I believe Gwen Stefani said it best:
This sh** is bananas B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
Oatmeal and caramelized bananas. Talk about the best freakin’ breakfast on the planet.
Ingredients
2 cups water
1 cup rolled oats
1 banana
2 teaspoons brown sugar
Directions
In saucepan bring 2 cups of water and stir in rolled oats. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for about 5 minutes, making sure to stir the oats occasionally. Remove the pan from the heat.
Peel banana, slice banana, place banana slices on top of the oatmeal. Carefully sprinkle brown sugar the over bananas with enough sugar to coat the top of the banana pieces. Using a kitchen torch, caramelize sugar by moving the flame continuously over the surface in a slow, circular motion. Serve warm.
Oh my word, I have to go back for another bowl.
This oatmeal rocks!

Your food is always innovative and looks sooo delicious. Do you have formal training? Or is it a natural talent? Either way, I am totally jealous.
Mavis says
Ha! No training. 🙂

Did you use your banana slicer (found on amazon) for this? 🙂
Looks really good. I will definitely be trying it!

I don’t have a kitchen torch, do you think I could run it under the broiler for a couple of seconds??
Mavis says
Yes!

Thanks for the inspiration–I made this today, and my 4-year-old ate a huge bowl. If you don’t have a kitchen torch, here’s an option from a Williams Sonoma recipe:
Melt 2 T. butter over medium heat; add 2 T. water and 2 T. sugar. Cook 4-5 minutes until browned (watch it; darker brown gets bitter). Add 2 sliced bananas and cook 1-2 minutes until they’ve released juices into the caramel.
You’ll miss out on the crunch of the torched sugar, but one could argue the butter compensates …

Awesome! I am so excited to try this! 🙂
I love using my kitchen torch! I always say, “Cooking is the grown-up version of playing with knives and fire… which is why I like it so much.” lol
