The last two weeks the quantity of the “good” chicken scraps has been decreasing. Which is a good thing for the stores, because they are tossing out less produce. But on the other hand, it’s kind of a bummer for my family as well. We are not seeing boxes and boxes filled with boatloads of castoff goods anymore.
So what does this mean?
Is the store buying less produce and throwing less of it away? Do stores sell more fruits and vegetables in the summer months? Is that why there was such an abundance of free fruit and vegetables this summer, but not this fall?
Well one things for sure, the chickens are still getting their fill of fresh fruits and vegetables.
And they don’t seem to care if it’s in season or not.
So what do you think? Do the stores waste less in the fall and winter because the demand for fresh {real} food is less? Or am I just imagining it?

I think you are right.
My store, I think, purchases as little as possible so they have little waste. They sold off the last of their pumpkins around 5:30 p.m. last night. I wonder if they will get anymore in. There are a couple fields by the freeway that are still packed with pumpkins, and I’m pretty sure the grocer buys from that field. But we didn’t have to buy any, cause we grew all our own this year!
I noticed that with the change in weather, we want heartier and heavier foods. I’m guessing that is part of the issue.

Those heads of iceburg lettuce work really well as chicken pinatas as well (just like the cabbage)!
I just read a really depressing book about the amount of food we waste: Wasteland. You are certainly doing your part…but based on the book you are only getting a tiny portion of what the store tosses everyday.

I finally got up the courage to ask for scraps at my local store – and found out they used to give it away but then people were bringing in vet bills of animals that got sick eating some of the rotten food, and others were taking produce from the shelves and putting it in the scrap boxes so the store stopped giving it away.
But, while they used to grind it up and release it into the sewer or something, they are now sending it off to be composted so YAY for that.
I have other stores I could ask, but they are further from me and if pick-ups would be on weekdays instead of weekends, they are too difficult to get to. Maybe I’ll get the courage up to ask though…
