While The Girl was home for Christmas, we decided to watch The Giver. It’s based on the book, by the same name, which I totally recommend reading before watching the movie. It is kind of the original Dystopian society {in the same vein as Hunger Games, etc.}. The book was originally published in ’94, so it’s been a pretty long wait on the movie. It’s about a boy who starts to question the rules of a supposed Utopian existence. Corruption, greed…it’s got it all.
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it. Did you love it? Hate it? Can’t wait to watch it over and over?
Peace out Girl Scouts & have yourself a great weekend, ~Mavis

My daughter read the book in middle school and loved it so much she read the three books that come after. She couldn’t wait to see the movie, and sadly left the theater almost in tears. The movie is SO different from the book that book lovers will be irritated at the important plot changes. However, it is a good movie on its own, as long as you haven’t read the book first.

We read all three books as well and loved them too.

The book is amazing, and the movie is good. The movie attempted to keep the spirit of the book, but like most movies do, can’t quite communicate the deeper thoughts and feelings of the characters.

I loved this movie! My husband & I went to see it in the theatre.

I haven’t seen that but will for sure put on my list. Mom and I saw Ms. Streep yesterday in INTO THE WOODS and it was fantastic! I’m a bit biased as I did the play in college some cough cough years ago. Meryl’s voice has improved drastically since her attempt at ABBA. Johnny Depp had some good pipes as well!

I read the book when it was fairly new (born in 82). I LOVED it. I got it as a Kindle dl for some ridiculously cheap deal a couple of years ago and reread it — as good as I remembered! I was very excited about this movie, and randomly ended up watching it on an airplane on my flight to visit family over Thanksgiving. Even with the setting, I was happy. In my mind, it did as good of a job as any movie format can to translating a complex book.
OTOH— THERE ARE MORE BOOKS??? I had NO idea that this was “series”!! Must go to amazon Right Now.

I didn’t know there were more, either, and have already gone to Amazon for the next book for my Kindle!
