Last week I was busy with preparing for the yard sale but I also bought quite a few groceries {more than I had planned to actually} so our refrigerator is nice and full. I am going for another “no spend week” because I am over my grocery budget for the month, but mostly because I want to stay in this week… the stores… do they seem more crowded in the summertime to you?
Anywho, one of the meals I made last week homemade tortillas. I served them with beans, rice, chicken and home canned salsa. My crew loved them.
I pretty much ate big salads for linner each day while I packed leftovers for the HH.
Winco $ 77.71
I picked up a few fun things for Monkey Boy {White Castle Burgers, Nutty Bars and Marshmallow Fluff} and bought a bunch of fruits and veggies for The Girl. Zoi yogurt was on sale again for $2.78 so I stocked up on that too.
Winco. It’s always an adventure. Has anyone tried the whole chicken in a can?
Costco $40.44
Mrs. HB and I popped by Costco last week and I picked a few of their sale items. All the sample stations were out and I think I tried every single one of them. 🙂 My favorite time of year for Costco samples is during the holidays though when they have all the cheese samples. I’ve been craving Yancy’s Horseradish Cheddar the past few weeks… anyone know where they sell it locally?
So the Fisher Scone mix wasn’t on sale but I have to buy at least one box a year. Mine don’t turn out quite the same as the Scones they sell at the Puyallup Fair, but man oh man are they good. I whipped up a batch on Thursday night for dinner and served them alongside a vegetable frittata.
Fred Meyer $3.58
Milk was on sale last week at Fred Meyer for $1.79 a gallon so I had Monkey Boy pick up 2 gallons on his way home from work.
Costco Pizza $10.83
So about an hour after the yard sale on Saturday the HH turns to me and asked what I was making for dinner. I just stared at him for a minute then announced I was going to order a pizza from Costco. I thought it was funny. Because HELLO, I had woken up at 4 am that morning, sold stuff at the yard sale all day {while he stayed home} and was totally exhausted. And I don’t think that even registered with him. Whatever. What do I expect, right? I’ve been making dinner for that last 25 years… why would spending all day at a yard sale change that? 😉 Husbands, they’re kind of predictable that way.
Fred Meyer $16.43
Then Sunday rolled around. And the HH offered to go the store and pick up the sale items for me. 😉 So see, it all works out in the end I guess.
- Blueberries 2 pounds $3.77 each
- Eggs $.89 per dozen
- Tomatoes $0.99 a pound
- Bread $0.89 per loaf
The Girl and her breakfast: Coffee with Oatmeal and fruit.
Second round of green beans.
I think we will be harvesting cabbage in another 2 weeks.
And last but not least… TOMATOES!
How about YOU? How is your garden doing these days and what are you harvesting? Are you finding any great deals at the grocery store lately? Do tell.

Peaches!!!! Yum.
Carolina says
i don’t have anything to send you in the “snail mail” this week. But if you love peaches, believe it or not, there is an AMAZING peach farm here in New Hampshire, of all places. It is just a very few miles beyond Calef’s Country Store where you visited back in the early Spring. It is Union Lake Peach Orchard. It is not a pick your own place, but the peaches are wonderful! Check them out on Facebook!

I’ve never had a fresh fair scone, but I did have one once on an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle. My MIL, who used to live in Puyallup, gave me a box of that scone mix once. They were good!

Got our first zucchini. Can’t wait for the tomatoes.
Mary says
Got hit with hail the other day. Minimal damage to the garden. LOTS of weeds though. I planted my second round of green beans, since the first round I planted, only 10 plants came up. My cucumbers are just in the crapper this year, I don’t think I’m going to get any. Tomatoes and peppers are doing well, and I have more Egyptian onions than I know what to do with.
Mavis Butterfield says
What? What state are in you in Mary? That’s crazy!

Colorado

I’m not sure about the whole canned chicken!
Tammie says
We used to take the whole canned chickens camping with us and make dumplings to go with it. They are great if you are storing some canned meats.
Carol says
Thanks for the info, Tammie!
Loralee Gerstenberger says
We bought whole canned chicken when I was a kid! We would de-bone them and make chicken and dumplings or Chicken enchilada casserole! Very economical! I am from Albuquerque, NM!
April Smith says
I will never understand how eggs can be produced for $0.89 a dozen. I sell mine for $7/dz with 14 chickens and have so much demand I can’t supply and that just covers my costs and not my time.

I like the bowl of oatmeal! It looks more like a bowl of fruit with a little oatmeal in it! :0) That’s how I drink coffee…a little coffee in my cup of milk! I wouldn’t worry about the grocery spending because your eating out spending is lower, it balances out! I’ve been picking a lot of zucchini so it’s going to be zucchini bread time soon!
Deborah from Texas says
Have you heard about the Instant Pot? I just got one and love it. I made pot roast. I do need to cook the roast a bit longer, it was a tad tough, but the carrots? I’ve never had sweeter carrots that didn’t have any sugar added.
What do you use a whole chicken for?
Earlene says
So I have bought the whole chicken in the can, served it over noodles in a pinch many years ago, it was okay.
I got a deal this past weekend at Kwik Trip gas station, had eggs for $.49, got 4 dozen large, butter was $1.99 lb
Lace Faerie says
I’ve never bought a whole chicken in a can, but used to buy canned chicken breast at Costco. I’m guessing the bones would be cooked pretty well, if the calcium and minerals have leached out into the meat, it would make the whole canned chicken more nutritious than fresh, boneless pieces. Is it gelatinous like canned ham?

Here is a link to the best scones I have ever had! I make these for friends and family and always get asked for the recipe. I add a cup of dried cranberries and a cup of white chocolate chips. They also freeze very well. I will often make a batch, and freeze half for later or to take to a friend or as a hostess gift. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/20163/grandma-johnsons-scones/?internalSource=hub%20recipe&referringContentType=search%20results&clickId=cardslot%201

This week we got cherries for $1.93 per pound. They are rarely ever under $2 a pound here! I canned up a bunch as cherry pie filling for later in the year and 2 pounds I pitted for the husband to eat fresh. He loves them and will ask me every few weeks beginning in April when they are in season! He knows we wait until they are in season so we can get them for a reasonable price.
Karyn in MS says
Would you mind sharing your cherry pie filling recipe for canning? I always make a cherry clafoutis when they come in season. I can a lot of jam, etc but haven’t done pie filling.

Here’s my recipe for cherry pie filling too. http://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/canning-101-recipe-cherry-pie-filling/

Cucumbers are starting to come in! We’re harvesting last of the butter crisp lettuce to freeze and keep for soups (it’s a Romanian dish). Tomatoes are green on the vine. Several zuchinnis have made their debut as well. Also, lots of dill, basil, cilantro, thyme, chives, and parsley!! Waiting on eggplant, hot and sweet peppers, peas, beans, and carrots. Sooo excited for our very first harvest in our first home!
Laura T. says
Cristina, wow! Congratulations on a great first harvest!

Mavis, you make THE most rockiin’ salads EVER, with little itty bitty pieces of everything goooood chopped up! How long does it take you to make one of these babies? NUMO! Pretty as a picture!

I planted green beans at the base of all our tomato plants, so we’ve been eating roasted green beans with dinner every couple of days. We’ve gotten our first tomatoes in the past couple weeks (Sungold, Destor, Black Vernissage, Riesentraube, True Black Brandywine, Rose de Berne, and Summer Cider) and a few cucumbers, jalapenos, tomatillos, and new potatoes. I’m in a mad dash to finish a huge freezer cooking before the rest of the harvest hits and needs my attention.
