Make 12 Totally British Recipes In The AGA.
I made a batch of mini mince meat pies. And now I never have to make them again! 🙂 I tried two different fillings {one by Robertson’s and one homemade} and while the crusts turned out nice and flakey I quickly learned I am not a fan of mince meat.
And so now I know. So it’s on to the next British recipe.
British recipes I’ve made in the AGA so far:
- Pear Frangipane Tart
- Mince Meat Pies
- Cauliflower, Broccoli and Squash Casserole
- English Muffins
- Currant Scones
- Sticky Toffee Pudding

Grow 1,000 Pounds of Vegetables In The Religious Family Sized Garden FAIL
Our garden was an epic fail this year due to the non stop rain Maine received this summer. EPIC FAIL. The thing about gardening though… There’s always next year. Right?
Empty The Canning Cupboard / Fill The Canning Cupboard
Toast and jam. It never gets old. And lucky for us, we still have about 50+ jars of jam left in the canning cupboard to finish up before next summer.
Make $500 Selling Plants, Flowers or Vegetables {I made $95} FAIL
I gave up selling plants and vegetables at the farm stand but I do have some beautiful orchids and other house plants growing in the dining room.
I’ve never been big on house plants… But once a gardener, always a gardener and it is so very nice to have something to tend to during the winter months here in Maine. And the best part? Unlike gardening outdoors, there’s no weeds to pull inside. 🙂
This year I sold:
{3} rosemary plants @$3.00 each = $9.00
{8} 6-packs of corn @ $3 each = $24.00
{4} 6-packs of basil @ $3 each = $12
{9} 6- packs of pea starts @$2 each {then I upped the price to $3} = $24.00
{4} Daffodil bouquets @$3 & $4 each = $14.00
{4} Chives @$2 each = $8.00

Goals already accomplished 2023:
Go On A Solo Adventure. Done
A solo adventure to Fair Isle. I don’t think I could have picked a more unique, isolated and cozy spot to spend a few weeks. I’m already dreaming of going back.
Take An Adult Education Class Done
The Girl and I took a 3 day British Baking Classics course at King Arthur Flour in Norwich, Vermont and had a good time.
Go On a Staycation/Craftcation With The Girl DONE
We went on a mini craftcation and had a great time! We are still hoping to head to Quebec City for the Christmas Market but so far our schedules don’t line up… So we’ll see.
Set Aside 200 Items For A Yard Sale DONE!
The yard sale was a great success! The Duck Lady and I were both able to get rid of a lot of items we didn’t want and as an added bonus, I only had 1 box of stuff to drop off at the thrift store. Yee-Haw!
How about YOU? How are you coming along with your goals for this year?

I just finished up another goal that I had. I wanted to edit and copy all the home movies that I had taken of my kids growing up (they are now 47, 44 and 41). I also wanted to copy all the photos that I had taken of them during their childhood. Then I decided to edit and copy home movies of me as a child (my family got an 8mm movie camera in 1960 so that’s when the videos started). Thankfully, I had already had the 8mm transferred to VHS tapes so that all I had to do was transfer them to DVD and then onto my laptop. The videos of my kids were all on VHS (I had a camcorder back in the day), so I transferred all those to DVD and then onto my laptop. Finally, I copied all the photos of my childhood, my mom’s childhood and wedding and my grandmother’s childhood. They are copied onto USB drives so that my kids can transfer them easily to their own computers. I made a little “program” of sorts so that they could jump around to different parts of the video to see certain things. (Basically, so that they could find themselves on the video easily instead of having to watch the whole thing if they didn’t want to). I will give this to them at Christmas. I can’t even tell you how many hours this took but I am so glad that I did it. Now our family history will not be lost when I leave this earth.
Tracy says
This is awesome! I need to make this a priority for next year. I’d love to know your secret for transfering VHS to DVD.
Rosemary says
I have a combination VCR & DVD player – as the VHS tape is playing, I can record onto the DVD.
Linda says
That is an amazing feat! I don’t have so much to copy, and I am not doing it. By the way, usb drives lose information a bit at a time, so eventually some things will be lost over time and with use. Make backups.
Practical Parsimony
Rosemary says
The kids will transfer the videos & photos from the USB drive to their computers/laptops. The USB drive is the easier way for me to give them all the data. They know to back things up.
Annette says
Need your orchid secrets.
Tc says
As a die hard Brit i love mince pies and sausage rolls, we had them every Christmas growing up. Robertsons is the best a d they are best served warm with tea or sherry
Mimi says
The market set the price. I bet your trex would sell at a lower price
Emily says
Your orchids are beautiful! Did they come from one of your recent Trader Joe’s trips? Ours always has beautiful orchids.
Mavis Butterfield says
I bought the large one nearly 3 months ago at the Home Depot and the small ones came from Trader Joe’s. The prices on their orchids are fantastic!
Cecile says
Everytime I read your update of your goals I get the sense that you are being way too hard on yourself about the garden being a fail this year. I know it is crushing when something you set your mind to doesn’t pan out but that’s just life. Living in one of the largest agricultural areas of Ontario Canada we can tell the price of our produce by the weather! You know come August the prices are going to be high if we’ve had lots of rain, if it’s a good summer and bumper crops not so high! Around here it’s a way of life. The other thing you have to think about is drainage, soil content and quality. Do you have enough sand in the soil for drainage as I doubt you have drainage tiles in your lawn? If it’s high clay you may need to rethink what you plant. If you want success most of the time, you need to build that greenhouse! I love your snowman embroidery you posted!
