Good morning everyone. It’s raining like crazy this morning… I hope it doesn’t last. What are your plans for today? Anything exciting? I finally finished the Easter rug I was working on so I’m looking for another project to dive into while I wait to hear back from the HOA. I think I might try dying some wool with the black walnuts I collected last fall at my friend JJ’s house. I’ve never done it before but apparently black walnuts make a great dirty brown/black dye. We’ll see. Have you ever dyed fabric before using something other than traditional dye? I’d love to hear about it if you have.

We have not dyed fabric yet, but it is on our to do list! Every year we attend a workshop at our local nature center where we dye Easter Eggs naturally. Our children look forward to it every year. Our children are saving red onion peels and other things already.

I have dyed silk with black walnuts I collected in Nebraska. I create Batiks and the black walnut dye was beautiful. Not only was the color warm and gorgeous, but the silk seemed to shimmer more with this dye than the usual chemical dyes I typically use. Have fun and let us know how your yarn comes out! I want to explore using other plant based dyes in the future but I don’t have the space right now.

I took an online course on dying fabric using teas, onion skins, flowers and spices. It is amazing the colors you can get from cheap tea bags. The colors are wonderful, if you like the natural colors. I am using my fabrics in a small quilted wallhanging. You should be able to look online for recipes for using the walnut shells. The mordant you use can also change the resulting color. Have fun!
