Old Fashioned Strawberry Ice Cream
With all the free strawberries I’ve been able to salvage lately, I’m starting to get a little worried I may run out of ideas on how to use them. I mean, once I fill the freezer is full with enough free strawberries to keep us in smoothie heaven for the next 9 months… Then what?
In the last 24 hours I have made strawberry shortcake, strawberry syrup, and now, old fashioned strawberry ice cream. Holy canolies Batman. Who knew free fruit could cause this much anxiety?
Well, the good news is, this recipe for old fashioned strawberry ice cream rocks. It does in fact taste like Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream you’d be happy to know. But be careful. If you had plans of keeping the entire batch for yourself and not sharing… All 6 servings combined will put you back 2,844 calories.
There’s a happy thought.
Keep calm and churn on!

OH MY GOODNESS. This looks delicious. I need to invest in a ice cream maker. Any suggestions on which one?

If you have a Kitchen Aid Mixer I’d buy the KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment. If not, get the Cuisinart ICE Pure Indulgence. 🙂
The hand crank one is cool too. But if you don’t want to be sitting outside hand-cranking ice cream in December, than I’d go with one of the others. 🙂

Thanks for the input. I’m not part of the cool club so no Kitchen Aid but I can certainly do the Cuisinart one. Do you have an Amazon link I can use so you can get credit for helping me?
Mavis says
You can click on the link in the post. 🙂 Have fun with you new Ice cream maker! 🙂

Haha. I’m so lame. Totally missed that. I guess I got too excited. I was visualizing banana frozen custard. Mmmmm,Mmmmm, good. I wish we had a Sheridan’s here. Their frozen custard is yum yum good. Thanks, Mavis.

I have the KitchenAid ice cream attachment and I have not been very successful at making ice cream with it. It never seems to even get to soft serve stage and when I dump it out and freeze it in another container it always seems icy or something. Any idea what I am doing wrong?
Mavis says
Really? Krista how long do you freeze your kitchen aid ice cream bowl for before you make a batch of ice cream?
Krista says
I leave it in the freezer all the time so when I want to make ice cream, it’s ready to go. I just wonder if maybe I have a bum bowl because everyone else seems to have good luck with it. I put a Cuisinart one on my wish list, so maybe I’ll have better luck with that. I would love to be able to make fresh ice cream for my kids as both of them are ice cream fiends.
Mavis says
Hmm. Well than maybe you did get a stinker. I leave mine in the freezer all the time too and have never had a problem.

It might sound strange, but one of my favorite ways to eat strawberries is dipped in a little bit of sour cream and then dipped in brown sugar. The tang and slight crunch is yummy!

My husband doesn’t know it yet, but i’ve decided he & the kids are getting me the Kitchenaid ice cream attachment for mother’s day 🙂

I’m sure you will love it!

OMGoodness, your recipe sounds delicious!
I improvised this summer and adapted my plain old vanilla ice cream recipe (came with my kitchenaid) to make strawberry. NO EGGS 🙂 It’s way simpler and doesn’t take as many strawberries. Sometimes you just need to use up the last few berries. Here is what I did~
3/4c whole milk
2/3c granulated sugar
Mix until sugar dissolves
Add:
1 & 1/2 c heavy cream
1 to 2 tbsp strawberry freezer jam
Put into ice cream maker, mix until only about 5 minutes of mixing remains then add about 10 chopped up strawberries to the ice cream maker.
Easy Peasy…Yummy. My family won’t eat any other kind of Strawberry ice cream. They have been spoiled for life.
Mavis says
You added jam into ice cream? Great idea. I’m going to try it. Thanks Heidi.
Heidi says
It happen by accident. I was making freezer jam and you know that little bit thats left over in the bottom of the bowl that won’t fit into a jar but you don’t want to waste it? Well, I happened to be making a batch of vanilla ice cream at the time and waa laa. In went the freezer jam and a new family favorite was born. Try it, you’ll like it. I haven’t tried any other berry jam flavored ice cream. Everything in time:)

Raw eggs? I don’t think I can trust commercially produced raw eggs in anything anymore. I had the KitchenAid freezer bowl and returned it because it takes up too much space in our freezer. I opted for the Cuisinart 1 quart model and I love it. There are only 2 of us at home now, so that’s enough to last us for a good while. I’d love to try this, but I think I will cook a custard base with eggs. I never buy ice cream anymore. It’s terrible after you make home made, which spoils you for anything else!

Hey, Barbara-
Google info on pasteurizing eggs at home. I’ve read that it can be rather simple and might give you some peace of mind if you wanted to try this recipe.

I wonder if I could use Splenda instead of sugar to make this more diabetic friendly? I’d love to try it. Thanks
