Waking up on a Sunday morning to find hate mail in your inbox… is just lame. I found this gem in there this morning:
I am a father of two young boys, a husband, a stay-at-home dad, a farmer, a business owner, an insurance agent, the primary grocery buyer for the family,. we are very liberal Christian Buddhists, who are trying to feed our kids quality, wholesome, foods. We started following you out of an interest of saving money and felt we were aligned with your principles of integrity and wholesomeness……………..
We make just over 100k annually in a family of four. We try to be as much GMO free/organic as possible and like you, we are forced to make adjustments. But, you, with your unabashed embracing and unapologetic, Lo and behold! even billboardizing of corporate brands, is down right shameful and literally exemplifies a vacuum of integrity. wtf?!?! You are all over the board of NOT Seattle from promoting GMO foods to supporting big ag. You are catering to the lowest common denominator.
From onehundreddollarsamonth.com to “I have become a Mormon/Pinterest/have more babies/support Walmart/ big Ag supporting/lookatmynewcupboards hack, who could care less about ethics, morals or integrity.
Please, prove me wrong. Badbye
~Michael
Dear Reader Who Has It All Figured Out and Also Happens To Know Who Among Us Ranks As The Lowest Common Denominator:
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names? Well, I’ve been called every one in the book. Twice. And then some. And I’m not kidding. I’ve been called:
A Martha Stewart Wanna-be {I totally am!!}
An Extremist
A Stuck Up Valley Girl
A Stepford Wife
A Freak
An Elitist
A Sell-Out
A Puppet for Monsanto
A Tree-Hugger
A Mormon
A Bad Parent
A Bad Human
A Bad Wife
A Bad Gardener
A Bad Blogger
So unfortunately, you are not the Mavis-bashing trailblazer here. Too bad, too, because the prize for that was a box of Lucky Charms I bought at Walmart. You see the thing about opening yourself and your life up to the entire internet is that you have to have a pretty thick skin. Which lucky I do. I also don’t take myself too seriously. You clearly do though, so I thought I’d dissect your email in the most “unabashed” and “unapologetic” way possible. Since that’s how I roll {or roll over, according to you}.
I am not one thing. I wear many hats {and sometimes my pilgrim costume, too}. My readers don’t fit one mold either. Their demographics are all over the map. Young, old. Rich, poor. Male, female. Atheist, Buddhist. I like it that way. I will never judge you for the way you look or the car you drive or the way you feed your family or the stores you choose to shop at or the life choices you have made or the money in your bank account or the God you choose to worship or the way you prefer to parent or the lifestyle that you lead.
I like Mormons, although I am not one. In fact, I like people from ALL RELIGIONS {and atheists too!}. I love living in the melting pot that is the Pacific Northwest, although I didn’t realize we only accepted one kind here. I try to feed my family the healthiest food possible, although sometimes we eat GMO-riddled food {and *gasp* live to see another day}. I tip my hat to stay-at-home dads, although my husband chose a different path and I have been grateful everyday that we’ve had a constant roof over our heads and have never had to struggle to put food on the table.
I won’t judge or look down on anyone for shopping at Walmart, although that is not my personal store of choice. I offer all sorts of info on gardening and frugal living and post my favorite tried and true recipes, although sometimes my site is about none of those things. I am super supportive of you getting pregnant, or not. Reading The Book of Mormon or the Torah or The Bible, or not. Searching Pinterest for the latest and greatest, or not. Having tons and tons of babies, or not. Eating nothing but high-fructose corn syrup, or not. Busting your butt to earn money to install some new cupboard in your new kitchen that you have nearly worked your fingers to the bone to help construct, or not.
I don’t judge, because at the end of the day. Who cares. Go live your life the very best way you know how, and I’ll do the exact same thing. Plus, none of us need to judge; clearly you’ve got the market cornered there.
I’m not perfect. And unlike you, I don’t have it all figured out. I make mistakes in every aspect of my life from time to time. And that’s okay. I’m never going to please everyone. Those who try will inevitably spend the rest of their days doing just that. Sounds exhausting and not very fun.
Plus, it’s not a contest. So I just live my life for me, and I invite those who would like to follow along to do just that. And you might not always want to. You might not love what I post or what I stand for or what I’m up to. You might think I’m your favorite person on the planet or a sell-out or both, depending on the day. And that’s okay, too. I’m just going to be over here living my life and blogging all about it, imperfections and all.
Have a Nice Day,
~Mavis
Margaret says
i like you Mavis just the way you are! I sort of feel sorry for the hate mail guy’s wife, and especially his kids.
Sig says
You rocked it, Mavis! I’m pretty sure the point of your blogging is not a dot-to-dot book of how others should live THEIR lives. We may not agree on everything, but that’s life and I love living it. Getting a peak into how you live your life gives me ideas of what to do, or not. Thank you!
Sig says
*wrong “peak”, I know. I hope he doesn’t come after me.
Tia in Boise says
huh? did a 10-year-old girl write you a letter? “bad-bye”? seriously. i’m sure you will be flooded with posts of support. (and i’m fairly certain this person won’t have the guts to read them,) but like all sources of info anyone might not agree with: don’t read it. and we wish you “bad riddance”. couldn’t help myself. keep doing your thing, mavis, and thank you for helping me save money and be inspired in so many ways!
heidi says
Live it, great response!
heidi says
Sigh, love. LOL
Mary Ann says
Wow, it’s so easy for people to be huge A-holes these days sitting behind the computer anonymously hurting others.
Michael — if you don’t like the direction Mavis is going or the things she posts, just go away quietly. There’s no need to be so hateful.
Mavis — don’t let anyone like this get to you even in the slightest. You’re doing a great job with your blog!
Linda Gabel says
Well said Mavis. I look forward to your blog, your insight, the deals you provide and the beautiful pictures that you take, My husband and I raised 2 children on much, much less than the $100,000 dollars that the “gentleman” lives on. We still make much, much less than that. Any tip or bargain that I can find is like adding to my income. So, I appreciate your contribution to society. I don’t agree with everything, it would be weird if I did, so if I don’t like something I just scroll past it. Granted, I don’t scroll past much! Keep on keeping on, like they said back in my younger days, your opinion is yours and the fact that you choose to share it is awesome.
Twinmomma says
I’m a mom of two who is trying sooo hard to be as best of a mom as I can. I would love to have more children, however whatever being up there has not granted that request for four years so who knows. The fact of life is that sometimes choice are made for us. We have to shop at Walmart. The other stores in the vicinity are either too expensive or they don’t have what I need. It is just part of living in the country. I also grow an enormous 3500 sq ft garden with no hybrids all organic techniques. Life is a study of circumstances, of contrary principles. The idea of not living through the hardships my family faces everyday sounds sooo tempting but I think when children see their parents struggle, see them have difficulties it adds to their adult character.
Dianna says
What a petty man. If he doesn’t like your blog, then he should just stop reading it. It’s really that simple. I don’t know why he felt the need to put you down. I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of years now. It makes my day just a little bit happier which is why I keep on reading. Peace out Mavis. ❤️
Cecily says
What on earth is a “Christian Buddhist”. That is a complete oxymoron if I’ve ever heard one.
erin s says
Haha…that’s exactly what I thought.
sharon d. says
And a liberal one at that 🙂
Angie says
Tell Mr. Mom to chillax! Sounds like he’s a mixed-up fellow, if you ask me. I didn’t realize Christian Buddhists were so not nice! Which personality wrote the letter, the Christian or the Buddhist? Ha ha!
leslie says
I thought Christians AND buddhists aren’t supposed to judge others, spew out hate, or, for all matters of interest, call out other religions that profess good works.
I’m sure he’s referring to Mavis’ recent post on things to do in SLC, UT. Does that mean she’s a mormon? If she writes a post about Seattle or San Francisco are we supposed to assume that Mavis is gay/lesbian?
Mr. Mom, should we judge you by your letter? Because it sounds like you need your mouth washed out with soap.
Ais'Lynn says
I really need to Google this Christian Buddhist thing. I’m mind boggled!
Tracy T says
Amen!
Delores says
Keep rocking on, Mavis! Your blog is still one of my faves. I appreciate that you are real and have a philosophy of do what works for you. Life is hard, we need to encourage each other, not tear each other down.
You handled that way better than I would have. I would probably still be seeing red. 🙂
Jen says
Well, nobody is forcing him to look at your blog. All he has to is smugly refrain if he feels that strongly about what you write. It’s really quite simple.
Leslie says
Life is all about choices… and I for one really appreciate the conversations you initiate to help me make the best choices for me. THANK YOU! So sorry for the stupid idiotic choice he made by sending that email… Keep on keeping on…
Peggy says
Well said Mavis. None of us have it all figured out. Sometimes I live minute by minute…literally. I like to grow and preserve my own food, and buy locally raised meat, but I can’t always afford to. I have to buy the 5 lb. bag of frozen chicken from Aldi here and there, along with the frozen ground beef and turkey. I have a family of four to feed, plus I help two of my brothers with groceries. Dollars have to stretch. Very, very few people can afford to live the life that feel is ‘the perfect life’ I try to live to a certain standard, I don’t compromise on some things, but those things are usually moral and ethical lines that can’t be crossed. I don’t tolerate people who are mean or make fun of other people. I shop at Walmart for things…I have to, simply said. I buy more local from gifts to groceries, but I don’t know of any locally made TP, I think you have a good handle on life, and have been lucky, or blessed, to not have a financial struggle. That will make some people angry, but you are blessed, others shouldn’t be angry over that. You seem nice and seem real. I hope you have a great day. 🙂
jan dennis says
I was stuck on the same thing: what is a Christian Buddhist? That guy’s got serious issues.
sindy says
Mavis. I think you are awesome, fun and look forward to reading your blog everyday. Thank you for writing your blog.
As far as what Micheal wrote, shame on him. It is a free country he DOESN’T have to read or do anything you post about in your blog.
I am glad that you are not letting it bother you. I hope he sees all the POSITIVE responses that you get . Hopefully he will move on in his life and try to be positive , nice and LET IT GO.
Andrea W says
Well said Mavis!

Some people just gotta hate. I’m a Martha AND Mavis wanna be! Carry on, ’cause plenty of us are behind you!

Patty says
Well said Mavis! Mean and unhappy people stink!
Kathy says
I am speechless, which is a rarity, and have mm only 6 words to say about that man and his email:
Not very Christian-like of him.
Happy Sunday Mavis!
Terri says
Maybe it’s a “Christian Buddhist” thing, lol!
bethb says
Don’t bother to either explain OR apologize. This guy is not for real. He’s yanking your chain This maybe his version of humor but who cares. Just ignore and it will go away. Responding encourages the fool
Terri says
“Too bad, too, because the prize for that was a box of Lucky Charms I bought at Walmart.” Hahaha! Dude, if you don’t like someone’s blog, don’t read it! There’s a blog out there for every niche.
Karen at A Glimpse Into My Reveries says
Ha! That line made me Laugh OutLoud!
Brenda says
That guy is crazy!!!
Linda says
Well said Mavis!!!! I can’t believe people sometimes. When I peruse the internet and come across a blog that I don’t care for – I simply move on. Why people feel the need to comment in such a rude manner is beyond me. A “Christian Buddhist”?!??! What is the world is that anyway?!?!?!? We do not all have to agree on everything – what a boring world this would be!!! Keep doing what you are doing – I look forward to your emails everyday and enjoy your blog. You handled that waaaaayyyyyy better than I would have!!!! Peace out girl scout!!! : )
Leslie says
I love your response. Makes me like you even more. As a Christian, he has probably already heard that when you rebuke a wise woman, she will love you. And so you did.
Diana says
Note to Mavis: You are using your blog as a source of income, so at one time or another, you’ve been almost all of those things on that list. Occasionally you post something I think is really cool. Occasionally you post something that offends me. Big woop. It’s your blog. Carry on.
Note to Michael: Don’t ever worship a blogger. Some put forth a tremendous effort to maintain great, informative blogs, but not a single one of them is perfect. Not one. They create an internet persona, with the ability to fake everything from names to families, homes and ideals. The more successful a blog becomes, the more likely the little homemaker out front is supported by a professional team behind the curtain, and/or corporate sponsor(s). If you put a blogger on a pedestal, s/he will come crashing down eventually. Better to just take the blog for what it is. That’s probably all the blogger wants anyway.
Sherry in Sumner says
Way to go, Mavis! Your happiness shows through. Sadly, his unhappiness does too.
Megan says
I have never read any blog that I took too seriously or tried to model my life after completely. I see them all as a good information gathering tools and I take pieces from each one, including some of the amazing comments. I have learned so much about so many topics that the list could go on for pages. I think that the negative poster hasn’t gotten the gist of your blog, which from my perspective is, “Do the best you can with what you have.” You summed this up eloquently without resorting to nastiness which is very impressive in this day and age on the internet. You are a class act Mavis!
mamavanous says
Thank you Mavis! For living YOUR life & sharing with us all; good, bad, or ugly! Well stated response & please DO NOT dwell on it. Have a WONDERFUL afternoon and a GREAT week!
Katie says
To your response:
Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap!
To the letter writer:
Sheesh buddy take a step back. Go read Food Babe exclusively if that’s what you’re looking for. Over here, we’re just trying todo our best.
Karen says
Hi Mavis, once said by my favorite character…”You are good enough , you are smart enough and doggone it , someone likes you!” A lot of someone’s like that you. You are honest and forthright and don’t have a lot of “aires”.
“To thine own self be true!” I’ll keep reading and hopefully your new critic will lighten up and see that we can all share a good point or two and agree to disagree but not be disagreeable. If he feels more comfortable reading another blog somewhere else, we’ll ok!
Have a great day Mavis!!!
randy says
Regarding your hate mail. I was stopped at 100K a year which is pretty darn good for a salary for anyone ( at least in Maine. ) I started reading you because you were a gardener. I have drifted away recently as your focus has been more on your house and moving to a new gardening area. I realize as a blogger, if it is your job getting people to make regular hits is important. I think continuing to focus on frugal, healthy, and how to grow amazing gardens… is what i am hoping from you. I have thought a great deal about how people are really hungry in our country. Really hungry, and the movement back to growing one’s own food is such a step in a good directions. .. Seriously… keep doing what you are doing…
holly needham says
*high fives Mavis* lol love ya and your thick skin, and your pilgrim costume and your attitude. …keep on rocking it
Krista says
Now that was some of the funniest shit I’ve read in a long time! Loved your response, Mavis. You kept it classy and real and I totally agree with RebekahU who quoted TSwift.
Jane says
This reminds me of how it’s so easy to get caught up in all the laws/rules (where to shop/what to eat, etc) that we forget about the importance of being in relationship with people. While we should be concerned about our health and our food, anymore it seems impossible to do everything right. So much of it is just a distraction from why I believe we are really here- to love and help others and bring glory to God while doing it. Whether others share my beliefs or or not, whether they grow their own food or eat only fast food, it’s the person that matters. May we all show grace and kindness to everyone (including ourselves:-)). Love you, Mavis. And you, too, Michael.
tc says
GReat response to this idiot with an attitude.
I don’t agree with everything on your blog, I really like the gardening part the best and the links to free kindle books. However, no one can agree with everything anyone does or says, you write what ever you want and I will read and follow whatever part of your blog I want to.
It is a free country, free speech, he can remove himself from your blog if he wants.
YOU ARE THE ONE WITH THE CLASS HERE, he may have more money but he sure has hell has far less manners.
Keep up the good work
Dena says
WELL SAID! YOU GO GIRL! I follow your blog daily for interesting info & entertainment value. I don’t always agree w/ some of your posts, but you would probably not agree w/ how I do some things. This is the US of A where we have the freedom to do things such as follow or ignore. If someone reading your blog likes something, GREAT! if they don’t, THEN JUST IGNORE IT! I enjoy reading about all that you do & realize it takes an incredible amount of effort. THANK YOU FOR YOUR BLOG!
Lisa says
Ugh, Michael’s attitude is absolutely revolting, in my opinion– mean, pompous, judgmental, and completely bypassing the humility and compassion of Buddhism AND Christianity. I’d say if he doesn’t like the things you write about, he should write his own blog. Maybe he will find some like-minded people, or maybe he will just end up getting his own hate mail from other internet bullies. It might give him some perspective anyway!
Susan says
What I love about your blog is your energetic, positive and humorous approach to life. I’ve learned all sorts of new gardening, cooking and other tips from you. Of course the content of every post is not relevant to me, but I still love them because of the refreshingly upbeat and fun tone. So, thank you. 🙂
I was struck that “Mormon” was included as a slur in the writer’s note, as if that were something to be ashamed of. Wow. Thank you for standing up for all religious beliefs. I believe it’s totally possible to espouse one’s own beliefs fully without slandering or mocking another’s.
Sherilsl says
I agree Susan. The fact that BOTH the writer and Mavis put being a “Mormon” in the negative pile makes me sad. I do see that Mavis did make a comment in reference to it. I’m just sad it made it to her bad list. As a “Mormon” I’m very happy to be and no “Mormon” I know would ever talk about a persons religious preference like that. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. (Pearl of Great Price, Articles of Faith, Articles of Faith 11)
Mary says
I don’t think Mavis was implying that Mormon was a negative — just something that people presume about her when they in fact know little about her.
Mavis Butterfield says
You are correct. I did not mean it as a negative. Oddly enough though, over the past few years I have received about 2 dozen emails/comments from people asking if I was Mormon {to which I did not reply}. I have never once been asked if I was any other religion. I can’t imagine ever liking or disliking someone simply because of their religious beliefs.
Heidi says
I think that there are a lot of Mormon bloggers. Design mom wrote a post about it awhile ago.
Kate says
There is so much I want to say. So much. Instead, I will leave it at this.
Mavis, you are awesome. You include us in your journey and that is fabulous. Thank you for the honesty, recipes, garden porn and laughs. We live in a world of various income levels and food deserts. I will not throw a stone at the person trying to eat more veggies by purchasing them at Walmart or by growing a single tomato plant on their balcony. What you do is encourage that person. Keep on, keepin’ on.
Peace out, girl scout!

Kirk says
Hope Michael’s high chair held up through all that banging!
Big hug to Mavis and then a high five!
Keep on blogging, Mavis! We love you in our house!
🙂
Melinda D says
Well said, Mavis, well said!
Heather T says
Way to keep your cool, I am sure it took a few times to get it “right” without screaming back. I have to say I have followed you for a few years now and your right sometimes I don’t agree with what ever so guess what I move on and live my life doing my thing, that is all we can do and try to just treat each other with respect, which you clearly gave this man who blew off a lot of steam your way. Peace out girl scout 😉
Sarah says
Hilarious. I guess I should check your archives- I totally missed the “have more babies” post. Good thing you have thick skin.
Holly says
Sorry you received such a mean letter, Mavis. You don’t deserve it. I feel sorry for Michael, too. Judging others, having a “holier than thou” attitude and spreading that unhappiness is a sad place to be. I hope he can find a way out of that state of mind. As for you, keep up the great work. Regardless of whether I agree with every detail of your blog, I see what you’re doing – you’re sharing what brings you joy in your life. You’re funny, kind, and thoughtful and I hope you don’t change a bit!
Richelle Koeppe says
Mavis, You go girl. The wonderful thing about this great nation is we all have freedom of thought, religion, and press( blogging). If Michael doesn’t like what you blog, then there are tons of other blogs- move on. You are not holding a gun to his head. Please continue to live, love, laugh, and blog about your own unique experiences in this journey we call life. He calls himself a liberal, but that should constitute- a live and let live policy. Instead he sounds like a food dictator. Also, a Buddhist should never slander another person…bad form.
Lynne says
Sounds like someone forgot to take his meds this morning!
Your response was classy and far kinder than he deserved. I love your blog and look forward to it every day.
Madam Chow says
Well, i knew I was in for a treat when he said he was a “Christian Buddhist.” Good job, Mavis.
Amy says
For a liberal Christian Buddhist he sure has a nasty attitude.
Vicki says
Mavis, I LOVE your blog. I look forward to reading it every day! I am older than you but you give great advice for frugal living, love your recipes and many other tips. My husband and I have been remodeling a 60’s ranch and I have been excited to see what you have done with your remodel. If this man doesn’t like what you have to say he should just guit reading. Nobody is forcing him to read your blog. And what does Badbye mean? Keep up the good work! You have lots of people who love what you have to say!
K says
I sort of agree with the poster. I mean, a snarky tone is not necessary, but I feel a lot like him. I really love this blog and have no plans to stop reading it, but wanted to to chime in that I know that Mavis will not be as helpful as some other blogs for suggestions of foods that I would also choose. And since I like so much of this blog, I wish that were not that case. However – I have no plans to stop reading. : )
NursePKJ says
Mavis,
Thank you for sharing your blog, ideas, thoughts and life. Our lives are richer because of your endeavors.
Michael, best wishes navigating the rest of your life with your current thought processes.
Michael, I thank you for posting that anger filled post. It reminded me, and obviously many others, the importance of letting Mavis know how truly wonderful, amazing and courageous she is for sharing her life, and taking a risk.
Keep doing all the great things you do Mavis! Wonderful rebuttal! I am truly sad that you were exposed to negative words and thoughts.
Positive thoughts to you and your family!!
Thanks, NursePKJ
Kirsten says
Christian Buddhist seems akin to that which he accused you – dipping into several different focuses which are seemingly opposed to one another. He wants you to be exclusively one thing, while he is not.
I guess we all would be found guilty were we to shake our finger at another individual for not being perfect.
He also seems to think a blog is a definitive guide to life, and that he has been led astray.
I discovered you while living in CA, but preparing to move to your town.
I have lived here for over two years now.
I was so excited to spot the pilgrim costume in the Turkey Trot last year. Made my morning!
I do hope you will be at the Turkey Trot again this year. I don’t love running, but I sure do have fun playing a little “Where’s Waldo” (so-to-speak) in the crowd while I push a stroller up those hills. 😉
Diane says
Wow! I may not agree with every blog post (who does?), but that was uncalled for! One of my first reactions was “$100,000?” It’s easy to buy organic etc. when you make that much! At least in my family/area/city/county/state $100,000 is a lot of income! And buying healthy costs more, as has been discussed here. If I had an income of $100,000 I could go down to my local food co-op (I could even join it!) and buy organic produce, order free range, organic meat, etc. But, I can’t. Organic milk is out of my range, although I do pay more for organic/free range eggs for the sake of the hens, not my health. Besides, organic food is not healthier than non-organic. I mean it has the same nutrients. And GMO? I know for a fact that there is no way to tell if meat came from an animal fed GMO feed or not. (I work for a feed company, and we do carry organic as well as soy-free. Soy does not pass as hormones from a hen to an egg and into a man and make him grow boobs either!)
I have known “very liberal” people just like Michael. So liberal they have no tolerance for those who they believe are not as liberal as they. I knew, quite well, a woman who stopped going to our mother/daughter book club because another mother was against gay rights. That is not tolerance, which liberal is about. My brother is the same way. So “liberal” he can’t accept our other brother’s conservative views without snipping and making fun.
Mormon? I wonder what blog post made Michael think that? I don’t remember an religious posts. And a Buddhist Christian? How about just making up your mind Michael? Neither Christians nor Buddhists should be reacting like you.
linda says
whole heartedly agree. If people were kinder to each other regardless of their opinion world would be better place.
Barbara says
Mavis, I have become a better gardener because of you. I have more meals to try on my family from those that you post. You have a great blog and I am sorry that people are rude to you.
Alicia says
Who peed in his organic toasted O’s this morning? Rock on Mavis!
maureen self says
Mavis, you are my first blog check each morning. I check in with you because I know you will put a smile on my face and provide useful relevant info. Hope letters like this never cause you to give up on a terrific blog.
CathyB says
It’s your blog and your life – so you get to make the rules. As my mom always said – If you can’t say something nice then don’t say it at all. Personally, I love the content, but I mainly read you for your great sense of humor! Keep it up.
Pam says
Way to go and shake it off, people have choices and he doesn’t have to choose to view your blog if he doesn’t want to!

My 7 year old let’s me know he like things/people/experiences by telling me their covered in Awesome Sauce. You are dripping in Awesome Sauce!

What a Moron!
Lauren says
Christian Buddhist? I’m not even certain how that would work. Pretty sure this little love note is a violation of tenants of both religions, though. Maybe he should look into Mormonism?
Shake it off. Seems like the crazies all come out at the full moon.
Stacey says
I wonder how many people this guy sent hate mails to. He must have a very long hate list if you are on it, that’s for sure. My guess is he thinks he has the perfect way to live but he’s not happy with the way it’s working out. I’m sorry you have to deal with such meanness. Even though you have a great response and kept it light-hearted, I’m sure it still hurt. Keep doing what you are doing. We read your blog because we love hearing what you share with us.
Mimi says
Well, whatever. I don’t want to jump into the murky depths of negativity. I found my way to some great deals last week via this website. I take it for what it is – a crazy mixed up jumble of well thought out offerings mixed with a bit of corporate crap. Take what you want and leave the rest. It’s up to the individual to swim in any direction that feels right. Mavis, keep on keeping on.
Jess - Nebraska says
Seriously, you and I should be friends. LOL!
Holly says
Hey Mavis…your reply was terrific. I’m not sure I would have been so classy…hehe. I LOVE your blog and read it daily. Not to worry….you have many fans! Keep up your fun posts! You are quite entertaining 🙂
Christine Hagen says
This person is confused. Anyone who calls them self a “liberal Christian Buddhist” is confused.
April says
WOW! $100, 000 family income and only one spouse working. Momma is bringing home some cheese. (maybe that is part of the problem)
Funny because for him to read the blog he must either SUBSCRIBE to it or LOOK FOR it. Just like television, if you don’t like the show….CHANGE THE CHANNEL.
Interesting how he blames Mavis for the fact that he thought they were the same and had the same values. Lots going on there! Unfortunately he showed all of the Mavis readers just how many bad decisions he makes by sending hate mail vs unsubscribing.
janet says
Mavis, I read your blog everyday, I have learned a lot and appreciate you very much. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Hugs!
Laura says
I guess some people never get out of junior high school. Why the need to slam someone for the choices they make. Just unsubscribe. Also, who cares how much money someone makes and why tell the world. Sounds kind of insecure. I love your blog Mavis. I’ll keep reading.
Cathy says
Wow,
I can’t believe some people .I have been enjoying your site. It’s fun.
If I didnt I wouldn’t read it , isn’t that the adult thing to do.
Thank you

You’re my domestic hero Mavis. That guy is not nice and I hope he didn’t get to you. I have learned so much about budgeting, gardening, and cooking from you as well as countless other home economics type things. One of my favorite things about you is that you are down to earth and not any type of proselytizer or holier than thou type about your opinions or lifestyle. You are REAL. Don’t pay any mind to guys like him!
Ashley says
A couple things I don’t understand….what does making 100k a year have to do with anything? Does the writer feel like that’s a lot or a little? Since he’s saying he has to make adjustments, I’m wondering if he he’s thinks that 100k isn’t much…pretty sure that’s a nice salary. Secondly, what does being a Mormon have to do with anything? I guess I’ve never heard anyone accuse someone of being a Mormon in a negative sense (I do live in the Midwest though, maybe it’s more common to say things like that the closer you get to the areas where Mormons have multiple wives???).
Anyhow, some people just need to get off their high horses and stop judging others. Regardless of what anyone thinks, you keep doing what you’re doing Mavis.
June says
Good for you, that was very well said.
Keep doing what makes “you” happy.
Carol says
Oh man! That dude wasted so much time and energy hating on you Mavis! And that list of names you have been called?! Wow, people are mean! I enjoy your blog. It’s your blog. Keep on writing, teaching and entertaining. Thanks for sharing his letter and your response.
Linda says
Nice response…. Besides hasn’t he found the delete button yet?
Kristen F says
Rock on Mavis!
EDW says
Ditto that! Love your blog – you make me laugh! Poo-poo to bad Michael!
Renay says
Yikes. This guy should find something constructive to do besides criticize people HE DOESN’T EVEN KNOW. I like your wit, your tips, and your recipes. Plus, it is fun to watch someone else go through the highs and lows of life and laugh like we all should – and most, but clearly not all, do.
I enjoy you, Mavis. Keep up the fun.
KC says
Michael, did that make you feel good? I do not understand why people have to be so mean and judgmental! I am glad you have tough skin Mavis! I truly look forward to your post every single day! You are very motivating for me and I truly appreciate you!
C says
I come here to see a post about gardening or diy or deals, but find this instead.?…Very disappointing as a reader, and comes off as childish and self-centered. What was the point of posting this?
ChrisM says
You go Mavis!!
Deborah says
Never feel like you have to prove anything to anyone but your self. And I am most of the things he negatively accused you of being and I don’t see anything wrong with it.

I look forward to reading your blog! Please carry on!

Hey there lovely lady. I enjoy reading everything you post. You inspire and give so much. Thanks for making parts of your life an open book. People should do it more often. Have fun and enjoy life for we have only one life to live ,so live.

Mavis,
Yikes!!! What a way to start Sunday!! Sounds like this guy has some real issues to deal with and he definitely was taking his frustrations out on you. You were right on target with your response. I just don’t know where he came up with “Christian Buddhist” Never heard that before!! There are Christians and there are Buddhists, as well as Mormans and what other faith you might have. We should just respect one another and try to get along.
I hope your day ends on a happy note, and for Michael, as my grandpa used to say, I just hope he gets some help for whatever is ailing him!!
Alison says
Mavis–So sorry that someone having a ‘terrible, horrible, no good very bad day’ felt he should take it out on you!
So undeserved by you!!!
Alison says
So when was the last time that you wandered over to Michaels house and ‘forced’ him to read your blog? If he doesn’t like it he should find something else to do with his time. Just my .02 cents worth!
Eileen says
Woohoo !! Great response that’s why I read your blog !! You go girl ! We need more people like you in this crazy world !!
Debbi Atkinson says
Bravo! Keep up the great work, Mavis. Please stay just the way you are and keep posting all useful ideas for the general public; we grownup’s will pick and choose what works for our lives and our families. I hope that poor man gets counseling; he’s clearly projecting his disappointment in himself or his spouse (or both) on to you! I pray he doesn’t take it out on the kids.
Have a truly wonderful week. And again, please don’t change a THING!!!
Jessica G. says
Wow! It sounds like Michael is mad at the world and venting his crankiness on you. My hope for him is that he can put away his anger and criticism long enough to actually enjoy life without trying to ruin someone else’s day.
Your blog has tons of fun tips (some are lifesavers, some I probably will never use which is true of all blogs I read), but the real draw for me is that your blog is just plain fun to read!
Keep up the great work, Mavis, and don’t let the haters get you down!
Kathy says
I absolutely love you! I look forward to all your emails, love your sense of humor and love the free stuff
To those haters—nobody is forcing you to read Mavis’ blogs…its a choice…yours…
Why are people always looking for the bad instead of the good…
But a big THANK YOU for all that you are and do!!
Sydelle says
I must confess. My first guilty pleasure was a magazine subscription to Martha Stewart Living. The ultimate dream. A great distraction and faraway world to live through vicariously. Then time moves on, we get older, priorities shift and responsibilities change. Mavis, you are my second guilty pleasure. Almost like a magazine subscription, but better. Daily updates to look forward to, especially if the day has been hectic and long. Amazing pictures and witty commentary to bring a smile to my lips and a chuckle to my day. Someone, albeit only a little bit, closer to my economic status than Martha ( bless her heart) and totally into SOME of the things I enjoy. You have created a wonderful retreat to visit for those of us who click onto your blog. Thank you for the priceless gift of sharing your world.
For the hate mail creator. No need to dignify his remarks with commentary.
Tracie H says
Holy crap! (Sorry I said crap on your blog). But seriously, I love your blog and I hope that you won’t let a lunatic keep you from letting us into a small part of your world each week. Keep on keeping on Mavis. Hugs!

Robbin S says
Who spreads hate like this? He obviously has issues. I honestly feel sorry for his two children to have a father that feels the need to vent on others like this. Can you imagine what kind of an example he is?? I love the response you gave Mavis! We all come from different walks of life on here & that’s what makes this beautiful thing called life so special.
Stacie says
Wow, Mavis, I’m sorry that happens to you! Some people have no couth. It’s really easy to hide behind a computer and criticize others which is exactly what that man is doing. I guarantee that same man could write a blog with a much useful information as yours which is applicable to a wide audience. Keep up the good work! I read every post you write and your gardening advice has helped me so much!
Jane says
People are crazy. You’re awesome and I salute your response. Righteous Lucky Charms usage!
Sandi says
Only a ‘hipster’ would self-identify as a “Christian-Buddist”. Um, sorry, I don’t get that part of his comment. I have learned some FAB recipes; was inspired to start gardening in our porch last year, and to try all sorts of new things because of your blog. Keep being yourself, and thank you so much for what you do!
Jennifer Meyer says
Ditto what everyone else said! You are none of the things he said. “You is kind. You is smart. You is important.”
sandy says
First I wish to thank you for your blog. It is the only one that I read daily and am enjoying watching your home remodel.
I understand that this is your job, and you are doing well at it. I enjoy you recipes and deals.
I lost my son just 11 months ago, and find that reading about your adventures comforting. As I lost my sense of adventure and bravery since this tragedy, your blog sincerely helps me through my day. When you experience a great loss and grief as I did, you look at life completely differently.
I understand the passion behind “Michaels” e mail. I don’t 100% agree, but I applaud his passion. Your response was heartfelt and honest, and I 100% agree with your philosophy. You are wise beyond your years. This blog is your livelihood, your “onscreen” personality. Live your life for you and your family ONLY. As I go through this journey, thats my one thing I know for sure…you stay true to yourself, as Michael is with himself. thank you for your blog-I know it takes a lot of time and energy, you have done a great job. carry on!
Mavis Butterfield says
Sandy, I am very sorry for your loss and thank you for the kind comments.

Holy Cow, Mavis! I go away and all H###, breaks out. Your hater is on another planet! Your answer was briliant, but I may have given the man the attention he deserved and simply deleted the post. I love reading your recipes, but can’t use any that call for wheat or sugar. I enjoy reading about your garden, even ‘tho mine was one potted tomato plant and a window box of peppers. We can agree or not on many things, but your sense of humor and honesty remain consistent while you pass on much valuable information.
In short, YOU ROCK and your legion of fans love you!
Kumbaya and group hug!

Way to go Mavis……we love you and your blog!

Touchy.
Many, many comments M. I like your stance. (I have gotten some of them myself, on a much smaller scale). After reading ALL of them, I’m interested in your comments (response). Anything? Are you ‘moved’ to respond? Or maybe you’ve said all there is to say.
Henrietta says
What an a-hole!! Mavis, you are wonderful and amazing, keep being you.

It always makes me chuckle when uppity people can’t insult properly. It’s “couldn’t care less,” not “could care less.” Bad at goodbye writer indeed. Next time send a bottle of gmo wine, that’ll probably hurt her feelings much more than sending goofy emails. Thanks for always being down to earth and fun, Mavis.
Kelly K says
Mavis you handled that beautifully!!! I love your blog just a little bit more now!!! What a big jerk this guy is! Love your advice, recipes, especially love your gardening advice!!! Thanks Mavis for being YOU!!!
Lissa says
That is one rude dude. So rude, I’m hoping his email was some weird joke. You rock Mavis. Whether it’s crafty tips, decadent recipes (I make your almond milk recipe from the make up artist in Atlanta (how random is that statement?!) weekly). I love following your remodel. I’m sad you sold your former house/garden, but I’m so excited for the entire ride. I buy your “deals” regularly. I have so much crap I don’t really need because of you and it all makes me smile (kitty jewelry, wall butterflies, pearl hair pins and on and on). I even purchased a flipping gnome to send to a random PO Box in WA that was then (hopefully) trucked in a motor home (well, rental car) to a children’s hospital in Tennessee. I laugh every time a see that picture of Andy/Francisco in a blond wig on your front page. Keep up EVERYTHING you do Mavis. Yours is the only blog I read. every. single. day. Thank you. Sincerely. Thank you.
Stephanie says
Mavis. You are a rockstar. Carry on.
Sandra says
Hmmm, I was brought up to believe that if we read only those we agree with all the time, our brains will shrink. It is good to consider points of view that are different than our own. Who wants to be like or think like everyone else?
Linda J says
Mavis, I’m sorry your Sunday started with so much ugliness. Thick-skinned or not, you shouldn’t have to deal with an ill-mannered, pompous, ass. I find your blog interesting, intelligent, and quirky in the best kind of way. Keep up the good work!
Katie C. says
Bummer. I’m a Mormon and Michael broke my winning streak. It’s been at least a month since somebody used “Mormon” as an insult. Lol, I have thick skin, too, though.
You know, I don’t choose to shop at Wal-Mart, but I think that sometimes people forget how many jobs Wal-Mart supplies so that those workers can put food on THEIR family’s table. It also significantly helps local economy.
Michael, you’ve been blessed to make such a generous income. I think you should consider that you are waaaay above the average household and try to not be a food elitist. Should people starve to prevent any defiled food from entering their body?
I have a $120 food budget and no garden to work with this month. That will certainly not buy the same foods you are fortunate enough to eat, but I’ll make my bread and every meal will be from scratch and we’ll eat salad, apples, bananas and oranges. For me and my house, we’ll be grateful for the food we have.
Mavis, you rock, sister! We Mormons would take you any day 🙂
Kate Hagan says
My 13 year old daughter just wrote something about being quirky and finding other quirky friends out there…well, that’s why we LOVE you, Mavis…because you are YOU…and inspire us to keep on swimming!

Jeeesh, he’s mean. Forget about him-don’t let someone like that live ‘rent-free’ in your head! Mean, mean, mean.
Carole Browne says
You go girl! I totally agree with your answer. You are a “live and let live” kind of person. The world needs more of that. There would be less strife and hardship in this world if more people were “live and let live” kind of people. I follow you because I find some of your articles very interesting, your recipes sometimes “knock my socks off”, and I find helpful, useful tips for gardening. I don’t care if you follow a religion or not, i If you only eat organic, or preprocessed crap, you’re a vegan, a Buddist, or an alien! Keep up the great work you do. No one can make you feel bad about yourself unless you allow it.
Cherilyn P says
Hi Mavis,
I love your blog! I’m happy for you and can’t wait to see the latest in your remodel. Thank you for all that you do!
I’ve been able to save a lot of money and have fun doing it raising 3 kiddos alone on substantially less than $100,000.
I’d like to say that I find it disturbing that grown up people feel they can bash others who are doing a service. I really find it funny that this ‘man’ is doing AND is proudly declaring his religion too.
Where’s his helpful blog??
Pam says
Well said. I agree that it’s rather immature for an adult to send an e-mail that, for most of us anyway, had a tone we abandoned in junior high school. So many people think the internet allows them to anonymously bash others who, as you pointed out, are just living their lives the best way they can. This guy probably felt pretty awesome after he sent that and, hopefully, will feel pretty foolish after your response (because I’m 100% sure he’s been waiting to see if you would respond). Just like junior high school……….:( As for me……I’ll keep reading. Cause I’m just trying to live my life the best way I can and you sometimes have the most awesome ideas/advice for things I hadn’t even thought of. And I appreciate that very much so……thanks!
Sally says
Sounds like everyone has it covered! What a mixed up goober (this’s to go along with the junior big theme). Thank you for putting it out there, Mavis!
Rebecca says
Love your blog Mavis! Am in awe of your garden and look forward to hearing what you are up to every day. So glad you have a thick skin and don’t let people who try to peg you as this or that bother you. You rocked it on your response!
Kim says
I would have just ignored it and chalked it up to someone having a bad day.
Mary Howe says
What Christian person writes” WTF ” ? Unless that has a different meaning than I know of. I don’t care what you are Mavis I think you are awesome, I would want you as my best freind
Lucy says
Your positive response to this mean person’s comment shows what a wonderful person you are. Please continue sharing with us your avid followers.

I’ve long been a lurker on your website, but never commented before. The letter writer obviously likes to cherry pick everything – a Christian/Buddhist who’s liberal (definition @ Dictionary.com: free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant). His actions display none of the attributes of any of the doctrines he supposedly adheres to. I’m sure he means politically liberal, if so, he’s the reason liberal has become a bad word. Just like WTF. His rant is so wrong and misplaced.
I join the hundreds of your readers in support of you and your blog. Your work is appreciated
Marcia says
Wow, that was very interesting.
First off, what’s wrong with Mormons? I know some, they are very nice. While I am not interested in joining their religion (I was raised Catholic, but am atheist), I can really respect them. Every one that I have ever met is incredibly friendly and sweet, and they walk the walk. They volunteer their time, donate their money. From an overpopulation standpoint, I get the point of not wanting them to go crazy with kids, but on the other hand, they seem to be very nice, hardworking people (we need more of those!)
On the food thing, you know, I’m not a fan of processed food, big Ag, etc. But my life is not black and white. It’s so much more popular these days to be extreme – extreme politician, extreme in everything. Nobody wants to hear about the grey – how to balance kids and two parents working, how to balance a job where you need flexibility, how to balance healthy local food with a budget, how to balance food you make from scratch with the amount of time you have to make it.
My kids eat froot loops on vacation. I make Trader Joe’s frozen chicken breaded tenders once a week. We buy frozen pizza at Costco and have it twice a month. But I’ve also been a member of a local CSA for 14 years, have managed to keep a tomato plant alive for an entire growing season, and recently bought 20-30 lbs of local, free range heritage pig from a farmer.
Ah, the extremes, they drive me crazy!!
Heidi says
Mavis, I am always impressed in how neutral you keep your blog, and you don’t touch on hot button topics. I truly enjoy reading your blog and as a stay at home Mom who has a much smaller income than 100K per year (yuck, what a creep), I find you inspiring. You help keep me motivated on days when I feel discouraged and on days when I feel like I just can’t make ends meet and provide quality food for my family. Just like me, you work very hard for your family, and that is what it is all about.
Ann GG says
Well said Mavis! I look forward to reading your posts every night. We have enjoyed several of your recipes and I love your funny stories and adventures.
Lexie says
Mavis,
Thanks for standing up for “Mormon”s. I’m glad you’ve met some you like. I’m Mormon (or more appropriately LDS) and I think it’s really uncool that guy is using the name ” Mormon” as an insult. It’s not cool to use another person’s religious affiliation as an insult.
I think folks must ask if you’re Mormon because the religion encourages some of the thing your blog discusses such as, self-sufficiency, food storage and thriftiness. I think these are all good things
I enjoy your blog and I it makes my day to read your posts. You seem to be a genuinely happy person and I really love that.
Thank you for not being judgmental and open minded.
Melissa says
Mavis, not very Christian or Buddhist of him~ Love your answer. Thanks for sharing your life through your blog. PS – I AM Mormon and got a chuckle over that addition to the list~
Julia says
I love your post, and look forward to each and every one.
Dawn says
Wow! That guy sure has lots of free time for a stay-at-home Dad! I am commenting in the midst of potty-training a small child! She is ready to be cleaned so I have to run! Keep up the good work! Haters gonna hate but we love ya!

I totally enjoy your blog and look forward to reading it. It is a lifestyle blog for those of us looking to do the best we can with what we have. He is a pimple on a monkey’s butt in the bigger picture and not even worth another thought! You handled your reply with grace, which is far better than I would have done! Bravo!
Charles says
Bravo!, Enough said!
Lora says
Does Michael not realize his harsh judgement, “literally exemplifies a vacuum of integrity”?
Vy says
((hugs)) Mavis, you have inspired me in many ways: Growing food to eat, consistency (posting every day! wow!), frugality, crock pot cooking, freezer meals (I just put up 22 cups of pumpkin in the freezer), making my own dishwasher tabs, on and on and on. Haters will always find reasons to hate, sorry it landed on you.
Pj says
We all have free will. No one forces anyone else to read your blog. Those who don’t like it can go find a different blog that better suits their needs. I’ll be here reading your blog, because I like it, just as it is.
Rebecca says
Oh, Mavis, this cracks me up! Who is this dude to judge anyone? If you don’t like the blog, ssshh…wait for it….don’t. read. it. What a dork! I love your blog, you make me giggle and I have learned something from your posts more times than I should admit!! Keep up your feisty, Girl. Haters gonna hate, but he won’t drag you down with him!!!
Darlene says
LMAO!!!! Go Mavis!!! Get ’em!!!!
Patti says
So vey well said. I pray that gentleman and his wife raise their little boys to be more open minded and less judgemental. Love thy neighbor.
Sallie Borrink says
Late to the commenting party, but wanted to add my two cents. Yours is one of the least judgmental blogs I’ve read. No one is 100% consistent, including the person on his high-horse who sent you the letter. We all make choices and trade-offs every day. That’s the challenge of living in the times we do. Too many choices and too much information. We all do the best we can.
Eve says
All I have to say is that person is probably very unhappy and chose to take it out on you. Shame on him. I love your blog. I take care of my brother who lives with us and who has dementia, my husband works full time, and my 16 year old grandson lives with us, When I open up your blog it gives me a break and makes me feel like I am visiting with a close friend. Keep it up. Hugs
Lisa says
Personally, I’ve always thought that “wtf” was short for Christian Buddhist. I mean, I just see that written and immediately think Chritian Buddhist and wholesomeness and integrity. What were you thinking Mavis, talking back to someone of such high esteem? Obviously, high self esteem but high esteem nonetheless.
Liliana says
Where is the “Like” button? Mavis you are great and I especially admire the fact that even though you try your hardest to feed your family healthy meals you don’t consider the end of the world when you sometimes can’t or when somebody chooses to do something different then you.
Debi says
Mavis, you said it perfectly. And to the person that wrote that letter, do you think everyone always agrees with you? If you do, you are definitely immature. Everyone of us has different likes and dislikes and no one will agree with you 100% of the time. I feel sorry for you, you must live on a secluded island where others cannot tell you that you are wrong, misinformed or they don’t like your attitude, etc.
bethb says
Right on Debi OR he is such a tyranical jerk that no one has nerve enough to tell him anything. Glad he does not live with or near me. LOL
Jen Maldonado says
WOW. This guy truly has some issues. You know what, there is not many women in the world that work hard to grow a garden, save money every week on food and do everything in the world for their kids. I started following you because I am the same “species”. I don’t own makeup, jewelry or nice things by MY choice. I shop thrift stores and auctions and garage sales, not because I have to, because I just want to! Some people just do not get it. My husband and family love me just the way I am, dirty fingernails after a day in the garden, hair pulled back and wearing my ugly black framed glasses every day. Keep on keeping on Mavis! Those who know you as who you are will continue to love you back! 🙂

I am a firm believer in everything happening for a reason. There is always a reaction for every action, be it obvious, subtle, universal, spiritual, etc. I have experienced both negativity and positivity repercussed. His actions will be reciprocated by someone just like him. It takes all kinds to make the world go round. I hope you take it with a grain of salt (or a spoonful of honey, if you prefer) and turn it into something delicious and then blog about it. I enjoy reading your adventures. Good day to y'all. Life's a garden, and there's always pests in the garden no matter what you do to try to deter or repel them! (Damn squirrels!!)
Rebekah says
Mavis, I truly enjoy your blog and this post makes me love you even more. For every piece of hate mail, I present to you some love mail 🙂
I unfortunately am someone who has been judged harshly by strangers and loved ones alike. You got it right – who cares what other people do or say?! This unfortunately sad male who wrote you must not have enough to do with his days as he has time to criticize a blogger, minding her own business. If you don’t like it, don’t read it Mr. Smarty Pants! If only everyone took the position you have, the world would be a better place. You, my dear, are an example of a Good Human Being. Keep it up girlie! God bless you!
Francie says
From time to time I have rec’d umpleasant e-mails regarding either my work or volunteering…the positive is that it really gets me “rollin” and I get this incredible burst of energy…look out world because on those days I see no roadblocks to anything I may want to do!!! At the end of those days, I laugh, give thanks for those who embrace me and settle down in a clean house and a big ol’ homemade something to chew on!!!! Life is good and I so enjoy your blog….sometimes I need to go back days/weeks to play catch-up…Keep up the good work!!!!

Dang Mavis! I think you got a record number of replies on this one … just keep on doing what you are doing … sometimes I have to shop at Walmart … I live in the country and Walmart is one of the closest stores … I would LOVE to buy from the local farmers but they often charge unconscionable prices … however, I am working on finding good deals in that area … found $5 a bushel deer apples (seconds) this season; so, I made apple sauce and I am working on gardening.
Mavis Butterfield says
$5 a bushes for applesauce apples is a great deal!

Mavis, I’ve been reading your blog for about a year now and while I don’t agree with everything you post. I have learned a lot from you and appreciate your efforts to put knowledge out there. Thank You!!!!

I didn’t see this post the first time it came through. Just FYI Mavis, reading your blog makes me happy. When I sit down in the evening to look at my news feed on Flipboard, I am always happy to see when you have posted that day. It is like getting a letter from a friend. I know that you can shake off stupid, negative statements so I am not worried about you taking this too hard, but I just wanted you to understand that you mean a lot to many readers all over the world, me included. Have a beautiful New Year’s and I can’t wait to see what you do with all your gardening adventures in 2015!
Mavis Butterfield says
Aww thank you for the very sweet comment. 🙂 Happy New Year to you too.
