Had bread not been on sale last week at Fred Meyer, I probably wouldn’t have even gone to the grocery store. As I’ve mentioned before, this time of year is hard for me. The stores are ALWAYS packed and unless I can get to the grocery store before 7 am, I don’t dare walk in.
A few of you mentioned I should pop by Costco a half an hour before closing, but even then, it’s still pretty chaotic this time of year. Plus, there is too much stuff there to be tempted with. So I’ve pretty much decided to just avoid the grocery stores until after the holidays unless I ABSOLUTELY need something… like milk. Maybe I’m weird, but whateva.
I think I’ll clean out/organize our fridge and freezer this week and see what I can make over the next 8 weeks…. that will keep me motivated to stay away from the stores. I know it will.
Fred Meyer $6.97
Seriously. At $0.99 a loaf for Dave’s Killer bread, I should have gone back for more. But it seemed kind of silly to make a special trip just to stock up on bread. But man, is it ever good.

Ugh, I think around $140, a bit over budget. ($125 budget). But my freezer is stocked, so yay?
Kari says
$75-ish. One big trip to Fred Meyer, and a stock-up run to the local food co-op during their bulk sale to get almond butter, popcorn kernels, and local raw honey. I should be good for a while. How do you avoid the store over the holidays? We are hosting thanksgiving this year, so I don’t think that will be an option for me.
Mavis Butterfield says
I already have a zaycon turkey and a ham in the freezer…. plus all the thing to make the side dishes. I may need to grab something when I run in for milk…. but I’m hoping I don’t have to. I’ll know better once I clean out the freezer.
Linda says
$120. I need to start getting ready for Thanksgiving.
Lunch Lady says
If anyone lives near WINCO they have acorn squash .68 each. I bought three. They make the best “pumpkin” pie. Not as wet as pumpkin and at .68 I have enough for 2 pies! They are BIG! Just roast in the oven like normal, scoop out the pulp and stick in the food processor. Twirl until smooth. Delicious. I did a test run yesterday and the pie is already gone! Didn’t tell anyone what it was until after they wiped it out.
Sue R. says
I got the WinCo acorn squash too 🙂 Maybe I’ll go back for more–acorn squash store well.
Vivian Blossom says
Mavis, just curious. When you put down what you eat for the week, is it for just you or does the whole family eat those things. It doesn’t seem like Monkey Boy and the HH would be satisfied with some of the things you have listed.
Candice says
i have often wondered as Vivian posted, are you the only one home to eat that way? I tend to eat that way whenever my husband leaves town for a couple days but would never consider that is would be acceptable to serve meals for dinner to satisfy my husband’s appetite. So, it is just you then?
Mavis Butterfield says
The Girl eats whatever. Monkey Boy buys his lunch every single day{his money, not mine}. I pack the HH’s lunch. Sometimes if the boys are going to be late, I will just pull soup out of the freezer. None of us are heavy eaters. And I think that’s maybe where we are different from a lot of people.
