17 Things I Want To Do In 2023 – Week 47 of 52
Earn $1,493.04 {Last Year’s Grocery Expenses} Selling Totally Random Things Online
With only 4 weeks to go until the end of the year, it’s not looking good for hitting this goal. Although I must admit, I did sort of lose my steam to list random found/collected bits a few months ago so I’m not too surprised.
No movement on the T-Rex. I thought for sure it would have sold by now!

Grow 1,000 Pounds of Vegetables In The Religious Family Sized Garden FAIL
We had our first little bit of snow!
And then it melted so I hurriedly went out and tidied up the front garden and basically put it to bed for the winter. I left the leeks in the ground because I like looking at them and the kale is still going strong so I left that too.
But everything else… Is done for the year.

Goals already accomplished 2023:
Go On A Solo Adventure. Done
A solo adventure to Fair Isle. I don’t think I could have picked a more unique, isolated and cozy spot to spend a few weeks. I’m already dreaming of going back.
Take An Adult Education Class Done
The Girl and I took a 3 day British Baking Classics course at King Arthur Flour in Norwich, Vermont and had a good time.
Go On a Staycation/Craftcation With The Girl DONE
We went on a mini craftcation and had a great time! We are still hoping to head to Quebec City for the Christmas Market but so far our schedules don’t line up… So we’ll see.
Set Aside 200 Items For A Yard Sale DONE!
The yard sale was a great success! The Duck Lady and I were both able to get rid of a lot of items we didn’t want and as an added bonus, I only had 1 box of stuff to drop off at the thrift store. Yee-Haw!
How about YOU? How are you coming along with your goals for this year?

Get ready to love Trader Joe’s even more- they sell Winter peonies! I got a bunch this week & there were only a few bunches left.
Mavis Butterfield says
Wow! Thanks for letting me know Linda!

We actually DO have a cranberry bog in our back yard – several within walking distance too! In fact I usually fill my freezer with home made cranberry sauce and then eat it year round over plain yogurt and oatmeal (raw uncooked). It’s so healthy. Thanks for the recipe Mavis and this week I ordered my first hooking pattern from you. Anxiously awaiting its arrival.

I don’t remember where I first heard about this, but has any tried wrapping and storing buds in the fridge?

Emily says
Have you ever tried storing your peony buds in the fridge to open later? Your post reminded me that I’ve heard it talked about and I found this article: https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/storing_peonies_to_bloom_at_a_later_date
I wouldn’t want to risk wasting a bud while my plants are small, but when they’re mature I might try it with a few.

I’ve accomplished many goals for 2023, but I have come to realize that I have to rethink my 2024 goals due to health issues. But I have goals already written down, but I have a few more. I break them down into sections like learning, financial, physical, etc. It has helped me tremendously.

Re: mincemeat pies. There are any number of recipes for mincemeat out there and the ingredients make all the difference in the world. I DO NOT like mincemeat with tallow added and those that contain chopped meat are usually iffy for me.
I’ve tried green tomato mincemeat and didn’t mind it at all. It has that spicy flavor, without the icky stuff, it uses up the inevitable green tomatoes at the end of the season, can be canned and keeps well on the shelf for a year+.
2 qts green tomatoes finely chopped, 1 qt peeled, tart apples finely chopped, 1 1/4 c. golden raisins (golden is important; different, milder, fruitier flavor from regular), 1 1/4 c. packed brown sugar, 1 1/4 c. white sugar, 1 c. water, 1/3 c. vinegar (AC or white), 1/8-1/4 c. lemon juice, 2 T. minced orange or lemon peel, 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp. salt, 1/8 tsp. allspice, 1/8 tsp. cloves. Put all ingredients in a large kettle or Dutch oven. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until thickened to desired consistency. Pack hot into jars, leaving 1/2″ head space. Process 25 minutes in a boiling water bath. Makes about 6 pints. Try it sometime, you really might like it! Happy Holidays to you and your family!
