The Girl and I took a 3 day British Baking Classics course at King Arthur Flour in Norwich, Vermont and had a good time.
Set Aside 200 Items For A Yard Sale DONE!
The yard sale was a great success! The Duck Lady and I were both able to get rid of a lot of items we didn’t want and as an added bonus, I only had 1 box of stuff to drop off at the thrift store. Yee-Haw!
How about YOU? How are you coming along with your goals for this year?
~Mavis
Mel says
Not sure about the driftwood, but I wonder if it’s the wrong time of year in most places for egg shells if it’s a garden thing. I know you can amend soil before winter, but I’m not sure how many people do. Commercial oyster shell is cheaper, but egg prices have also come down, so maybe people are saving their own.
My goals have been a little scattershot this year in that I’ve sort of just added projects as they’ve popped up and kind of added or circled back as needed.
**I finished our playroom, so now I’m working on toy storage throughout the house.
**We had to find a nanny before I went back to work, and we managed to do that, but now I’m working on a promotion to a permanent position.
**We worked on allergy exposure therapy for our baby and are now working on that plus physical therapy and occupational therapy for sensory issues.
**I had initially scary medical results that turned out to be nothing, but I developed a massive infection from the testing, so I’ve been working on kicking that since August.
**I’m currently working on getting ready for winter and the holidays. I bought the toddler boots, snow pants, coat, hat, mittens, and sled, and I bought myself a battery-heated coat. So, in doing that, I’ve probably guaranteed us an 80 degree winter.
Allison Kitfield says
Oh Mel, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been worried about you. SO GLAD the scare was just that. Doesn’t sound like a time when you can rest much but try to whenever possible…so many things on the “to do” list really can slide, and your health is everything, to you and your family, so take care of yourself.
Linda says
I use the block of Nonesuch Mincemeat for my pies. I use less water than the recipe and about a cup or more of applesauce and no egg. I love mincemeat pies. Even without the egg, I get a very firm pie that holds its shape after it is cut. I was skeptical the first time I made one.
I keep a basil plant next to my chair in the living room since I found out basil clears sinuses. Also, I can smell it all the time, and I love basil. I could roll in it!
Did you ever read the book I recommended, THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS by Sarah Orne Jewett? After studying it, I wanted to go to Maine.
Practical Parsimony
Mavis Butterfield says
I didn’t see it on my audiobook list. 🙁 I’ll have to see if they have it at the library.
Nancy says
Yes, I use Nonesuch too. AND add a bit of brandy or whiskey! I love mincemeat pie and make it once a year (hubby not a great fan), and with a big spoonful of homemade whipped cream. Heaven!
Margo says
Don’t know if Mavis read it, but I just got it and plan for some cozy evenings reading.
Rosemary says
We are finally getting around to finish some remodeling in my bathroom (new toilet and floor). I bought this house 20 years ago, so it has been a long time coming . . . ha ha. We do have 3 bathrooms and the other 2 have been done along with all the other rooms. For some reason, we just put off this one last bathroom.
I finished decluttering everything . . . except the bookcase. It may just need to be re-organized . . . maybe this week. I am still finding a few things here and there to get rid of.
On the list for this week is making cookies! I will be making a bunch of cookies to send to the grandkids for Thanksgiving. Then I need to finish making the dough for the cookies I make at Christmas. I need about 18 more eggs to finish that up and the chickens seem to be slowing down in the egg making department. I may end up buying some. I like to get the dough made ahead of time and stored in the freezer until I need to use it – it saves me time and energy later (which I can definitely use!)
SueD says
That is the mincemeat I use, Robertson’s. Some years I make half a pie. this year I may make tarts, and freeze half before baking, for Christmas. I like Robertson’s because it isn’t very sweet.
Mary says
I was watching one of the British baking shows and they made little tart mincemeat pies so I looked up how to make mincemeat. It looks super easy and I have all the ingredients so I may give it a whirl.
Today I am making my grandmothers fruitcake recipe called 7 Pound Fruitcake. Makes 7 one pound loaves. It goes in the freezer for one month.
Kippy says
Favorite Aunty used to make regular mince meat pies, Mom made the little tart size mincemeat pies. I think they used jarred mincemeat. Friends and family are all trying to cut down on desserts. So, no holiday baking here aside from krumkake.
Allison Kitfield says
Homemade mincemeat is not that hard to make, but I lazily find the Nonesuch on sale after season and save for the next year. Lattice crust, a couple of finely chopped apples, and a tablespoon or two of Myers Dark rum make for a great pie!!!!
