Calling all neat freaks.
If you are worried about soil falling out of your flower pots when you water your plants, there is an easy solution. Simply line your flower pot with a coffee filter before you fill it with soil to stop it from falling through the drainage hole.

I reuse filters for making coffee until they fall apart and then once they fall apart, I use them as pot liners 🙂

Ever think of using a handful of gravel? Works real good for drainage.

I’m not a coffee drinker (although I sometimes do my java at the coffeeshop), so I don’t have filters laying around. I was thinking about putting a 2-inch layer of sticks on the bottom, hoping it will also help with drainage, and decrease on the amount of soil needed. Any thoughts? Although I suppose I could always hit the local Dollar Store for some filters, I’d love to find a “natural” solution

My coffeemaker uses the cone filters, so I buy the basket type specifically for lining pots. No more dirt collecting in the saucer under the pot.

Thanks, Marg. I’ll give that a shot 🙂

::facepalm:: Why didn’t I think of this! I’ve been throwing my used filters on the compost pile! Thanks for this tip…dirt coming out of the bottom of potted plants happens to be one of my many pet peeves. 🙂

I love this idea, and it makes perfect sense. I’d probably do it with the handful of gravel (like another commenter suggested. Seems even then the dirt finds a way out – the filter is the perfect solution!

Does anyone know how long it takes for the coffee filter to disintegrate in the pot?
