I don’t think I’ve ever had a vacation quite like this years Thanksgiving break.
The original plan was for The Girl to fly home for Thanksgiving. But when it came time went to book the ticket, all the freebie tickets for her to fly home during the specific time frame we needed were taken, and to buy a ticket was out of the question. {Almost $1,000!}. I however could get a free ticket with my airline points for $5.20 each way, but would have to be gone for 8 days.
So the HH just told me to go. After all Monkey Boy only had Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday off, and they wouldn’t mind holding down the fort for a week and taking care of Lucy the Puggle dog 24/7.
{That was code for: PLEASE leave, so we can sit in our pajamas for a week drinking Coke and eating Doritos and take out pizza while playing video games and watching football without you bugging us every hour to go outside and get something done}.
So I did.
And it was AWESOME. I picked up The Girl from school and we babysat her roommates fish, watched a ton of movies, ate our Thanksgiving meal at 10 am in our pj’s and then lounged around all day working on a puzzle and listening to music.
We made jam for her professors.
And delivered treats to a neighbor.
We spent small business Saturday checking out small, local thrift stores and scored some sweet deals. My daughter found a bunch of clothes and I found old pie tins for $0.25 each, a stoneware mug for $0.59, a bowl $0.99, and hand-carved wooden spoon $2.00. I also found a used copy of Teacher Man by Frank McCourt {I’ve already read his previous books}.
We also bought a rug for the back door.
And took a road trip to a friends house to enjoy a Japaneses feast of octopus, pickled ginger and good company.
It’s been the most relaxing trip I’ve ever taken. No agenda, no projects, no rushing around.
Now all that’s left to do before I head home is pull up the root veggies and put the garden to rest for winter.
Sometimes slowing down, is the best medicine ever.

P.S. How was your Thanksgiving?

As your kids get older and start leaving the nest, holidays will be different. For me, now that all my kids are adults, our holidays are very quiet some times and full of people other times. I have learned to enjoy my holidays differently, usually we go on a trip.

That sort of vacation is exactly why we have a vacation house too. When we go there we do nothing and sleep, sleep, sleep. We have no internet access and hardly any TV reception so we really unplug. We have been going there for 15 years so we have seen and done everything so there is no need to do anything but unwind and recharge.

Mavis I love your red sorrels! Fun addition to your black wardrobe.

They’re a little flashy if I do say so myself. 🙂
