Word of the Day: Preponderance Definition: The greater part of, most of Used in a sentence: There was a preponderance of males in the audience.
Do you believe dogs have selective hearing? I do. Lucy has a few key words: Bunny, Robin, Chipmuch, Window, Doggy Daycare and Chewy Stick. If you say those words to her she FREAKS OUT. Pretty much everything else is gibberish to her.
What do you think? Does your dog have selective hearing as well?
Have a great Tuesday everyone,
♥ Mavis

Great morning,
I love the posts about Lucy. I don’t think she has selective hearing because she would ignore words she knows when she wants to like my kids do. I think Lucy is smart and you could teach her many , many more words. If you teach her many words you can tell by her response and even have a semi-conversation. Be careful though, you could create a nag monster! Walk me, Walk me, woof, woof, woof!

Bath, daddy and carrot. The word bath sends the dog into hiding, the word daddy makes him whine/tap dance and saying the word carrot sends him running to the kitchen with urgency.

My 3 cats have a much larger vocabulary than my parents’ dog. Then again, I made a point to develop this in them, just for fun. Animals are my favorite kind of people. 😉

Our dog Neville goes crazy when he hears “car ride”. He also perks up with “can”, as in can of cat food. he thinks he might get some.
Oh, and he really dislikes when my husband uses the f-word. It makes him cringe and hide.
I love hearing about Lucy. She’s so adorable!

I can dig around in the refrigerator, and the dogs don’t budge, but as soon as the “cheese” drawer opens, they come running…they know the sound of the drawer, and they know the word “cheese”. Also, “Daddy’s home!”, will send them running to the door. “Walk” and “Car ride” are also top words. I don’t have to say the word “vet”, but somehow they instinctively know we are going there, as they cower in the furthest corner of the back seat when we turn down THAT road!

Leash, Car ride, Treat Party and Bark Park usually start the 4-legged dance at my house.
I also share my life with an amazon parrot so I’ve got lots of observation time with animal communication. There was an African Grey parrot on PBS who was involved in language studies. Could count, distinguish shapes by verbal command and ask for items in English by name. Then the bird would combine words to do his version of verbal jazz. It was proven to not be mimicking and fascinating to see take place via the tv.
Seems to me that I’ve read an article about a dog that had a proven 400 to 500 word vocabulary. Wish I could remember where I read it, I’d post a link because I thought it so interesting.
Our animal friends are much more aware than most of us give credit.

Someone told me that dogs have the vocabulary of a three year old. Pepper (our Golden Retriever) definitely has words that get her attention. It is obvious that she understands the key words more than the rest of the sentence.
