Well, my friend Jane and her family have finally done it.
The got bees! After a long talk with the Handsome Husband about it, I’ve decided not to get bees. Mostly because I am a total afraid of getting stung and then there’s that whole part about me being allergic to them, so I’ll just have to get my bee fix vicariously through Jane.
Who knows, maybe she’ll even send me some of her Virginia honey for Christmas if I’m lucky {wink, wink}.

I wish we could keep a hive of bees, but that just wouldn’t fly around here. So to get my bee fix I’ve started with some Mason bees. They are a great little bee and have so far kept my desire for a “real” hive at bay…
Last week I did get stung by a bumblebee….I think he came in with me after gardening all day. I was watering the seedlings under the grow lights when I felt this burning on my foot that just wouldn’t go away. I took my sock off and a bumblebee came out of my sock. Yup, I’ll stick to my friendly little Mason bees….

Nope. My parents had them when I was growing up, they were evil little buggers, very aggressive.

Yes, I do dream of bee keeping…Next house, I hope. My dad and brother both keep bees, and they share honey with us, and, oh my, is it wonderful. Also such a low-maintainence thing to do that gives such SWEET and amazing reward for the itty bit of labor involved. And FYI, they rarely get stung and they dont wear suits or masks or any of that. Too bad you are allergic, Mavis.

I also have Mason bees and love wathing them hatching out and then getting busy pollinating and then laying eggs for the next generation. Mavis, you should check out Crown Bees. They are in Woodinville. They have a really good website that tells you all about the native bees and why we need them. And they are very gentle

We call my HH Bill the Bee Man! He keeps Mason bees in our Community Gardens. They don’t sting but are very busy pollinating raspberries and our apple orchard right now. They are fun to watch in the garden but of course no honey.
