About a month ago, the Handsome Husband came home with a bunch of free, recycled pallets for me. My original plan was to build a large potato tower with the recycled pallets. However once I started to put the pallets together, I quickly noticed the large structure would be an eye sore. So after staring at the wood pallets for a week {and not wanting to ask the HH to take the pallets back} I came up with another idea.
A wood pallet garden.
If you have a tiny backyard, poor soil or just want to make your husband nuts by tossing wood pallets all over the backyard, I highly suggest hunting down a few recycled wood pallets, {chemical free of course}. My wood pallet garden is still in early stages. My plan is to weed the surrounding area, haul in a few wheelbarrows of dirt, and then plant a few perennial flowers around the tree trunks. I wanted to show you the “before” picture now in case you wanted to implement this garden idea in your very own backyard.
All you really need to get this project off the ground is a wood pallet, bag of potting soil and a few seeds. Using a recycled wood pallet to start a garden can be a great space saver, plus as a bonus, there is no soil to til or weed. This is exactly the kind of project young children would love, especially if they could have their own wood pallet.
Thinking about starting a wood pallet garden? Here are a few more suggestions:
Last week I wrote a guest post over on Coupon Connections titled “How to Turn a Recycled Pallet into a Salad Garden.” If you are new to this type of gardening and want to learn how to create a salad garden using a wood pallet, you can read the detailed post HERE.
Also, if you an apartment or condo dweller and want to “grow up” a vertical pallet garden might be the way to go instead. You can go HERE to read more about this method.

Mavis, I noticed you did not back these with landscape fabric. Was this because you had no plans to make these planters vertical?

Mavis, I had the same question…..if there is no backing would the dirt not run out of the side in case rain pours? here in North Idaho it tends to pour once in a while….also, have any ideas on a cheap garden fabric?
