I totally thought I would be avoiding the grocery store but I was able to sneak out of the house early one morning so I popped in and picked up a few things. Luckily the stores were not crowded and I was able to shop without people jamming their carts into me every 10 steps. It was lovely.
Albertsons $3.52
Eggs were on sale for $0.88 a dozen so I stocked up.
Fred Meyer $25.32
How can you not buy a 10 pound sack of potatoes for $0.88? Fred Meyer also had Greek Gods yogurt on sale for $2.50 a tub and chili was on sale $0.50 {totally should have bought Monkey Boy a case for Christmas}. Pringles $1.25 a can {for the boys} and cottage cheese and yogurt were $1.25 each. The chocolates were free thanks to the friday freebie program.
Zaycon Fresh
I used my Zaycon credit to pick up a case of salmon and the HH and The Girl were over the moon excited about it.

I made a huge pot of vegetable corn chowder. Our CSA “box” came with a 25-inch long bunch of celery. And so did last week. Oy. Froze some for later.
Also made a tray of chicken enchiladas and a tray of spinach frittata.

I made white chicken chili in the crockpot yesterday. I used 2 pounds of chicken breast and removed one large breast to use for a different meal (fajitas). We ate it as soup last night with diced avocado, cheese and sour cream. I plan on making some rice and cornbread and top with the “chili” later in the week. My partner dislikes leftovers so finding ways to turn one recipe into 2-3 is always great. I may even be able to make a chicken pie out of some of the chicken (it doesn’t hold the salsa flavors very well).

I need to make chicken chili again! Thanks for the reminder.

Hi Mavis, I have a question about Zaycon. Zaycon is not available in Connecticut. The closest drop site is Poughkeepsie NY – an hour drive away. The last two times I bought chicken from the supermarket I had to throw it away. The no-brand chicken breasts looked freezer burned on the under side. The Perdue thighs smelled off.
Is it really worth it to drive two hours round trip to get 40 pounds of chicken off the back of a truck???
By the way the salmon looks awesome. Thanks for your feedback.

That is a tough question. If you were planning on heading in that area anyway, I would totally weave that into the trip. Thanks for letting me know how far east they go, I hadn’t looked that up yet.

Hi Mavis,
I live ‘out in the country’ so driving an hour to Mobile AL (2 hour round-trip) to pick up Zaycon wasn’t all that unusual for me. And it was nice to have the deep freeze stocked!

Love you blog Mavis. I am always jealous the awesome grocery deals you get! I wish we had more of those here in NE Connecticut.
We do have stellar farmers markets though.
Peace out girl scout!
