For as long as I can remember, I’ve been growing Tri-Star strawberries in our various backyards over the years. Tri-Star strawberries are da’ bomb when it comes to producing tons and tons of juicy strawberries for eating fresh in homemade jams, strawberry bruschetta, and in desserts.
This morning I went out to the garden to see what I could find, and this is what I can back with {1 pound 12 oz}. Wowza! Here we are, almost the end of September, and the Tri-Star berries are still going strong. Pretty stinkin’ awesome if you ask em.
The last few times I have ordered my strawberries crowns from a company called Rain Tree Nursery. I also ordered my blueberry plants from them a few years ago and was very pleased with how everything arrived on time and in excellent condition.
Typically if I am buying new strawberry crowns, I will prepare a garden bed and plant them in the spring, usually around mid March {here is a quick tutorial}. However my strawberries did so great this year, and have produced so many runners, I think I’ll have to add “transplant more strawberries” to my list of fall chores so I can keep my garden looking in tip top shape.
I know I definitely want to move the strawberries I planted in the greenhouse gutters to an outdoor location as well. I’d like to try and grow some lettuce in there this winter, as I’m pretty sure the strawberries won’t produce any fruit for me this winter.
I think we all have our favorite varieties when it comes to growing fruits and vegetables, and Tri-Star strawberries are definitely mine.
What about YOU?
Do you have a favorite variety of strawberries? Or do you buy them at Costco?
Peace Out Girl Scouts, I’m off to play in the dirt.

I am in awe of your strawberries – I gave up the fight at least a month ago … Between the slugs and the chickens I just couldn’t nab any for myself.
Keep up the fantastic work Mavis!

I am a tad bit embarrassed to admit this, but I am a Costco gal for sure! (Or when someone is running a great sale…!) I have a serious black thumb and tried strawberries earlier in Spring and I only “grew” a handful of berries. We travelled a lot this summer and I know they weren’t kept watered enough…will try again next year! BTW, I would so barter you for some strawberries for blackberries any day 🙂

Where is the best place to plant the strawberries?
My husband and I were looking around and figured we were changing a flower bed into a berry garden…. raspberries and blueberries. Think some strawberries would get along there in the front? Which blueberries do you have?
Good sun almost all day.
Just a crazy thought to add to the berry patch… and 20% more free is always nice!

Mavis, how far apart did you plant your strawberries? I am ordering some and everything I read is different. I would love to know what works for you. Thanks!

I plant mine about 6 inches. But I think 12 inches is more normal because of the runners.

Mavis, big THANK YOU for all your posts. I live in the seattle area and you are my go to site with gardening questions, its so lovely to have someone in my area to model my garden after. This year I want to add strawberry plants to my garden; any guideline on how much they produce per plant? I’m ordering tristars. Thanks in advance!

Help! We have a bed of strawberries and between pincer bugs and slugs, we get little berries without damage. Is it better to hang baskets? It is frustrating
