I think it’s kind of funny how our backyard garden has sprung to life again with all the cold weather we have been having. The garden boxes are full of green goodness and are chugging right along.
The latest vegetables to emerge are cauliflower and winter beets. I’m still not sure if we will be eating homegrown beets this Thanksgiving, but some cauliflower hummus will be on the menu, that’s for sure.
Here are a few pictures of the vegetables currently growing within the backyard garden boxes.
Pretty stinkin’ awesome for November if you ask me.
So even though the beans and squash are long gone…
and the potatoes have all been harvested,
There is still plenty of kale, Swiss chard, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage to eat. And with a bit of luck we’ll have Brussels sprouts, beets and carrots to harvest here pretty soon as well.
Life is good.

The only things I have left are lettuce, arugula, turnips and swiss chard. I had some peas, but they looked a little weird so I’m not sure if they are edible. I’m hoping my lettuce will keep growing with the protective cover I have over it, we’ll just have to see.

I have lettuce growing in a pot on the porch and peas in the greenhouse. Good luck with your lettuce, keep me updated, I’d like to know how long it lasts outside.

I have nothing growing my beds are empty . Did you start your winter plants from seeds ? Cause finding starts is hard . I feel bad that I’m growing nothing . What’s the easiest winter veggie to grow ?
Mavis says
Yes. I started them from seed.

What is growing in your containers?
Mavis says
KALE. 😉

In the garden, I have kale and somehow my tomatos are still producing some here and there.
I hope to be growing some most of my starts myself this year. I have mapped out my yard, and will have at least twice the vegetable garden as last year. I have taken up many *showy plants and will replace them with edible plants. And whats even more exciting than next year’s garden.. is the garden I will have in 2014.
Thank you so much for all the inspiration.

I am so inspired by your site and gardening success! I’ve never really grown food, but I’m already planning for Spring! I am wondering what single resource (book) you would recommend for a total newbie? I’ve heard Sqaure Foot Gardening is good, along with many others…I’m a little overwhelmed with all the choices and thought you would be the perfect person to ask!

Brussels sprouts (not sure if they will get big enough) beets, chard, carrots, spinach.
Will finish constructing my unheated green house today. May even get to planting seeds since we are supposed to get snow dumped on us tomorrow. I’m shooting for cauliflower, cabbage, chard, and other leaf types.
Sarah says
Carrots and broccoli.

My two bell pepper plants are actually still producing and I have a few volunteer tomato plants. We’ll see if they do anything. It’s been pretty warm here in So Cal lately, but rainy today and in the 60s for a bit. Supposed to warm up to the mid 70s again soon.

I have to say but I am really glad my garden is always over by late September-early October. Days are short, too cold, by the time I would get home from work at night and too dark. Dark now at 5pm when we leave work. 4 seasons here. Already had a tidge of snow that did not amount to anything.

We have had snow here since Oct. 20th – Wow i wish we had a longer growing season.

I have various lettuces in the hoop house. Just picked 3 head of cabbage yesterday. I still have some broccoli, kale, carrots, onions, and kohlrabi out in the garden bed. We have had a couple hard frosts and a good freeze but these things are still good enough to eat. My chickens will eat anything green I leave out even in deep winter. I just pick it frozen and feed it to them.
