I just wanted to give you a heads up and let you know I’m taking the day off from the blog today.
To make a long story short, I left my house on Thursday June 27th, and I just got back in to town late last night. I was gone 9 days. I hung out in San Francisco with my garden buddy Harriet and toured gardens for a couple of days, then it was straight to Washington D.C. for a family vacation with the HH, Monkey Boy and The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird.
While I was away I took over 3,000 photos, drank copious amounts of tea, lost half my body weight in sweat {and gained it all back in sweets}. I packed a suitcase full of clothes and with the exception of one night in San Francisco when I wore a dress, I’ve been living in the same pair of shorts and alternating between 2 t-shirts for the last 9 days. Actually make that 10 days, because I didn’t even have the strength last night to change in to my pj’s before crawling in to bed.
I have laundry to do, milk to buy, a dog to pick up, neighbors to thank and a garden to inspect once I wipe the sleep from my eyes.
But first, I need some tea! 😉
I can’t wait to share all my photos and adventures with you. I hope you’ll come back tomorrow.

Having grown up and spent my first 30 years around Washington DC and moving to Seattle 17 years ago, I know what you are talking about with the sweat! DC is a nice place to visit (I still have family there) but I could never live there again!

Same here! I grew up in Massachusetts with the same humidity. Anything over 70 is too hot for me!! LOVE, love , LOVE the Pacific Northwest.
I have family in MA and I only visit in September/ October – to avoid the heat and enjoy the fall leaves.

Ditto except I do miss it!
You can carelessly throw a half eaten tomato aside and it will grow like a weed. I miss tomatoes so good you eat them whole as a snack!
I miss free museums (AC!) that serve buffalo burgers, the Capitol Hill khaki pants/light blue shirt “dress code” and fireflies.
I miss everything (except for the ticks.) Time to plan another trip!

Aren’t fireflies amazing?? 🙂 I haven’t thought about those in a long time!

Sounds wonderful…can’t wait to read all about it!

Everyone needs to take a day off every once in awhile! 🙂 Hey, Washington DC is where I am from! Hope you had a fabulous time.

What day were you at Mt. Vernon? We were just there on the 29th of June. It was blazin’ hot. We were in DC June 26th-July 2nd. Please tell me you took the time to visit the National Botanic Garden behind the Capitol building. I’m pretty sure it was the highlight of my trip.

Oh how odd! I can’t believe we were there around the same time. Yep, we went to the Botanic Garden too. 🙂

So glad you had a great time, and I’m glad you and yours are home safely! Rest up, Cupcake, your garden has missed you!

Mount Vernon. That place always makes for a great vacation!

Hi Mavis, So glad you had a wonderful vacation. Thank you for not leaving us high and dry. I would have gone bananas without my daily dose of “One Hundred Dollars a Month”. Looking forward to your pics and stories.

That’s Mount Vernon, a few miles from my house! I hope you enjoyed your trips. So much of what you write about is aspirational for me: the travel too. (Though I get to Mount Vernon All The Time with my four-year-old. He visits the sheep and I visit the orchard and artichokes.)

Hey Mavis,
I left my garden for 4 days this past wknd and could not believe how much it changed in that short amount of time (and how much I missed it!) =]
