It had been a few weeks since I had been to Winco so this was a stock up trip for me. Some of the highlights were: Greek Gods Yogurt $2.64 {sweet price!} 18 oz boxes of blueberries for $2.99, Caesar salad mixes for $1.49, S&W chili beans $0.68 {they are DELICIOUS over rice} bulk items, smelly hot dogs and bologna for the boys, and a bunch of baking supplies. The most exciting item though was the 24 pack of Pirate’s Booty for $4.98. I snagged that for the boy’s lunches.
Fred Meyer $7.05
On the way back from Winco I remembered I needed some tots for the boys so I popped into Fred Meyer. Why people pay full price for bread I will never understand. Even when I can’t make it to the bakery outlet to stock up on bread, Fred Meyer ALWAYS has bread marked down somewhere in the store. Lately, I’ve been noticing my store has a cart full of marked down bread at the end of the bread aisle in the mornings.

On Sunday morning the HH stopped by Fred Meyer to pick up some fresh basil for homemade pizzas and while he was there grabbed another gallon of milk and some nectarines. For a second {maybe a third?} week in a row milk was $2.59 a gallon. Which I thought was pretty strange since milk is usually on sale for $0.99 per half gallon every other week. But it seems lately there haven’t been as many deals on milk. I wonder why?
Anywho, a new Fred Meyer store will be opening in town soon {the big type of store with a garden center, clothing and housewares} and I suspect that when it does they’ll have some pretty sweet grand opening deals that I’ll be able to stock up on.
Zaycon Fresh Free thanks to Zaycon credit
The boys love the breaded chicken and I LOVE the turkey breasts from Zaycon. They are so so easy to cook. Just plop it in a crock pot, turn it on and a few hours it’s done. It already comes seasoned! Seriously, the easiest dinner ever. I plan on saving one of the turkey breasts for Thanksgiving and one for Christmas dinner this year. No more dealing with the entire turkey when I can just serve the best part.
Garden Snacks like green beans, tomatoes, zucchini, berries and potatoes were plentiful this week.
I have in fact found the best tater tot recipe on the planet. The boys went crazy for it. I’ll post the recipe tomorrow.

The Girl and I made big salads one night for dinner…
And then made the boys weenies and fries. It’s like one of their favorite meals.
And then there was pizza night. Which, are you ready for this!? The HH made.
As in, he walked into the kitchen, turned on the oven, put ingredients onto the counter and created an actual meal. It’s a once a year kind of thing for him and every time he cooks {which would be a grand total of maybe like 25 times in the 25 years we’ve been together} he likes to say “Everybody knows the best cooks are men. It’s a fact. Just ask anyone.”
And then I smile and nod and say something like “Yes, dear, yes they are” and then I pat his back and turn around and roll my eyes deeply.
Because c’mon, he’s my husband, and I think he’s kind of funny. If I only cooked once a year, I could probably plan it all out and be freakin’ awesome at it too. But what do I know? 😉
Ahhh husbands. They are funny, funny people.

Last night I made taco salad. I prepared the meat with onions and taco mix. Made a huge salad and sprinkled it with cheese and a scoop full of the taco meat. Yummmm!
HH’s pizza looks delicious. Too bad he doesn’t get the urge more – like once a month!

I got pastrami and corned beef from the deli counter at Fred Meyer and some red potatoes and bacon and made sandwiches and German potato salad which my husband never tires of. Yesterday I made a pasta dish with peas and bacon in it- also a big hit. I baked some cookies called dirty chocolate cookies this weekend as well as some chocolate muffins..and that was about it.

This week we have started the GGC at our house (Great Grocery Clean-out). The rules are…no buying groceries except bread, milk, eggs, carrots, celery and onions until ALL of the pantry and freezer items have been used. I figure we won’t shop for at least a year. In the interim, I save the grocery money for a re-stock when we get there. This is going to mean a complete turn-over on items in the house which I figure is a good thing every once in a while! I am having to rearrange the meal plan obviously to make this work. Tonight is a Creamy Cucumber Pasta Salad with a side of raw cauliflower, radishes & carrots with a dip for hubby (he doesn’t do veggies without dip).

My husband follows a low carb diet….which has made the things he tends to eat fairly repetitive. He doesn’t complain, but I wanted to serve up something new, so on the weekend I made an Asian Chicken cauliflower “rice” bowl using ground chicken, riced cauliflower and fresh ginger…things we don’t typically use. He really liked it and is happy to eat up the leftovers for lunch today. I also cooked pork tenderloin in the crockpot with some seasonings and he really raved about that meal!! Apparently, I am welcome to stock up on pork tenderloin whenever it goes on sale to repeat that recipe in the future.

My youngest son is a chef, and he has taught ME a lot about using the right utensils, ie, good sharp knives, and cast iron skillets—and he has provided me with same. He never takes me out on special occasions (like Mother’s Day or my birthday).Instead, he brings the ingredients for a great meal and cooks at my house, or has me over to his home. And he cleans up after himself in the kitchen! But guys who only cook once a year? I have another son who is like that, too. So when I read about your HH cooking once a year and his comment about men being the best chefs, I did not roll my eyes, but I DID laugh out loud. Thank you, Mavis, for the laugh of the day!

I made turkey meatballs in the Instant Pot and served over spaghetti for the manfriend and zoodles for me. I also made taco meat and served over cilantro lime cauli-rice for me and in tortilla shells for him.

Mavis, I was considering getting an Instant Pot and was lucky enough to borrow one from a friend to try first. I’m glad I did as it’s now saved me from getting one. Yes, it cooks things quickly, but you have to do everything at the last minute, as in put everything in the pot & then it’s done & then you eat. So you have everything to clean up after dinner. I MUCH prefer the crock pot. Set it up earlier in the day or the night before, set it & forget it, clean up everything right then. So when you serve dinner, there’s no big clean up after. I guess I’m not in such a hurry that I need to make potato salad in 10 minutes!

So glad to hear you say that Susie. I’m the only person I’ve heard of that doesn’t like the IP. I hated mine for the reasons you listed. Also, it took forever to heat up. Very frustrating! I’m grateful Amazon let me return it.

Hm. Lots of salads again this week. Hubby really wanted to invite friends over to dinner. I gave him the blank stare. It’s not that I’m antisocial. Well, I’m a bit of an introvert. I fall in the middle of the introvert/ extrovert scale.
But it’s that I have a full time job and 2 kids, and I do the vast majority of grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking. And I just can’t even. I mean, I can’t think about adding a “nice meal for guests” on top of “food for 21 meals for the week” and “Sunday neighborhood potluck food”. It’s too.damn.much.
Anyway, he did it anyway and did the grocery shopping for it. I did help with the cooking. So, grilled tri-tip and roasted potatoes (my famous ones) and a salad.
The potluck dishes were an awesome red cabbage and apple slaw and a fresh cherry tomato, fresh corn, and avocado salad (was delish!!)

We are enjoying a family trip to Europe. Tonight we stopped at the corner grocery store in Paris and ate oranges, a shared a sandwich, and tons of juices. It was in the 90s today and humid! Anyone else have depressed appetites when it’s hot outside?
Also tried to really eat out the pantry and freezer the month leading up to our trip. Saved the grocery money for our trip! We didn’t have a lot of perishables in the fridge to give away. If the electricity goes out while we’re gone there is less to spoil. Also less to go stale in the pantry!
My husband cooks occasionally and leaves a mess, but he tries to help. Most importantly he is not a complainer when I have the occasional failure in the kitchen.

Yes, when it is hot outside and I’m hot from working I have no desire to cook or eat. I like to keep a stash of frozen fruit in the freezer for days like that!

We just switched from cooking every night to using freezer meals, as we do every fall when I go back to work. So, we had a week of freezer food, including oven fried pork chops (broiled directly from frozen), homemade pizza (I freeze the crust, sauce, and cheese), lentil loaves (I freeze the batter), vegetable barley soup, hamburger soup, and spinach artichoke lasagna. Our tomato plants are still going crazy, so we also had BLTs one night.

My husband is similar: he only cooks a few times a year but when he does, it’s a big production. He researches recipes, tells me what to get at the store, and makes a mess—that I end up having to clean, sigh! (He would clean it *eventually* but since I have to make the next meal in the kitchen and every doggone meal after that, I have to clean it up so I can function.) Yesterday, it was French onion soup using Walla Walla sweet onions. (Let’s call that local even though it’s the other side of the state.) He was sweet and offered to make it using vegetable broth so I could have some (I’ve been a vegetarian for 12 years) but I told him to use beef broth so that it would taste the way he wanted it to. (Plus, eating soup when it was 86 degrees didn’t sound good to me.) He said it came out really well. Our teenage son is not a big fan of onions so he just ate the Gruyere cheese croutons. My husband eats the vegetarian food I prepare (day in and day out, you know, like most women cooks!! 😉 ) without complaint so I don’t fuss when he gets a bee in his bonnet to cook something meaty for himself. But I couldn’t stop myself from pointing out that I did the dishes TWO TIMES yesterday, because there were so many! 🙂 Also, belated best wishes on your anniversary. My husband and I are one year behind you—we met in 1993 and married in 1995.

Last week I grilled fresh salmon a friend had caught. I brushed them with a little oil added salt, pepper and some lemon slices and wrapped them in foil. Simple and delicious!

Driving home from work last night I was thinking what to make for dinner. It ended up being black bean, pepper and onion fajitas on homemade tortillas (a first for me). The peppers were getting past their prime and the black beans have been in the pantry awhile. The best part was my sister stopped by and declared it delicious so it wasn’t just my opinion. 🙂

I cook a lot but the one thing I can’t stop thinking about is roast. The easiest roast EVER! A friend told me to just sprinkle the bottom of my crock pot with Adolph’s meat tenderized (it has no MSG) and then sprinkle it all over the roast. Put it in the crock pot. No browning, no water, nothing else! 6-8 hours on low. It was perfect!! Then a couple of nights later I used the leftovers to make philly cheesesteak quesadillas. I browned up some onions and bell peppers. And made up a horseradish mayo (because I love the stuff). Used provolone cheese and put them all on my griddle! We gobbled them up and added them to our menu list!!

Actually they are ceramic and from Anthropologie. And they are The Girl’s plates. 😉 My mother gives her a new one every year at Christmas. Monkey Boy gets TP and Doritos, The Girl gets dinner plates. It’s kinda funny if you ask me.
