School is right around the corner so I figured now was as good a time as any to load the freezers with bread.
About 25% of the stock in the store $1.00. Everything else is about half of retail. And since I was planning on freezing everything we purchased, it didn’t matter to me if the expiration date on the bread was only 2 or 3 days away.
I handed the kids each a voucher for $10, worth and let them pick out whatever they wanted {as long as it was only $1.00}. Monkey Boy choose 8 loaves of white {barf} bread and 2 boxes of doughnuts.
The Girl Who Thinks She’s A Bird choose 9 bags of bagels and 1 package of English Muffins.
Jeeezzz, you’d think white bread and bagels were like gold in my house {actually they are}. I thought it was hilarious they each decided to stock up on their favorite thing.
I however was very diplomatic. I choose 6 large bags of whole wheat bread {for the family} 8 packages of Thomas English muffins {these were bulk packages and there are more hiding behind the ones you see} and 1 package of stupid Crustini rolls {I think it’s just a fancy way of saying hamburger buns}.
If I was stocking up for myself, I would have chosen 10 boxes of delicious chocolate covered doughnuts and hid them in the back of my closet {but moms don’t get to do stuff like that}.
I seriously cannot believe there wasn’t a line out the door for this store. $1.00 loaves of bread? C’mon. Does it get any better than that?
This is shaping up to be a great week for my grocery budget. All I’ve spent so far this week is $.84 tax on some paper towels. Wahoooo! I love saving money.
How are YOU doing on your grocery budget this week?
Are you over, or under so far?

The Franz outlet right around the corner from my house in Bothell takes 6 Box Tops for a bag of English Muffins 😉 I’d say I have about 300+ box tops 😉

Oh and I went WAY over but won’t need any meat, school lunch snacks (besides fruits/veggies) or breakfasts (besides milk and eggs) for at least 3-4 months 🙂

Bread goes on sale for $1 a loaf at my fred meyer. And Grocery Outlet has bread for $1 a loaf everyday. The outlet (I don’t remember whose it belongs to) is a rip off compared to those.

Our bakery outlet just closed, so BUMMED! We would get bread that expired that day or the day before for .25!!

Will definitely need to look into nearby outlets — our family of 8 can go through some bread! I tried baking it at home for a while, which was definitely cheaper because we buy flour from a local bulk food store, but it can also be time-consuming — and annoying if someone uses the last of it and forgets to mention it! On a positive note, hubby was driving around and happened upon a little farmer’s stand and bought me 1/2 bushel of tomatoes that were marked as seconds but look amazing for $3, and a bag of peppers for $0.50. I’ll be canning salsa, yahoo!!! I am so grateful to have found your site — it’s been really inspiring. I am going to start officially keeping track of the money we spend on 9/01.

I love our outlet, I think we have Sara Lee and Orowheat at ours. They also give you a free loaf for every $10 you spend. I only go 3 or 4 times a year, but it is truly a money saver. We also have a Lofthouse cookie outlet that is AWESOME!!!!!! Those freeze well too.

O.K.,……first of all….what is wrong with buying a secret stash of “Mommy Stuff” and hiding it? I do this ALL the time. I look at it this way…who ALWAYS gets the last slice of pie? Child. Last cookie? Again, child. Hey! A mom has gotta do what a mom’s gotta do!!
Second…I have a great bread recipe that makes the best whole wheat bread ever and in one shot you can get about 5-7 loaves and freeze some at less than a dollar a loaf.

We don’t like store bread. I grew up on homemade bread, so that is what I continue to do. And if the bread runs out, so what. Lunches can be improvised for a day. I usually bake the bread when I get home from work. Easy enough to just get the Kitchenaid going while I am doing dinner. So we are usually getting our fresh bread about 9p, just enough for everyone to eat the first loaf hot out of the oven. Sometimes I turn one of the loaves into sweet rolls or pecan sticky buns or monkey bread or breadsticks.
Chris, do you share your whole wheat bread recipe?
chris says
Yes! First of all I grind my own wheat berries. After I have 8 cups (I sometimes cut the recipe in half) fresh ground wheat I add 6 cups warm water and 7tablespoons Braggs Raw Apple Cider Vinegar. Let this sit covered in a cool dark place for 12-24 hours. Can do 7 hrs if time is on a crunch…but no less. When done soaking drain off any left-over liquid. Next you add 2tbl of active dry yeast, 2tbl of sea salt, 2/3 cup oil and 2/3 cup honey. Mix and start adding organic white flour until your dough is the right consistancy. Let rise twice and bake. This should yeild you 4-7 loaves depending on the sixe of your pans. Good luck!

Interesting. But, is it the ground flour that is being soaked or the wheatberries before grinding. Not sure I am understanding. I have never soaked flour before expect to make seitan.
chris says
The ground flour is soaking.

We love our outlet too! The kids like it because they always get free cookies at the checkout; I like it for the $1 loaves and the free item after my punch card is filled.
Tali says
Our Franz bakery is closed Sundays so they discount everything even more on Saturday!

I love our outlet! baught my $10 voucher for $5 so the $1 loaves are really 50C. Plus once my punch card is full we get a $1 item free! and they always have something marked at 75 or 50 cents each. I once hit the motherload as the marked all the $1 items half off as I walked in.

DO you have Aldi’s around you? They sell bread (white) .79/
Mavis says
I don’t. I wish I did though, I have heard they have really low prices.
