Some people like to sleep in and hang out at the beach all day when they’re on vacation, but not me. I’d much rather get up at the crack of dawn and check out the local scene. Do what the locals do, eat what the locals eat, and for the most part, try and stay away from the tourist hot spots. Which, is really kind of hard to do in Honolulu, Hawaii. 😉
While I was visiting my parents in Hawaii last month, checking out a few bakeries for my Save the Bakeries Challenge was high on my priority list.
As my mom and I were out walking around one day we came upon Brug Bakery in Honolulu and decided to pop in a take a look around. When I think of a bakery or even a pastry shop, I think of sweet, not savory foods, don’t you?
Well, have you ever walked into a bakery and seen weenies in a bun for sale before? Seriously, because I haven’t. My dad LOVES hot dogs {and canned potatoes, and Vienna sausage in a can and other weird stuff like that} so we decided to buy him one.
He LOVED it.
A savory bun with teriyaki chicken and seaweed. Interesting!
I never thought corn baked with mayonnaise on a bun would be appealing… But of my goodness it was delicious!
Strangely enough, there were more savory choices than sweet.
Look at these adorable turtle buns!!! If I had a 5 year old in tow I would have bought one.
And the Kitty cat ham rolls.
What do you think they used to make the faces with? I’m guessing some sort of food safe pastry pen but I don’t know. Anyone know for sure?
Mom ended up buying a loaf of their raisin bread which we had toasted with a little slab of butter the next day. Even though this place is next to the Ala Moana shopping center and it’s a pretty crowded area, I totally recommend stopping by for a little something to snack on until dinner time. The prices were reasonable, the staff was super nice and the bakery was clean.

I prefer savory to sweet so this place appeals to me. I would like the kitty cat ham rolls but the turtle bun looked moldy to me so I would have a hard time making myself eat it.

The items all look like things you would find in a Japanese bakery. Bakeries there usually have a good amount of savory items versus having all sweets (although they have those too, and they are delicious!).

This bakery seems to have an South East Asian influence. Bakeries and fresh markets in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore have similar savory items. The corn bun and hotdog bun are very popular there. Yum!
