Where to start? At the beginning of last week I guess…. Here goes.
Last week we celebrated the HH’s birthday and just like she’s done for the past 15 years, The Girl made her dad his favorite cake. She bought all the ingredients and prepared it the night before {the cake has pudding between the layers so it’s best the day after it’s made} but none of us could wait and so we ended up breaking into it a little early. Yes, it’s that good!!! 😉 I think we even forgot to sing Happy Birthday to the HH in all the excitement.
Last weeks meals at home mostly consisted of bbq thanks to the birthday box from Omaha steaks the HH’s mom sent.
A work colleague of the HH’s gave him two packages of homemade lumpia for a treat on his birthday. They were gobbled up quickly by the HH, Monkey Boy and The Girl.
I was VERY grateful for the piece of foil the lumpia was wrapped in. We haven’t had a box of foil in our house for over a year now so you know… a 12 inch square of the stuff is pretty much like gold around here.
The Girl… She’s got this recycling thing down to a science.
Beans and rice, rice and beans.
Fred Meyer $10.82
The HH had a 3 day weekend and much to my surprise he didn’t leave leave the house for the first 2 days {he’s never done that before!} but when the third day rolled around he was getting a little stir crazy and asked if I needed anything at the store. So I gave him a little list and off he went.
Fred Meyer $11.99
He managed to stick to the list while he was in the store but as he was walking out someone was cooking ribs {and giving away samples} and he got sucked in.
Albertsons $2.08
Hamburger buns were $0.50 and the BBQ sauce was on sale for $0.77.
And then there was my trip with Mrs. HB…
I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so much food in a 72 hour period before. It was pure gluttony and I totally blame it on her. 😉 I was happy with the snacks I had packed but noooooo, she wanted to go out {or order in} for nearly every meal. But in her defense… she was there on business {and all her meals were paid for because they counted as a business expense}. I probably would have done the same thing. Well actually, I’m pretty sure all my meals would have been taken at various bakeries and included a London Fog. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Did you know Friday was national donut day? Yep. We were just doing our part.
Oh my goodness…. After the first offering we knew we were going to regret the $24.50 we had each committed to for high tea service. I’m still trying to decide if I should write about it…
Best pizza ever.
Whenever I see caprese salad on a menu I simply cannot pass it up.
More food…
A sampler platter Mrs. HB snuck up to the room during one of her dinner breaks.
My breakfast on the last day.
Fred Meyer $14.96
And last but not least… The groceries I picked up at Fred Meyer yesterday.
Keep your eyes peeled for grocery markdowns… That way you can splurge every once in awhile. This thing called life, you only get one chance at it… You might as well have some fun. 😉

Lumpia! I love lumpia. I often swing by the Filipino cafe near me and get some. Brings back memories of living on Guam.

I would like to read about the High Tea. 🙂
Rita says
The food looks so delish! Did you go to Victoria? That’s the only place I know of that has high tea. Would love to hear more about your trip.
Karen says
Oooohhhhhh…. I am a total junkie for a caprese salad too. Now, I am totally drooling!!!!

I’m curious as to why you buy half gallons of milk? What is the benefit for your family?
Mavis Butterfield says
To save money. Our local grocery store Fred Meyer offers the 1/2 gallon jugs of milk for $0.99 about every two weeks so I try and stock up then. Their regular price for 1 gallon of milk is $2.50-$2.79. So a savings of $0.50 – $0.79 per gallon for the smaller containers. Weird, I know.

I always laugh when our local store does a similar milk deal and the obvious answer, if you paid any attention, is to buy in the 1/2 gallon containers… I am that person that will stop someone and point out the math!
My favorite local grocer does a deal every Friday where you can get a dozen bakery doughnuts for $5.00. I was grabbing a dozen one day when a grandma picks out the smaller box and starts telling me about her grandkids coming for a visit. I told her she needed to buy the dozen because of the deal.. She swore she did not need any more.. I told her she would be getting 6 more doughnuts and saving $.89 from the half dozen price.. I then told her get the grandkids the yummy sticky ones and grab 6 cake doughnuts for herself and freeze them individually for future coffee treats.. SHe got all excited by that idea and bought a dozen! lolol
Mavis Butterfield says
That’s awesome. Go grandma go!
Taryn says
What flavor of macaron was that? My summer goal is to learn to make them. I’m always looking for flavor ideas.
Mavis Butterfield says
Strawberry lemonade. 🙂

I would love it if you posted about your experience with high tea! Everyone should do a high tea at least once in their lifetime. I never wanted to do high tea. However, when Brian Jacques was in town (when he was alive, of course), I purchased two tickets to take my son to see Brian Jacques over high tea. Brian Jacques was my son’s favorite author when he was young . . . the author of the Redwall series (and the Baker Hotel was where Donnie Wahlberg and Jenny got married), and it was a blast! My son, of course, could care less about the scones and fancy sandwiches; he got to shake hands with the author of his favorite book series over a cup of tea :-).
Lynn says
LOL! Now that was confusing … The Baker Hotel was also where the high tea took place.
Ms Sandie says
I second the high tea post! Please please please
Karin Carson says
OMG LoVe LoVe Love that cake plate, where did you get it ? Cake looks fabulous.
Mavis Butterfield says
Costco sold them in a set of 2 a few years ago. I kept one and gave the other away.
Carrie says
Strawberries are on sale this week..i might have to try making that cake?

It sounds like you are hesitating to post about the high tea because it didn’t go well/was bad? If so, yes, please, post it (post it anyway, really). Not every review of every place you try has to be good. Some places have crummy service, overpriced food, or horrible atmosphere, and I would rather hear the truth about it. Having nothing but super positive reviews of places also makes it look like the reviews aren’t as honest (whether that is true or not). If you had a negative experience, please share it with us. Tell us what was good, what was great, and what you really didn’t like.
