Today is officially the first day of spring.
After a long cold winter, I’m not sure you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who wasn’t looking forward to some aspect of spring. As a gardener, I’m almost giddy about it.
I spend most of March begging and pleading with the ground to unfreeze so I can plant something, anything, outdoors. I look forward to spring every single year. The season holds so much promise, don’t you think?
With the changing of the weather, the blooming of the flowers, the vision of a full, lush garden, there is so much to love about spring.
The Gardening
Of course this is at the top of my list. I spend most winters planning my spring garden and prepping seeds indoors, so when the weather starts to change I want to throw open the shutters and scream, “It’s time!”
Of course I don’t have shutters to throw open, but if I did, I totally would.
When the world is cold and frozen, I daydream about digging in the dirt, harvesting fresh produce, watching little seedlings sprout up. Spring gardening might not see the biggest yields, but spring gardens definitely hold the most promise in my heart.
My gardening plot at this house is a pretty small one, but I am VERY excited to get out there are start digging!!
The Flowers
I love fall for the beautiful leaves and winter for the white blanket of snow, but the blooms of spring just might take the cake.
When those flowers burst through the ground and sprinkle the landscape that has been bleak and barren for months with color, I can’t help but smile. Spring flowers are so refreshing, so bold and so freakin pretty.
After planting all those bulbs last fall I am especially excited about this spring!
I like driving around to look at them, kinda like some people drive around to look at Christmas lights. It might be the contrast of the blah winter scenery, but seeing all that color just puts me in a better mood.
The Weather
By the time spring rolls around I’m so over the cold I can barely stand it, aren’t you?
I don’t want to wear a heavy coat. I don’t want to curl up under a blanket. I’m over all of that. I just want to open the windows and let the fresh breeze in.
I want to be able to open those windows without freezing. And I want ALL the sunshine that comes with spring. That glorious sunshine beating down on my face as I work in the garden. There are few better feelings in the world!
And hey, better weather means better working conditions for the HH {and all those things he’s going to make me this year}. 😉 HA HA HA
The Outdoors
I don’t let the winter months keep me cooped inside. I’ll still bundle up and venture out to take Lucy on walks, but I certainly don’t look forward to it. In the springtime though, you can’t keep me inside.
I’ll spend every waking second outdoors. I’ll take longer walks and enjoy every second of it, eat meals outside in the beach chairs or even drag the laptop out and work from my backyard.
Springtime is not too hot and not too cold. Makes for the most perfect outdoor weather {and for buying Lucy ice “pup” bowls at DQ}!
The Longer Days
I pack my days. I sleep very little, so when I’m up, I’d love for the sun to join me so I can get my laundry list of outdoor chores done. As winter fades and the days begin to get longer, my to-do list happily grows.
Those longer days mean more productive hours for me, and that thought makes me happier than you can imagine. Plus I’m 98% finished with all my wool “projects” for the year too, so I’m especially excited about spring this year!
The BBQs
Coleslaw, mustard potato salad, burgers on the grill. Yum! I absolutely love BBQ season. I love it most though because it means the HH is doing more of the cooking. It means less chaos in the kitchen for me because he’s cooking outside.
The Smells
Speaking of BBQ, walking outside and smelling those grills and whatever mouthwatering recipe other people are cooking is awesome. I also love the smell of fresh cut grass and then, of course, there are the flowers. Those smells all mingle together and make spring a great season for your sniffer!
What’s your favorite season? Are you a spring lover, too?
If so, what’s your favorite thing about spring?

Wow…I couldn’t have expressed it better. March has me coiled like a spring, just waiting to be set free!

Fall is my favorite, but your post is a fabulous, thoughtful ode to spring! Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Can’t wait to see where your bucket bike takes you this year!
(Today, first day of spring, it’s snowing in Chicago.)

I used to love Spring for gardening. Now that I don’t have time to seed start and maintain a veggie garden, I love Spring so that we can finally take walks and play outside again. We just had a massive playset installed this week, and it’s already been so amazing not to have to try to drive to the park before it gets dark.

I love spring too. Everything so fresh and new. Is a long time coming here in Montana though. Still waiting.
Congrats on almost being finished with your wool!

Will you try to keep all that foliage on outside the fence cut down? To keep rodents, ticks, etc., at bay?
Just wondering.

Happy Spring!
Definitely the colors and everything turning green, but especially opening all the windows and letting the stink out

Can’t wait to see all the bulbs you planted last year bloom.

I think someone has cabin fever!!
And it’s true! I know EXACTLY how you feel, because I feel the same way!!! We just had a Mid March blizzard…..which was fun, because we haven’t had much snow this year, and because it watered my garden spot, AND it is melted already!!

I’m doing a garden this year and am crazy excited about the seeds sprouting in my kitchen!!
Also, I saw my first bluebonnets of the season today… How appropriate for the first day of spring!

Spring for sure! Happy Spring Mavis!

Here in Western Washington, my daffodils are in full bloom! I have a gift card to a nursery, so plan to buy some roses this weekend. I am a summer girl, but only because of where we live. Our summers aren’t usually extremely hot, so I love the chance to be outside!

Mavis, you said you don’t sleep much. I didn’t understand how people could function on little sleep but then read about studies of people/families with a short sleep gene mutation. Fascinating!
Happy Spring!!
