I headed out to the garden this afternoon with one thing on my mind. Bulbs. After the shopping spree at Lowe’s yesterday, I knew I had my work cut out for me.
I didn’t exactly have a plan, so at first I planted a bunch of daffodil and tulip clusters near some of our old tree stumps. Whoop T Do, right? But I think once I have then entire garden planted, the flowers will fit in and look natural.
As I was carrying the empty bulb bags to the garbage, I noticed Jersey {the not so giant chicken} pacing back and forth near the cedar tree. It was weird, like she was trying to tell me something. So I started to look around, and then it hit me.
Ding, Ding, Ding.
Holy Crap! When I was finished, I counted the bulbs {bags} I used.
- 200 Daffodil bulbs
- 174 Tulips bulbs
- 150 Dutch Irish bulbs
I think I’m going to need more bulbs! Ha Ha Ha.
How about YOU? Did you do anything wild and crazy today?
Peace Out Girl Scouts. I need to take an ibuprofen. My back hurts. LOL.

Holy bulbs! I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many! You’re posting a picture in the spring right?!
Mavis says
Oh course I will. 🙂

I planted crocus & daffodils this year– the squirrels promptly dug up and ate all the crocus! They don’t seem to like daffs, though. Thank goodness.
Mavis says
Eeeek! I didn’t think about critters. Fingers crossed.

Bulbs, maybe, but I think you’re gonna need more dirt!!!
Honestly, your yard is going to look so very beautiful.

This is going to look amazing in the Spring, Have you though of making a fairy grotto in that old tree stump, so many ideas on Pinterest. My sister has just made one under her reading room window, but she is fairy crazy, I might add she is fifty three years old lol
Mavis says
Ohhhhh, what a fantastic idea!.

Wow. That is a lot of bulbs. I’ve never planted them before so I am excited to see your results. It’s pretty stinking cold up here in New England so I think I probably have missed any planting opportunities for this year. If the bulbs/flowers come up well I can think of a number of places in my minimally landscaped yard that could be brightened by a bunch of lovely flowers. Buying them on steep discount is genius. If you weren’t able to plant them now, would the bulbs have lasted until next fall? Or would they be goners?

we have planted bulbs on New Years day successfully. As long as the ground is not frozen. Heading off to Lowe’s today. Snow storm stopped me from going yesterday. Fingers crossed we have the same sale.

You still have a lot to plant. They are going to be stunning. Since you are in zone 8, does the ground freeze? We have pretty much run out of time for planting here in Mi. I am going to check out the stores to see if there are any bulbs left. I can always put them in the freezer till spring. Looking forward to your pics in the spring.

309 bulbs to plant. Gee, that is not so much, concidering you started with almost 4 X that. Squirrels were mentioned. I suggest some chicken wire layed across the top and secured with dirt and maybe stakes. I knew someone who planted 75 tall oriental lilys, and had only 6 sprouted after the squirrels had stocked up.

Free Range Deer – do they root around for bulbs? Or nibble tender shoots in spring? Just asking.
Mavis says
I planted all these in the fenced backyard. 🙂 I have daffodils planted in the front yard and they have never bothered them {luckily}.
Desi says
wow, mavis that will be beautiful

Daffodils are toxic to most creatures- that’s why they don’t do well in vases with other flowers and also why animals avoid them. I love bulbs, and i can’t wait for the pictures!

Just stocked up at the Lowes in Everett! My cashier already had her ‘stash’ behind her register! LOL!
Thanks for the tip!

How do you deal with all the messy foliage after the spring bloom? When I try to plant bulbs where I dont have plants that flower to cover the dying leaves it makes me crazy!
