Well hello there. Did you have a nice weekend? The puggle princess and I had a great time putting together our second garden bed yesterday and playing fetch in the back yard. Lucy still hasn’t grasped the idea of how fetch is played {she wants to keep the ball} but we are working on it. Any suggestions? 😉

Fetch may be a lost cause with Lucy. I have a Shiba Inu who plays with the ball like he’s a cat – tosses it up in the air, catches it, pushes it with his nose and chases it. He’ll chase a ball when I throw it but then the game becomes NOT giving it back to me. It’s been that way since I got him at 6 weeks old (he’s now 4 years old). I also have a German Shepard pup (8 months old) who will play fetch until he drops. He grasped the concept in a split second and has been a fetch champ since then. I’m just convinced that some dogs just aren’t fetch kind of dogs.

I have a cat that plays fetch better than my Dog ever did! She was a gorgeous Cavalier King Charles Spaniel but balls were not for her.

Re Lucy and fetch.
I had this problem with my dog. When she was 8 I was tired of fighting so I brought some training treats (ask your vet) and set to work. I started by letting her run around the yard, then called her to me, taught her to sit and gave her the treat and praised her. She knew I had the treats so I would throw the ball/toy and she would race and get it. I would call her to me and I madesit then her ‘give’ it to me, (using the word give as the command) then gave her the treat and petted and made a good girl fuss of her. Didn’t take long to cotton on. I would do it about 5 times at any one time, then try again later. Once she grasped the concept, I would not give the treat every time, but still made a petting fuss. Now she does this without any treats at all.
With love and care, dogs are never too old to learn. Training treats are an excellent way for behavioural praise.
