I think a can of WD-40 is sitting on every garage workbench I’ve ever been in. In fact, WD-40’s website claims there are over 2000 uses for the stuff. Huh, who knew?
Here’s 10 uncommon uses for WD-40 you might want to try:
- Use it to clean scuff marks, nail polish, paint and mascara off of tile floors. Works great for grout lines too.
- Spray a generous layer on the top of bird feeders to keep squirrels off. Supposedly, they slip right off. {Is is wrong that I am looking forward to testing this one?}
- Unstick gum from hair {and some carpets–though, check an inconspicuous area first}.
- Separate glassware that is stuck. Ever stack your glasses, only to find them stuck? Spray a little WD-40 around them and they should slip apart.
- Keep bugs at bay. Spray WD-40 on window sills, etc. to keep spiders and other bugs out. {Spray on cockroaches directly to kill them, if you live in an area where cockroaches are a problem.}
- Lube garden tools and shovels. This is particularly effective if you have a lot of clay in your soil–makes it much easier to work the soil.
- Clean rust off of garden tools.
- Remove rubber cement from just about any surface {Any teachers out there? Have you ever tried this one?}
- Remove stickers from just about anything.
- Remove crayon from walls and wallpaper.
What do YOU use WD-40 for?

My son drew on our cream colored chairs with non-washable crayon and WD-40 saved the day! WD-40 cleaned the crayon right off and left no stain at all.

My Grandpa taught me this one – put the red straw on and use it to kill a wasp nest!

You can use it to kill wasps if you don’t have bug spray. Works like a dream!!!!

We had an unfortunate SillyPutty-in-the-carpet incident one year. The SillyPutty just “melted” into the carpet…it was a nasty mess. Sprayed WD-40 on it and it came out easily.

OMG it kills cockroaches! I cannot WAIT to bring a can of it to school (stupid biology teachers & their pets! You think they would have learned when their mice, or chinchilla or snakes got loose, but NO!!!! Who has cockroaches as pets? Only insane people!)

Mavis, I’m trying for the darn squirrels too. I live in an apartment at the moment with a balcony. I had to get up 4 times this morning to try to shoo one off of the pots I would like to plant things in. At this point I would love to see one slip and slide around my balcony edging. I’m going to put it on the posts that go to the roof also. Please let us know if it works for your bird feeders.

Hi Mavis-
Your tip about keeping bugs out of windows is AWESOME! I have a window in my bathroom that always has had spiders in it. I kill them, clean out the webs, and within a day or 2 there is another spider and more webs. I’ve been dealing with this for a long time. After reading your tip I once again cleaned out the webs, killed the spider and then sprayed wd-40 around the window. That was 2 weeks ago and there has not been a single spider or any webs in that window.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Glad I could help Julie. 🙂

cleans stainless steel appliances – no streaks, no fingerprints!

I use WD40 to clean my stainless steel refrigerator and dishwasher. It leaves a great shine and prevents future hand prints from sticking! In a household of nine people, that’s huge.

WD40 is a great multi tasker, just like duct tape. Everyone should have a case, of each, in their possession , for any thing that might pop up.

I use WD-40 to remove oil base paint from my hands. Works as good as thinner and it will not dry your skin out. You can use it to remove grease and oil as well.
