Well, I guess I know what we’ll be doing all weekend. ๐
Our four cords of firewood were delivered yesterday morning and ever since it arrived the HH has turned into some sort of stacking machine. When we ordered the wood I told him I thought it would be kind of cool if he’d stack it in an artful way {like they did in the book Norwegian Wood}.
But at the rate he’s going, I don’t think it’s going to happen. ๐
My current job title is kindling girl.
So far I’m up to 3 bins of assorted kindling bits.
With the current price for heating oil at a whopping $5.44 a gallon, it would cost $1,088 to fill up our 200 gallon tank. During the winter months {Mid- October to Mid- April} without any firewood to burn in our wood stove, we’d likely fill up the tank about once every six weeks.
- 4 tanks of heating oil $4,352
- 4 cords of firewood $1,400
It’s kind of a no-brainer that heating our place with firewood this winter is going to be a whole lot less expensive than turning on the thermostat.
Plus, wood heat is so much cozier than forced air. And, I love the morning ritual of getting the fire going and watching Miss Lucy camp out by the woodstove sprawled out in her little dog bed all cozy and warm.
Winter. It’s coming. And it’s never too early to start preparing.
Have a good weekend everyone,
Peace Out. ๐

It looks lovely to me. We used to heat with wood in CT for the same reason. Kentucky is treating us well

I priced out my firewood this week. The man I’m buying from is selling for $270/cord with no delivery. He actually sells it for $90 per pickup truck load (5 ft bed) which equates to a little over 1/3 cord. I’m going to get my first load next week. I’m hoping to get up to 3 cords by the time I’m done.
I have a heat pump for heat. Even in GA, we get down into the teens and twenties and when that happens, the heat pump doesn’t work and the baseboard heat comes on. Holy Moly, is that expensive! Wood is well worth it.

When the same thing happened back in the early 70s, my dad put a wood stove in our 1200 sq ft house. At the time, I never realized there was central heat, but boy did I complain about bringing in wood every evening. I remember our rooms would get cool during the night, but it was so much cozier than the central heat we have now. Plus, the blowers were awesome for drying clothes as we line dried everything.

So far we have only 2 cords stacked. This is the time to get it for the best price; it’s only going up.

If it is dry wood you got a deal we are over 400.00 a cord here in NH. Luckily we had some oaks taken down several years ago so we have wood for the next few years

Yes, itโs dry.

Firewood here seems to be running about $210 for Fir and $230 for Oak. We’ll order a mix for winter and probably end up paying about $880 for the four cords. It seems like the prices are a little better this year – we could be seeing a glut of wood from the ice storm of Feb 2021 when so many trees came down.

Isnโt your new Aga stove going to keep the house warm?

I’m curious about this as well — I know the AGA stays on all the time and is radiant heat but is it enough to heat a home? And what happens in the summer when it’s 90 and humid outside and you need AC? How does that work? Anyone know?
Cheryl says
A blog I read once said she turned off the AGA during the summer due to how hot it was in her kitchen.. It wasn’t in the US and her kitchen might have been very small. Guess Mavis is going to find out soon.

Wood heat — is the best.
Growing up, my brothers cut wood all summer, occasionally I helped. They sold it to earn college money (back when you could earn enough for that….in the 80s)
It kept them busy, out of trouble, and earning money. Plus we heated with wood and I still do today.

Here in TX, our need for wood varies. This past winter we had 30 fires, which is a lot. We never buy wood. We just collect it when people set it on curb. Our goal is to keep one cord on hand. Fires are one of my favorite simple pleasures in life.

There’s nothing better than heating with wood. (Not gonna tell you that we used to get 20 face for $800.00 ten years ago) We switched over to gas and now I just push a button. This old rickety body couldn’t keep up with all the stacking and fetching.
My dad loved heating with wood too, and would burn so hot that we would threaten to wear bathing suits to family functions in the winter, lol.
Enjoy your cozy wood heat, I am so jealous of Miss Lucy.

WOW! We are fortunate where we live in PA, we buy our wood for $120/cord. Admittedly that’s not delivered but, whew! I think we could get it delivered for about $160/cord. But we like the guy we buy from and it’s nice to visit while we load our truck and trailer.
