Sunday morning we left Lancaster, Pennsylvania and headed to my friend Heather’s house in Massachusetts. The original plan was for The Girl to run 20 miles with her friend but an unexpected knee injury {her friend} squashed those plans. The Girl is training for a marathon and so we needed to stick to her running program and find a place for her to run by herself.
But where in the heck do you find a place to run 20 miles at the last minute when you don’t know the area well? We quickly pulled up google maps from PA to MA and 3 loops around Central Park in NYC seemed like the best option.
So while The Girl ran, I checked out the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
IT.WAS.AWESOME. I mostly hung out in the American Collection section looking at pieces of furniture and folk art.
The samplers and shaker pieces were my favorite. I only wished the museum had more out on display.
Isn’t this Tiffany lamp gorgeous? Can you imagine the skills needed to make one of those? Anyone know the value on a real Tiffany lamp these days?
After we were done in NYC, we headed north through Connecticut with only one destination in mind…
Sift Bake Shop in the lovely seaside town of Mystic, Connecticut. Kathie S. recently left a comment on the blog and said we needed to try out the Sift Bake Shop…. IT.WAS.AMAZING.
I’ll do a proper post on the bakery later but let me just tell you not only did they have amazing pastries and bread, but they also had some seriously delicious corned beef sliders with sauerkraut.
And yes, it’s only been a few days and my pants are totally tight already. 😉
We rolled into Heather’s around 7pm and spent the next 3 hours sitting around her kitchen table talking the night away.
A museum, good food and hanging out with friends. What more could you ask for?
Vacations are RAD.
Peace Out Girl Scouts… I’ll check in tomorrow.

Okay, so here are two recommendations for you that will totally feed your love of American furniture, craft, and design if you are in either of these areas. Lots of period furniture and crafts at both.
MESDA (in Old Salem in Winston Salem)

Genessee Country Village (near Rochester, NY)

If you liked the American Collection at the MET, try the American Folk Art Museum next time you are in NYC.

Next time youre in Connecticut, stop in Fairfield at Alina’s and/or Isabelle et Vincent. Or you could stop at Bridgewater chocolates in New Fairfield and never fit in your pants again
Mavis says
Well vacations are for not fitting your pants (temporarily at least, right?!)!
Ilene says
Exactly! Are you stopping in at Stonewall Kitchen in York on your way to Kennebunkport?
Stop the Cape Porpoise Kitchen if it is open in the Cape Porpoise section of Kennebunkport and take your girl for a picnic (brrrrr) at Goose Rock’s Beach…
Carolina says
I second that suggestion for stopping at Stonewall Kitchen in York, ME. It is right on US Route 1, just a few miles over the border from New Hampshire.

Kudos to the girl! Thanks for sharing your adventures!

HOLY CATS! Those are some expensive tolls! I’m shocked to see a $30+ rate. That makes for an expensive day out.
Rita says
How are you doing with the driving there? Is it stressful compared to home? Trying to figure out how the toll ticket works but not quite sure. Hope the weather is cooperating with you. Seems like you are having a lot of fun!
Val says
Hi Rita,
In response to the toll question … basically Mavis got on at Mile Marker/Post 286 … then depending on if you go east/west on the I76 (PA’s turnpike) … if you look at the line below … it would be it would be 1.95 if you got off at the next exit which is Morgantown … that $33.50 one … would be if you got on at 286 and drove all the way west to the Ohio state line … the turnpike has a higher speed limit (70) and is usually pretty smooth driving … hope that answers your question 🙂 took me a few trips to get it mastered (I am directionally challenged lol)
Linda says
I lived in PA at one time in the 70’s and the tolls were much cheaper then. Watch out for police waiting around the curves. The fact that they are charging you an arm and a leg doesn’t mean they won’t ticket you if you speed.
