Christmas is the “big show” as far as holidays are concerned {in my book, at least}, and with it comes great memories…and a slew of chores. Keeping the holiday on track without pulling out your hair is a delicate balance. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose.
Over the years, though, I have tried to record my best tips and tricks for pulling Christmas, complete with GOOD memories, without completely breaking down mentally. Since my mother taught me to be a “good sharer,” I’m here to pass some of those tricks onto you.
First, decking the halls and all that jazz: Over the years, I have really pared down the amount of commercial holiday decor I keep. One, I don’t particularly want to store it, and two, lucky for me, I prefer the handmade Christmas look. I usually collect my own pine cones, and turned them into scented centerpieces. Years ago, I started making my own wreath with items I had scavenged from around the yard {and maybe $5 in supplies}. Even if aren’t lucky enough to have an evergreen willing to donate to your wreath-making cause, you can always do a more sentimental hand-print wreath with the kiddos little paws.
If spending a little quality time with the kiddos in on the top of your to-do list, why not put their little hands to good use? They can make DIY Christmas crafts and gifts, and you can make memories.
If a handmade holiday isn’t your thing, try a new take on gift-giving: the gift of experiences. It won’t need to be returned for a different size, and your recipient will have a long-lasting memory.
Working your way up to the big day can be overwhelming. Breaking Christmas into a checklist means you know what you should be doing when. It also means when the chore is done, you can relax with some homemade hot chocolate and let the rest go.
If you agreed to host the Christmas meal, don’t let the experience to share your home with family and friends be over-shadowed by the high-cost of hosting. Here’s a few money saving tips for hosting Christmas dinner on a tight budget.
Finally, what Christmas would be complete without those plates of Christmas cookies?
May your days be merry and bright!
