Anemone bulbs come in a huge variety of colors–and can be planted as a fall or spring blooming bulb. You can plant them right into your flower beds or use them in pots/containers. They are a pretty versatile way to add a lot of color impact to your garden.
For a spring/summer bloom, plant anemone bulbs in the fall, about 6 weeks before the first frost. For fall bloomers, plant after the danger of frost has passed in the spring. Pick a spot where they will receive at least a 1/2 day of full sun. Anemones, spring or fall blooming, will perform better if you soak them before planting–because they like to form their root system long before flowering.
So, just plop your bulbs in a small bowl of room temperature water for 2-4 hours before planting. To plant, dig down 1-2″. Drop in the bulbs, it doesn’t matter which end is up–anemones will find their way to the surface either way {clever little things}. Cover the bulbs with soil, and lightly soak the soil with water.
Each season, after blooming, your anemones will slowly die back, leaving yellow wilted foliage. RESIST the urge to trim them back until all of the foliage has died back and yellowed–that process is what will feed your bulbs in the next growing season. {You CAN snip the flowers as they bloom, though, if you want to bring them in and throw them in a vase.}
If you want to plant them in containers, follow the exact same guidelines as above, making sure the pots have adequate drainage and quality potting soil.
Happy planting,
