1. Get Organized. Bottom line, I need to get it together.
Remember that space in the garage I was suppose to organize last week? It didn’t happen.
2. Run, walk or crawl a Marathon, half marathon, 10k, and 5k race this year.
Other than walking Lucy, I didn’t get a whole lot of extra walking in this week. The HH came back from his trip sick and I haven’t been feeling super hot lately so I don’t want to push it. Because basically, if I get sick, the whole house shuts down. Ha!
3. Remodel our Master Bathroom, Master Closet and Monkey Boy’s Bathroom.
So apparently NO ONE likes tile counter-tops. Hmmm. How is it possible I am the only one not bothered by grout lines? We have always had tile counter-tops and I have never had a problem with staining or keeping them clean. But, I am going to talk to Chino and see what other surface is in my price range.
4. Finish Every Room in Our House.
Completed so far:
- Monkey Boy’s Bedroom
- The Girls Bedroom
5. Turn Spare Bedroom into a Cozy Home Office Space for myself.
When we first bought our house, I imagined putting a couch, a small coffee table, a tv and a desk in the spare bedroom and using it as my own personal cozy office. Like the kind you see in magazines. So far that has not happened. Right now the room is just a boring space filled with extra furniture, grow lights and craft supplies.
6. Create a Vegetable Garden.
It’s official. I’ve decided to install 4 raised garden beds just outside the patio door. Now I just have to map out what I’m going to plant and I’ll be ready to go!
7. Build a Path into the Hillside for Easy Access to the Upper Garden.
8. Limit my personal spending to $100 a month.
I stopped by the Goodwill on my way home from running errands and picked up this dinning room chair for $3.99 + tax. The fabric seat was a little stained and it really wasn’t my style but I’ve been looking for a good, sturdy chair for my daughter’s desk so I went ahead and purchased it. I bought some fabric from Joann’s and plan on turning it from trash to treasure later today. 🙂
Total spent so far this month $81.64. Still have $18.36
9. Purge… Weekly. Find 10 things each week to donate to the thrift store.
This week I donated:
1 Old printer
1 Opened package of glossy printer paper {I bought the wrong stuff}
1 Humidor {Someone gave it to my husband 5 years ago and he has never used it, shhhh!}
1 Leopard hair clip and matching headband I found under a cabinet {must have been the previous owner’s}
3 Matchstick holders
1 Colonial Williamsburg Calendar
1 Melamine plate
10. Read 1 book a week. – My goal is to read 52 books this year
I whizzed though Henry Buskin’s book on Johnny Carson and absolutely recommend it to anyone who is a Johnny Carson fan. Talk about an interesting character. I thought the bits about his finances in the early years of the Tonight Show were fascinating and how seemingly uninteresting money was to him. He worked in exchange for suits! {I can think of a few things I would work for, Panera being one of them}. 🙂 Anywho, I loved the book and read it in like 2 days. It’s a keeper.
11. Slow Down. – Do one thing for myself each week.
I finally finished the primitive turkey rug I’ve been working on since last summer, and I love how it turned out! I did make one mistake though. Can you see it? I was going to fix it, but decided not too. 😉
12. Canning – I’d like to open my pantry at the end of the year and have rows and rows of home canned goodness staring back at me.
So far this year I have made: Cranberry Orange Marmalade and Blueberry Lemon Jam
Did you set any goals for this year? If so, how are they coming along?

How to you plan out your garden? Using pen/pencil and paper (regular or graph) or do you use an app or program. The HH suggested I use graph paper (I’m spatially challenged sometimes so he thinks that will help me be realistic with what I plant) but I’ve seen some cool free programs out there. I’m digging up a small front garden along with some lawn in front of it for my veggie garden. It’s a good size space but I don’t want it too crowded or too bare.
Thanks Mavis….LOVE your blog.

I am unbelievably old-school Gwenn. I do use a pencil and graph paper! 🙂

Can you recommend an app for planning a garden? We are in the stages of planning ours and its bigger then i’ve ever dealt with. Pen and Paper just aren’t working!

Yes! I wrote this post last year –> http://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/8-garden-apps-for-iphone-ipad-and-android/

Ok, now I gotta know where you got the desk in the spare bedroom from!?!?! I love the storage possibilities.
So maybe, just maybe it’s time to cut yourself some slack. You said you wanted a slower more relaxed approach to life. You’ll get everything done, there’s no doubt in my mind. But, sometimes, not always on the time table we wish. The good news is, the project will always be there when you’re ready! And, if you get sick, not only will your regular stuff get behind, but all your projects will be pushed back too. So, chill, and make yourself some tea, it’ll happen all in good time.

Thanks Tracy. 🙂 The tall work station {with the silver bar-stool} came from Costco last January. It’s basically a pottery barn knock off.

That must be why I like it!!! Most of my house is Pottery Barn, or PB look. And now that you say that, I think I was eyeing it there! You snooze, you lose I guess.

Your rug looks gorgeous. I’m tackling knitting right now, but I’d love to learn to make rugs at some point. Whatever the mistake is, I think it’s great that you left it. I was told once by an experienced knitter that a mistake here or there is part of the beauty of a handmade item, and that some master crafters actually had a signature “mistake” that they included in each of their projects. I made a knitted cable pocketbook for my daughter and discovered a mistake. Part of the fun of giving it to her was that it was a learning project, and I challeneged her to find the mistake.

Hey Mavis,
I don’t see any mistake! I love your rugs-they’re so beautiful. And wouldn’t a mistake be the ‘perfect touch’ for a primitive rug anyway?? I love your handiwork!!!!
