Yesterday the Handsome Husband had 15 yards of dirt delivered for Valentine’s Day.
As I was walking to the backyard to grab the wheelbarrow I glanced over at the large raised garden bed we installed a few years ago, and decided it needed to be a little larger.
This was not in my original garden plan I made this winter, and at first I was only going to lengthen the bed. But one thing led to another, and I soon found myself kicking the logs away and shoveling up the old bark.
Before I knew it I was moving the old bark over by the greenhouse. And then while I was unloading the bark, I got distracted yet again and decided to beef up the raised flower bed area with a few more loads of dirt.
Then it was back to moving bark again.
I’m hoping by the end of the day I’ll have this little {unexpected} project done. I’m going to try and connect the area where we had the bean teepees placed to the raised log garden bed area. Ultimately I think it would be cool to grow beans, corn and pumpkins there. We’ll see. I think it will work.
Wish me luck!

HH is a romantic fellow like my HH. Really. I am happiest when he gives me stuff I like to play with, like . . . pruning shears!

Funny you should try beans, corn and pumpkin in the same bed- just a few days back I was reading about this ‘Three Sisters’ arrangement one another website. Each one fertilises the other crops.
Here’s another article on it I found: http://www.reneesgarden.com/articles/3sisters.html

Okay- that source may seem a bit spiritual but if you wikipedia it, you can find out about the companion planting idea, and how that stuff all works.

How romantic! Hubby told me I could order an almond tree for V Day!

Mavis, how on earth do you keep the rabbits and deer out of your gardens without fences? They just wreck havoc in mine.

I told HH that I too wanted dirt, not roses for V day. Well I came home from work and he told me he couldn’t resist, he had to buy me roses. He led me outside to see two bare root rose plants! Ha! I guess I’ll keep him around another year. 🙂 happy shoveling all that dirt!

Ty:)) I showed my hubby what all you do and let him know I wanted to do some raised bed gardens and get some chicks… He said great and we went straight to co-op to get our babies ordered. Now I can call about getting some awesome dirt! You rock in my book.

You always manage to give me a little laugh, I think this must be the best valentines day gift ever. I have been picking tomatoes, beans, beetroots, silverbeet, capsicums, and cucumbers, boy have I been picking cucumbers I’m so surprised how many grow on two vines. My yard is only 50ft x 25ft and I’ve been able to grow enough for me to eat and make chutneys and relishes. The weather here in Melbourne is still very hot 35ctoday and looking at 37c over the next few days.
