Neighbor Boy $52 {I’m only counting half {$26} in my grocery total*}
Remember a few weeks ago when I wrote about crappy school fundraisers and asked why don’t more schools sell something like fruit and vegetables? Well guess what? Not a 24 hours after I posted the story did I get a knock on my the door from one of the neighbor kids selling fruit for a fundraiser for his baseball team. I ALMOST PEEPED MY PANTS. Does the kid read my blog? Does him mom? What a coincidence. Right?
And now I have 40 pounds of citrus sitting on my kitchen counter. Good times people. Good times.
Luckily one of my favorite canning books, The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook has several orange and grapefruit marmalade recipes in it. So fair warning … if you are on my Christmas list, you can expect a jar of marmalade this year! 😉
* Since we are eating half, and giving half of the fruit {in the form of jam} as gifts, I’m only counting half the cost in my grocery tally. That’s fair, right?

The UPS guy had a busy week delivering my Cyber Monday deals. Seeds, Boots, Pectin, Batteries and Sharpies. Did you order those boots LAMO Boots from REI Outlet for $20 when they were on sale? Holy cats they are cozy! I’ve worn them every day since they arrived. 🙂

We are a small rural school and our girls High School basketball team has been selling oranges and grapefruit as a fundraiser for years. Works really well.

I’d rather buy fruit and veggies as a fundraiser than wrapping paper. 🙂 Go Team!

When i was in high school (300 years ago), we had a fundraiser to send our FFA group to regionals and state. Guess what? It was fruit! Citrus to be exact, oranges, tangerines, tangelos and grapefruit. Was fun.
I’ve got a killer buttermilk orange cookie recipe that’s to die for…uses zest and the juice of 3 oranges for a single recipe. Icing has zest and juice in it too. Happy canning Mavis!

That is such a great option with the citrus. We are still in the gift wrap, crummy candles, cookie dough, etc. phase. I sometimes just write a check, but produce would be such an improvement.

Mavis, I’m curious about something- have you tracked the “free” stuff you get, like the Zaycon credits, and the dairy, and calculated a total? I see that $157/month average, and I’m blown away. I just don’t know how I could get close to that without the free meat. So I’m just curious if you know a monthly average value of the freebies.

I have been buying citrus from our local Lions Club for years. This year 40 lbs was $38 so you made me feel like I got a good deal. I’m planning to eat it all myself (if possible).
We buy our Christmas Tree from the boy scouts. Nice to buy stuff we need and help the nonprofits at the same time.
