Well, it was another crazy week in the food department at our house. After all that food I ate the previous week with Mrs. HB I was trying to cut back on portions and make heather choices. I also tried to make sure all of Lucy’s snacks last week were vegetables knowing the HH gave her a bunch of chewy sticks and alligators while I was away. Well, my plan worked for a few days.
Until one morning I caught Lucy snacking on a roll of toilet paper.
Eat, sleep, get into a little mischief. She sure does live the good life. 😉
Winco $37.70
I was over in the Tacoma area last week so I stocked up on fruits, veggies and Greek Gods yogurt. The meatballs were a splurge item for the HH and Monkey Boy. I made pasta a few weeks ago and they were complaining the pasta I served was boring without meatballs and so I grabbed the 40 ounce pack for $5.98. The Girl has gone vegetarian again and I don’t mind eating pasta with just marinara sauce so the way I see it, at 2 {big} meatballs each, the package will last 4 pasta dinners at our house.
Maybe I’m weird, but I think about things like that {portion size} when I’m buying groceries. It’s not being cheap, it’s thinking ahead and trying to get the most for your dollar.
Prices I paid for the fruits and veggies:
English cucumbers $0.79, Pears $0.98 lb, Mango $0.78, Bananas $0.52 lb, Onion, $0.42 lb, Broccoli $1.28 lb, gala apples $0.98 lb, red delicious apples, $0.88, avocados $0.88 each, asparagus $2.98 lb, and the Greek Gods yogurt was $2.64 each.
Albertsons $7.08
Albertsons had some great buys this week: Canned vegetables @ $0.39 with coupon, 1 dozen Large eggs $.77 with a coupon and tomatoes $0.69 lb. I was also able to get a $0.25 any item rebate on the iBotta app to save a few pennies more. 😉
Fred Meyer $5.78
Yesterday the HH was walking around in circles and I could tell he wanted to get out of the house so I sent him to the grocery store for a few items. And much to my surprise… he stuck to the list! 🙂 Way to go HH!!!
As far as the food we ate last week it was pretty simple. I mostly ate big salads…
And ate leftovers out of the fridge.
Oh, and then there was that 36 hour period where I stuffed my face with sugary goodness {more on that in my next post}.
As for the boys, I fed them things like oatmeal, scrambled eggs and potatoes and pots of yogurt for breakfast. The girl does her own thing {but mostly eats oatmeal for breakfast}.
Lunches consisted of sandwiches, homemade cookies and fruit while for dinner I served pasta, pizza bread, and various things cooked from the grill. It was a pretty relaxed week and it definitely feels like summer is here.
Oh, and I almost forgot. The Girl and I also checked our blood pressure while we were at the grocery store. Do you do this? You totally should because it’s free and if you’re already there so why not, right? Anywho, I’m happy to report that The Girl and I are both in the normal rage. 😉
How about YOU? Did you find any deals at the stores this week? Do you feel like you are buying more fruits and vegetables now that summer is here? Have a great Monday,
~Mavis

Yesterday my daughter and I went to Fred Meyer and bought fresh veggies and fruit- melon, blueberries, apples, a few oranges, avocados, a couple of onion, cucumbers, broccoli, celery, baby carrots, potatoes and a package of 3 red bell peppers from the reduced area ($1 for all 3)- then I came home and cleaned the yucky stuff from my fruit and veggie drawers so now we have started anew. Am I the only one who does this? I buy new fruits and veggies and waste lots of what I buy and it makes me so mad at myself!
Here in Boise we just got composting bins delivered so I put all of my shame in my new bin and that felt better than throwing it in the trash can but still…I need to get much better about using what I buy…

For some reason, here in NC our Aldi’s store has had eggs for 47¢ a dozen since before Easter. We love fried egg sandwiches at our house, so I buy 4 dozen a week. I also like migas, both with and without meat in it.
If I find that they are getting close to the sell-by date, I make a huge batch of deviled eggs.
This has been a great way to stretch my already tight grocery budget.

Ok I’m sorry but I just instantly got mad at how much I’ve been paying for Avocados. I live in freaking California and I’m paying – well I refused to pay – $2.99 EACH per avocado at Safeway, a whopping .50 cheaper at Luckys at $2.50 and they weren’t even big ones! I went to the flea market the other day and the cheapest ones I found there were $1.25 each. I am seriously outraged!
Mavis Butterfield says
Isn’t that crazy? Why do you think they are more expensive in California? That so weird.
Danielle Diakoff-King says
I don’t know. Maybe the explosion of popularity of ‘avo toast’? which I’ve never tried, they became super popular and all those weight loss articles… But jeeze you’d think they were gold. And it just irks me that our prices are waaay higher when they’re grown right here. >:/

Safeway has the same sale going on w/ the eggs and beans, probably because they are the same co. ;), but then you can double dip w/ the sales. 🙂
