This morning I went outside while Lucy was napping and planted my second batch of radish seeds between my 12 cabbage plants.
I planted my first batch of radish seeds about 2 weeks ago and this is what they looked like this morning. I’ll wait a few more days before they are all up before I start to thin the tiny little seedlings.
The peas are also up as well. Colleen from facebook was worried she planted her peas too early because they were taking awhile to break through the soil. I told her not to worry, sometimes peas can take up to 2 weeks before they decide to wake up.
Also, the spinach in the greenhouse gutters is also starting to peek through the soil as well.
Starting seeds in early Spring can be torture when you have to wait for them to sprout. The cooler temps mean longer germination times, but hang in there, don’t worry, your seeds will grow.
Are you waiting for any particular seeds to break through the soil right now?
If so, what? I’m anxiously awaiting for those Toy Bok Choy seeds to pop up.
Now go out there and have some fun.

Seed sprouting: soak hard shelled seeds such as peas, beans, in water for a day or two before planting. I put a bunch in a glass jar and sit it in the window. No lid. You have to stir it around every now and then since the seeds will swell as they soften. I also use an “inoculant”, a black powder containing rhizobia, which is a tiny bacteria legumes have naturally to help them take nitrogen from the air and convert it to fertilizer.
For a little more info on legumes, rhizobia, etc. check out this web site:

Nothing planted yet, outside, but lots in trays with ‘cells’ under lights. Big ones I am waiting for now are herb seeds to sprout!
I hope to get out and plant in the High Tunnels in the next week or so. Ground is not really warm enough yet but hope to get some radish, spinach and greens planted soon!

I have a terrible time being patient with my seeds in the spring. My fella says I stalk them. He’s right. I peek daily. 🙂

I’m having a hard time with okra. Even though it clearly says they take 12-14 days to germinate, about day 10 I’m feeling like a complete failure.

HANG IN THERE! It’s total torture, I know. 😉

it is way too early for okra and hot crops. the seed will rot before they come up depending on where u are. i am in texas and still can barely wait till i get them in the ground. if kept cut okra will make till it freezes. but does need water its not quite drought tolerant as we would hope. it will get tough if not watered a little especially in the dead heat of summer

I’m getting ready to plant. I do have a question; how can I keep small rodents out of them? Last year I lost a whole planter box of carrots to a rodent. It pulled EVERY SINGLE CARROT up and ate them!
Mavis says
Eeeek! Let me do some research on that.

Hey Mavis, how are your Lavender seeds/sprouts doing? I got my lavender seeds from Botanical Interests and planted them a while back. I know they take a while to germinate, but the first set never did break trhough the soil. I think my conditions are fine, as I have them watered, inside, and under a grow light. My tomato, broccoli, peppers, etc all came up fine…..but no lavender!! I’ve planted twice now. Ready to give up and just buy some plants here in a month….

Yes! I will try to include a picture of them this weekend. 8 sprouted and are about 2-3 inches tall.

I have had a lot of seedlings have their seeds get stuck on them as they grew. Everyone told me to leave them and they would come off, but just never did so I took it upon myself. My zucchini that got stuck had black, brittle tips when I took the seed off. Do I need to bury the seeds deeper to try to prevent this? Thanks!
Mavis says
Jennifer that happens to me every once in a while too. I don’t know what causes it but I will try and find out.
