10 days ago I planted 2 seed trays with beet, broccoli, artichoke, cauliflower, bok choy, kale, and lettuce seeds. The plan is, after I clean up the garden a bit, I am going to plant the young seedlings in a few of the raised garden beds for a late fall harvest.
I’m not too enthusiastic about having to rip out Brussels Sprouts that went to seed, or the pulling up the remaining carrots this afternoon and trying to figure out what to do with them, but I need to get a move on.
I need to get a few more crops into the ground if I’m going to be able to reach my goal of growing 2,000 pounds of veggies this year.
If all goes well, hopefully later this afternoon I’ll be planting these Patty Pan Squash starts in one of the old carrot beds.
And the red acre cabbage?
I already planted 10 starts down the center of the former English pea bed.
Yep, it’s all work and no play around here. Sheesh. It might just be time for a vacation.
Have YOU started thinking about your fall garden yet?
Peach Out, I’m off to play in the dirt.

Did a lot yesterday before the heat advisories hit today. (Realfeel = 107!) Dear daughter brought in the garlic my son planted in November. Pulled the bok choy & lettuce that had gone to seed. Put in a row of spinach and a row of iceberg lettuce. The garlic bed was amended and seeded with bush beans. Not sure what I’m doing, but according to the books I have, PA should have another 70-80 growing days left.

I don’t know how you guys survive the heat. I would totally melt.

Winter radishes, peas, & a 2nd round of green beans go in tomorrow. I did a 2nd round of carrots about a month ago and those will not be pulled for awhile yet. I only do 1 huge broccoli planting in the spring and pull the side shoots over the course of the summer. We easily end up with enough to get us through until spring. As for winter produce, I only grow a little bit; we’re really lucky – the rest of our root-cellar storage and such we get through a winter CSA share our health insurance gives us.
Mavis says
Your health insurance gives you a CSA share? Holy cow that is cool.

The fall garden feels tricky tha year amidst the drought and record heat (103+ for too many weeks in a row) not sure when I’ll plant.

I checked out the Patty Pan link…That looks cool, I might have to try that next year. Did you get the “old-fashion recipe” on the inside of the packet?!

I’ll be planting more beets, those are delicious, and a few more peas. they’ll have to wait a week till family reunion is over though. Hopefully I’ll come back and my garden will be huge… if only.

I have never grown anything, but I want to start. Is there anything that can be planted this late in the season?
Mavis says
Michele, what state do you live in?
