Well finally there is a bit of green in every one of our 16 raised garden beds. 100 tomato plants, Swiss chard, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, herbs, peas, beets, onions, carrots, and even a few more radishes currently occupy the 4′ by 8′ beds. Also, if you look a little to the left you can also see I have planted a few cucumber and zucchini starts as well.
At this point, pretty much everything has been planted, with the exception of winter squash and a few more tomato plants {you can never have enough tomatoes}. Now, all I need to do is keep everything watered and have the sling shot ready in case Scott the Squirrel or Chippy the Chipmunk come by and try and steal my food.
The beans I planted around the bean teepees two weeks ago are now about 5 inches high.
The English pea patch is coming along nicely. Last year I had potatoes planted in this area and so far I have spotted 6 volunteer potato plants. As soon as the peas are ready to pick, I plan on planting a few varieties of heirloom squash in this area.
Now that the tomato starts are out of the greenhouse, there is plenty of room to walk around. I’m hoping the tomato plants will reach the ceiling by the end of summer. How cool would that be?
The strawberries I planted in gutters are doing really well. I spotted a few pink ones while I was taking photographs last night. Wahoo… homemade strawberry shortcake here we come!
Okay so not a whole lot to see in this photo, but the pumpkin patch has been planted. We should start to see the seeds sprouting in about a week or so.
I don’t think the raspberry patch is going to be as prolific this year as it was last year. I think I may have hacked away too many of the raspberry canes in the early spring. Eeek! Oh well, I’m sure there will be plenty of other fruits and veggies to pick.
And the potato towers… Looking good if you ask me. I am so excited to see how this works out. I wonder how many pounds of spuds we will get from each tower. 25? 50? Care to make a guess?
How’s it growing over in your garden?
Do you have all your seeds planted yet?

WONDERFUL ! Love the site and facebook page. We made two pallet gardens they are doing great . Being from Minnesota you can’t give rhubarb away everyone has it and it grows very well so I can even bring myself to pay for it in the stores. I have some growing hoping to make your Rhubarb Cinnamon jam. Thanks for your hard work.

You had so many raspberries last year from those plants, it’s probably okay that they take a break this year 🙂 I’m going to guess 35 lbs from each potato tower. Can’t wait to see those bean teepees as they grow – they already look great and they’ve just started… Love the pictures – my garden is living vicariously through you (although, I did try an heirloom tomato plant this year)

Awesome update!!! I’m doing battle with a little bean thief in my neck of the woods. They’ve stolen half my crop!!! Someone suggested I sprinkle some cayenne pepper around as a natural pest deterrent so we’ll see if that helps. Also, just an FYI, the next time my husband gripes about my 12 tomato plants, I’m sending him over to your blog for a reality check. Ha!!!
Great job, as always!

Does anyone know if the cayenne pepper works, I am having the same problem. Mr. Bean-lover is slowing my progress down. Or any othrr options? Not sure if it is a ground-hog or a skunk.

By the way Mavis, good job, your hard work and dedication sure shows.

I love the updates of your garden and especially the greenhouse. My hubby has offered to build one for me. I may see if he still want to do that. I can’t believe how big your plants are in there! I’m transplanting my heirloom tomatoes today! My guess is 40lbs on the tomato towers.

What kind of considerations went into choosing your greenhouse? There are so many types out there at different price points as well as the hoop house style. Just wondering if you had any thoughts on the decision making process?
AWESOME garden! I did plant 7 potato cages after seeing yours…also happy to see another “over-seeder”. I never follow the recommended spacing and can’t stand “thinning” (I feel it’s a little like choosing one child over another). Must now find a place and make some teepees!

I bought a glass green house because I really liked the way it looked. 🙂 Before I had a glass greenhouse I used pop up greenhouses by flower house. I thought they worked very well. I didn’t buy a hoop house because I didn’t want to have to deal with re-doing the plastic every few years. But, I have a few friend who own hoop houses and LOVE them. 🙂

They all look great! I’m going to plant some potatoe towers as well and I’m trying sweet potatoe’s this year as well. I’m in Northern CA and I’m starting my slips this week. It seems pretty easy! I found this on Pinterest http://pinterest.com/pin/145874475400826409/ and it has some good info on it. We will see 🙂
Are you going to steak or cage the tomato plants?

Off topic, I found at Albertsons yesterday cardboard display with MCP Pectin and Sure-Jell with coupons for free sugar up to $2.00 when you buy 2 boxes. WINCO always runs them really cheap for the summer months and you can get sugar cheap there too. My store had the cardboard display over closer to the produce than the canning aisle. Hope you find them.

Thanks Helen, I’ll be on the lookout for that coupon. 🙂

Love you teepees and your beans look very healthy!! My snow peas start getting yellow from the bottom and probably start dying soon. Does anyone know why?
