Winco $16.54
Last week was kind of a weird grocery wise…. I didn’t need much and the HH and I were going out of town for the weekend so I only picked up a few things at Winco. This week I’ll be doing a “no spend week” so by the time next sunday rolls around I’ll probably need to stock up on few things.
Some of the prices I paid:
Asparagus $1.48 lb, Avocados $0.88, English cucumbers $0.78 each, Zucchini $0.78 lb, Green Beans $0.98 lb, Pears $0.98 lb. How do these prices compare with produce in your area?
Grocery Outlet. Do you have one in your town? I hadn’t been to one in several years so I thought I’d pop in and check out the deals after seeing a store on our road trip.
I found great deals on snacks throughout the store… Peanut butter pretzels for the boys {this size seemed more manageable than the giant tub from Costco} and Annie’s bunny grahams and crackers were all $0.99 a box.
And seasonal foods. There were a lot of them. I don’t normally buy cookie mixes but I know The Girl loves the Betty Crocker Gingerbread cookie mix so I tossed one in the cart for $0.50. Gingerbread Clif Bars for $0.59 each? Yes please!
Along with a lot of junk food and canned/boxed items there was some weird stuff too. Do you know anyone who eats Mackerel? Would it seriously taste good in a sandwich? Isn’t mackerel what they use for bait on The Deadliest Catch? And Batman cereal. What’s in that anyway?
Have you seen these before? Palm sized tortillas for “street tacos.” I thought they were cute! Although I didn’t buy them. After making homemade tortillas for so many years now I’m kind of a tortilla snob and prefer fresh, handmade ones.
I thought the cranapple juice was a good deal {105 ounces} but my favorite deal in the whole joint was the Ocean Spray Craisins for $0.50 a bag. At around $1.60 a pound that was a steal!
Grocery Outlet $26.68
Crasins $0.50 each, Clif Bars $0.59 each, Numi Tea $2.99, Gingerbread cookie mix $0.50, Peanut butter pretzels $1.99, Ginger Snaps $1.49, Kit’s Organic Peanut Butter Bars $12.00 {these are the HH’s favorite bar}.
Funny how those “side trips” can add up. 😉
Well, that’s it for me and my grocery budget this week, how about YOU? How did you do?

I’m in the UK so can’t help you with the Batman cereal but mackerel is delicious! Like big sardines, I guess. I have occasionally used tinned but mostly buy either fresh fish (yummy barbecued or grilled) or smoked fillets. These sometimes come peppered and either are really good as they are with salad or mashed with yoghurt and/or cream cheese to make pâté. I have to ration it or my kids would eat it by the spoonful… I would make the tinned mackerel into pate too, maybe with some lemon juice and some chopped fresh herbs (chives, parsley, coriander depending on what needs using). That would be good in a sandwich

Thanks Hazel I had no idea.

My husband is English and I love eating smoked mackerel fillets when we go to visit. I can’t find them here (at least not for any reasonable price) but I’d try canned mackerel to see if it even approaches the tastiness of smoked mackerel.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Grocery Outlet!! I have one not too far from my home. They have the best deals on cheese! There are some brands I’ve never heard of but lots of well-known brands too. A couple of week ago I got a 2.lb loaf of Tillamook Colby for 3.99, You can get a 6inch delicious brie for 1.99 so many other to choose from too. Right now I’m working my way through a pound of caraway cheddar that is wonderful melted on a ham sandwich! Never know what you’ll find at G.O.

That size of tortilla is very common here in central CA. It is definitely the size used by taco trucks, stacked two deep for each taco. Taco trucks are super common around here, as are taquerias. Hazel is making me want to go out and find some mackerel now!

Years ago in another city I shopped at Grocery Outlet not for food, but picture frames, knickknacks, etc. at great prices. I’ve shopped In 5 or 6 different stores throughout the years and rarely find bargains. Mostly old food and higher prices than the regular grocery store. Great finds Mavis!

I just looked up and there are no Grocery Outlets in my area. There are similar types of stores though. I do visit one occasionally. I can regularly get a quart of yogurt (even grassfed, organic) for $.50. It is frozen, so I stick it in my freezer and then thaw as needed. The consistency isn’t good for eating, but it works well for smoothies.
I feel like the oils in crackers (like the Annie’s brand) get rancid the longer they sit. So they might still be within the use by date but you open the package and it smells rancid. I have a sensitive nose though, so maybe it’s just me. 😉 But I usually skip the crackers in places like Grocery Outlet.

I have sometimes wondered why you never shop at Groc Out. It’s one of my regular stops- I buy chicken for my dog, Saabra humus for half the price of Winco, produce, eggs, cheese, the occasional miscellaneous items (Like I recently stocked up on “EPIC” brand jerky for 75% off. It’s also a good place for hydrogen peroxide, toilets, and of course people rave about their wine prices.
There is a store in Ohio that is similar but I think better- it’s so much bigger!

toiletries, that is.

Just out of curiosity, what was the expiration date on the Craisins? I know, I know, expiration dates don’t really mean much, but, I find the things that are a really good deal at Grocery Outlet are always expired or very near expiration and sometimes it takes me a while to use things up.
Sandra says
I picked up the Craisins at the Grocery Outlet. The expire dates are November 2017. The packaging indicates these were packaged for export.

We have a Grocery Outlet here in town and there are definitely more snack and dessert type foods. I have to be careful otherwise I end up buying too many snacks. But like TJD said, they do have great deals on cheese. I also find pretty good deals on fancy branded yougurts, Odwala/Naked smoothies, condiments, and clothes detergents.

I love the Grocery Outlet! I wander in occasionally to see what they have and don’t always buy something. Two of us are gluten and dairy free so those are the things I’m usually looking for and it’s hit and miss. Last week I found dairy free coconut yogurt 2/$1, normally about$2 each. I made sure to only buy what would be eaten before it went too much past date. Every trip is a new adventure.

Grocery Outlet seems to have great deals on stuff I shouldn’t eat. 🙁
I rarely stop in anymore.

I shop at Outlet at least once a month. You so have to check expiration dates, but there are great deals. Ours will carry stuff that Costco carries too. Costco gets rid of certain things when the pallet gets low due to space…so great deals to be found. BTW… I bought the Batman cereal just for fun & mixed it in my Rice Krispie treats! Hilarious!

I like our Grocery Outlet here in Bonney Lake, Wa. I have shopped there for years and only had to bring one thing back. And yes I am picky and careful. Clean organized store. Very friendly people working there. Have saved a lot of money shopping there. If you are a senior, shop on Tuesday morning and get a 10% discount.
Connie Northrup says
Do you know what the age is for the Senior discount?

My Mom used canned mackerel so I use it too, same as salmon. It makes great patties. I mash it and toss in whatever I have handy, chopped onion, a little mayo or an egg, cracker or bread crumbs or potato flakes, any other leftover cooked or chopped raw veggies such as broccoli or peas, salt and pepper, or lemon pepper, a dash of Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce. Saute in a little OO plus butter. Yum! You could dredge the patties in crumbs before frying or dip in beaten egg then crumbs. It could be baked like a loaf as well. I rarely buy fresh fish because it’s usually pretty expensive for my budget, but I don’t know why mackerel wouldn’t be just as good as some of the others. It seems to me that a lot of our food preferences are based on perception more than experience, so it’s nice to be adventurous from time to time.

I love Grocery Outlet! I went today and also bought the Craisins, BOGO salad/spinach, BOGO small tomatoes, bag of apples, bag of yellow potatoes, bag of Halo oranges, etc. This was my main shopping trip, but I do need to make a quick stop at another store to get baby carrots, salsa and celery tomorrow since Grocery Outlet didn’t have any.
